Im fifteen and the fact that I'm one of the only commenter's of the year makes me sad. More people should listen to this song. Especially kids my age. Great song, great singer.
Bronson Coonan you are right, they should. Now, get busy and make it happen. Plan an event at your school or with your sports group, or make it a theme at your (junior?) prom. Contact those guys who advertise on YT, the ones selling bracelets to get funds to clean up the ocean. Write Jimmy Buffet, he is an old sailor and has written inspiring songs about the ocean. Yes. It is a great song and singer but it is about the crew of the Calypso who were working against all odds to save the world's oceans--WHICH ARE OUR SOURCE OF OXYGEN! 50 yrs later. We need you young ppl. Neither Jacques nor John are on this earth any more. It is all up to you young folks now . . .
Because of your comment i am sending this wonderful song to my 26 year old grandson Thank you for paying attention! Check out old ( pre disco) Bee Gees, a lot of social commentary in their lyrics. I have reconciled myself to their disco days and can listen without the cringe, appreciating the songs for the musicianship.
I have loved this man since I heard his wonderful voice, obviously god needed him more than Us 😍 I grew up listening to him as a kid and now I am 53...... still cranking to his special kind of Vibe 🤔 Real music 😎
Hi Kyle! I have faith you are still listening to this song. My 12 and 14 year old songs played this song for me last night . They have been listening to this and Love is everywhere on repeat. So other wonderful young people like you are listening.
I COULD LISTEN TO JOHN DENVER EVERY SINGLE DAY, AND NEVER TIRE OF HIS ANGELIC VOICE. WHEN HE PASSED, THE WORLD LOST A WONDERFUL SINGER, AND MORE IMPORTANTLY A TRUE, BEAUTIFUL SOUL. YOU ARE LOVED AND MISSED JOHN, REST IN HEAVENLY PEACE OUR FRIEND
I saw him on Johnny Carson one night & he played this with no more than his guitar as backup or music & it was flawless. We lost a great talent when he died.
i love this man he died two days after my son was born and i cried so much the nurses thought i was my hormones. i told them over and over that this man was so important to me and to the world. I miss him and listen to his music often. Rest in Peace dear John.
I have always loved this song! The video he did with Jacques Cousteau inspired me when I first took swimming lessons. In the video John wears an under water mask with prescription lenses. So when I took swimming lessons I bought me a pair of swimming goggles with prescription lenses. I loved them and my instructor was impressed by them he had never know something like tha excited .
I had to ask a Facebook friend from Uganda for the name of this song. He was practicing his first Viennese Waltz to it. Now, I find myself humming to it. It's quite relaxing...
i do not care if u hate him or not because everyone has an opinion mine is that john denver was one of a kind and so was his voice and heart. He is my hero and that will never change
Cousteau was certainly an amazing man. I remember when I was a young boy watching the documentaries "The Silent World", I was in awe of what I was watching. Like many people, I credit Jaques Cousteau for inspiring me to learn to dive. To me, and many others, it's not just "The Silent World", it's a whole new world.
Alex Galaxy Well, he got to go along on an adventure in the Calypso with the Capt. and crew, so he wrote the song. Must have been an awesome journey bc look at the song that came out of it! And it inspires such passion. Didn't do much for the Exxon ppl though . . . Sorry, avid scuba diver and environmental science major when this song was written. Cousteau did the films, promotions, appearances, etc to make money for his research. Tough to do bc ppl thought there was no problem with the oceans, or the ozone layer, or extinction of the species, or the melting of the polar ice caps . . .well, golly gee, they still don't . . .😢
What wasn't know about The Calypso until after Jacques Cousteau's death was that the ship was bought by a British millionaire and former MP Thomas Guinness who then leased it to Jacgues for the princely sum of 1 Franc a year. Thomas had two conditions, that Cousteau never ask him for money and that he never reveal his identity.
John Denver, You are the poet life, you wrote the words and then put them to song. I love you forever. You left us by accident and you left us alone!. I was in Aspen skiing and you came into the lounge of our little hotel, sat on the floor and sang to us, We love you forever, Now you are gone. When my time comes, will you ski the clouds with me? Lindsay Sidwell
John was so keenly able to convey his emotions with his music, and we get a strong sense of how connected he was to God's creation, and to other people. Always the gentleman, always polite, and despite, perhaps, feeling down, he never let on. He was always smiling and upbeat, whether in front of a million people, or just one..
This is the first time in better than a decade that I've heard this song. I love it just as much now as I ever have. It's almost painfully sweet and beautiful. I rank it up with Christopher Cross' song Sailing.
Jacques Cousteau's granddaughter did a category about him on Jeopardy tonight, and one of the questions had to do with the ship and its name, which reminded me of this GORGEOUS song after many years!
@@1940limited I agree but then I believe everyone of his songs were his best song since I can't think of one that isn't good, how is it possible that one man could be so talented?
@@normanbuchanan9710 Yes, very true! Plus it was nice of John Denver to sing a tribute song to Cousteau's exploration ship. Who else would have thought of that?
This song and all the profit made from it were dedicated to Prof Jacques Cousteau the great underwater explorer and his ship named Calypso. Cousteau's children and grandchildren carry on with the legacy. One of them is often seen on CNN. Incredible family who opened our eyes to the glory of the oceans.
But the original Calypso laid off the coast of Canada until dismantled in 1968. Built by the English. Made obsolete by another ship built by the Germans. (Discovery Channel)
I listened to john denver when i was a child and all of a sudden this song popped into my head after not listening to it for maybe 2 or 3 years tops i promise u no matter what kind of music u listen to if u ever listened to classic older music it always WILL catch up on u

My wife’s favourite JD song. If anyone gets a chance to see “Rocky Mountain High...an evening of John Denver” I recommend it highly. Produced by Rick Worrall, it covers 21 of John Denver’s most-loved songs. I saw it at First Ontario Concert Hall in Hamilton Ontario just this past Tuesday. Backed by the 53 piece Hamilton Symphony Orchestra conducted by world renown composer, arranger and conductor Lee Holdridge. GREAT PERFORMANCE! BRAVO!
It's hard to believe that both John Denver and the son of Jaques Cousteau died in private planecrashes both piloting their own plane. Jaques Cousteau has also passed away and the ship 'Calypso' has sunk, but was salvaged and docked for restauration. But who knows what the status of Calypso is today? And what will become of it? Cousteau was a very early environmentalist and with his expeditions, which he turned into TV shows and magazine articles, he raised awareness among people and politicians about the need to preserve nature. Cousteau was a great man and John Denver knew it.
It makes me sad that now there are tons of plastic in our oceans and even microscopic particles in our blood; yet I still use plastic. I wish this song inspired more funds to protect our planet and it's oceans, forests, lakes, streams, mountains and provided means for all to enjoy our natural environments, parks beaches (and keep them clean and safe!).
