2020 Jeep Gladiator | Family Review

  • Thanks to my day job at Kelley Blue Book, I drive and review lots of cars. Today I’m driving a 2020 Jeep Gladiator. This particular Gladiator pickup is the Overland trim featuring a 3.6-liter V6, four-wheel drive (of course), and a range of options that bump its MSRP from $40,395 to a lofty $54,790 including destination charges. No, the Gladiator ain’t cheap.
    Then again, the Jeep Gladiator should hold its value well over time, just like the resale-value-leading Jeep Wrangler. Also, the 2020 Gladiator is arguably the most fun midsize pickup truck you can buy. Not only is it highly capable off-road but the top comes off for open-air frivolity. So, even though its expensive (doubly so with dealer mark-ups) the Gladiator is an alluring entry into the midsize pickup segment.
    To see how Jeep’s new pickup fares as a family truck I dragged my wife and daughter to the nearest off-road park for some dirty, dusty, muddy good times. Along the way we discussed important stuff like interior comfort, child seat installations, safety features, and styling.
    And just so the premise is ultra-clear, this is not a comprehensive review but rather a casual look at the 2020 Jeep Gladiator, while I live my normal life. Simple. Fun! #MicahDrives

      When I went off road with my 8 month old in the car, it knocked my baby to sleep. Putting babies to sleep is a Jeep’s wrangler’s amazing because Jeep’s aren’t made with “quiet” or “ less movement” in mind like other vehicles. The tire noise, depending on the types of tires you have, will lull your child to sleep.

    Oh my God. What a great review! Would've loved an overall opinion on the whole package in one spot, but it was great to have a kid in the car and the wife giving her opinions. Really puts things in perspective and removed a lot of the hype factor to think about a larger purchase like this more seriously.
    Since you're coming at it from the practical angle, I would love to have your opinion on maintainability and lifetime cost compared to similar vehicles in these reviews. Thanks!

    • @MicahMuzio
      @MicahMuzio  Před 4 lety +2

      First, thanks for the kind words! I love making car reviews with my family, so it's great to hear they're appreciated.
      As for lifetime costs, my daily employer Kelley Blue Book is better equipped to answer that. Digging into KBB's 5-year Cost To Own figures the Gladiator should be slightly cheaper to own than an equivalent Toyota Tacoma or Chevy Colorado. The Tacoma has slightly better resale figures than the Gladiator while the Colorado is much worse. Interestingly, KBB's numbers peg the Gladiator as the cheapest to maintain. I'm not quite sure why that would be the case.
      Anecdotally I'd chose the Tacoma over the Gladiator if reliability were my top concern. But personally the ability to drop the top might inspire me to overlook Toyota's perceived reliability advantage.

    4:59 Good point. In my experience, I’ve run into 2 schools of thought in setting up your mirrors correctly. I believe a car and driver or road and track article addressed this. I argue that you should set up your mirrors wider to minimize the blind spot as much as possible, as well as looking over your shoulder

    Not that it matters to them but Jeep priced themselves out of a customer. I LOVE this truck but at $55k for a mid-tier Gladiator Id sacrifice some capability for a better equipped and much more practical/comfortable Ram Rebel

    Re: an aesthetic choice. It’s the “Jeep lifestyle” - 99% of these will never go off road and never have anything in the bed. But here’s the important part - owners don’t care. It gives them the image they want and that’s more than good enough. We can discuss all day whether it’s worth the money or not, but gladiator owners don’t/won’t care. I won’t be getting one, but I won’t judge those that do. Beautiful vehicle, just not for me.

      Hector Rod you are correct. I think c&d wrote up an article on the whole blind spot thing. There is a way to adjust mirrors such that there is no blind spot. All you need to do is look slightly to the side and rest is mirrors. But this requires adjusting side mirrors such that you can’t see sides of your car in them, which makes most people disoriented I guess. Driving forward and looking backward for shoulder checks is scary haha.

    Did your daughter's car seat fit well in the back seat? I know you mentioned latching it to the hook behind the seat was harder, but I was wondering if the seat was large enough to accommodate her car sear. My 2.5 year old son has a full size convertible car seat, forward facing and my husband wants to get the Jeep Gladiator and I was wondering about having enough room for his car seat

      Our daughter's car seat fit well enough but I wouldn't say there was a ton of space for her in the back of the Gladiator.

    Hi Micah, great review, i am really thinking about buying this vehicle, but want to make sure it is family friendly. Have a two year old, and family may grow eventually. You touched on the subject, but do you think the interior is too small for a family plus all things the one have to carry around with a child?

    • @MicahMuzio
      @MicahMuzio  Před 4 lety

      Hi, Edgardo! We really liked the Gladiator and I think you could probably make it work as a family hauler.
      That said, I would definitely test fit your child seat prior to committing. A rear-facing car seat might be tight. I'd also verify that there's room for all the other gear you need. Based on my experience you'd probably need to use the bed to haul a stroller and other essentials. That means adding a tonneau cover and perhaps some sort of cargo divider to keep your stuff from sliding around the bed.
      All things being equal, a Wrangler is probably more family friendly but there's ways to make the Gladiator work if you absolutely adore it.

    I don't usually comment on vehicle prices. I figure everyone has to decide for themselves whether a particular vehicle is worth what a dealer is asking. Personally, I ask myself how much cash on hand I would have to have to purchase vehicle X at price point Y. And on that scale I figure I'd have to have Bill Gates' money and garage space to bring home the Gladiator.

    If you can take the doors off, (and the windows with them), then having the window switches still taking up space in the center of car is dumb. If anything, the window switches should be on the door because you don't need them if you remove the door.

    No mention of the horrible Jeep crash test ratings? A Jeep is fine alone out in the woods, but a death trap anywhere there's the possibility of an accident. Whereas with most vehicles you walk away unscathed, not so with a Jeep.
