Tesla did not need to let anyone go from this productive and successful team. That layoff could save the company a small number of millions per year, meanwhile Musk is demanding a $56 billion pay package. He could have instead demanded a $55.9 billion pay package and kept most of this very successful team. The “need” For a headcount reduction in the Supercharger team is a strawman argument.

I can accept that irreconcilable differences between Musk and the Supercharger division head resulted in her firing, but a sensible CEO would just replace that fired department head with someone more compliant, not fire the whole department only to then realize the blunder and rehire them! What unnecessary chaos and stress for the entire company.

Far bigger guesses than the "pretty wide range of 15-20%" are all the excuses you're manufacturing from the first breath to excuse Musk's actions and belittle the information provided by others (others that were there unlike yourself).
"Elon didn't want to do that at first" "the shade of the story", "there is CLEARLY some emotion from these are former members of Tesla so you have to read into what they're saying" " i don't believe these staff know that 15-20% were cut, it sounds like a guess to me", "nobody knows the context of the Tinucci-Musk meeting" (we do know HIS action, and this is the best explanation anyone has offered).
YOU KNOW NONE of these things. Absolutely NONE. You're making them up to excuse Musk's outrageous, petulant retaliation against an entire group of blameless employees becuase his edict was questioned by one person, probably when his Ketamine was not dialed in. (Now My Ketamine reference is also a supposition, but one with far more circumstantial evidence than the cosdswallop you just served up to whitewash Musk's dbaggery). You just ploughed right into this video with one aim, to cover for Musk. That's poor!
Instead of asking US for facts, why not get your own first instead of giving us a bunch of "It sounds like" and " I don't believe" and "there is clearly emotion" and "Elon didn't want to". It's not OUR job to counter your complete (biased) assumptions, it's yours to make videos based in some facts/research.

This sounds like what he did at Twitter. My training in management taught me that when you have a team that performs, you do everything you can to keep them. This looks impulsive. If there is one thing Tesla has done to beat everyone, it's building a charging network. Nobody but nobody does it better. Hiring people people back after they have been fired puts those people on an emotional roller coaster. However, while Musk might be a technology genius, he doesn't demonstrate much competence in working with people. What he has done is to send a chill throughout the company and a message to everyone, you are expendable and the only one that matters here is Elon Musk.

What it does provide which people fail to take account is the ability to grow in : resilience. Right placement. Discipline. Fortitude. Grit. Patience. Gratitude daily. Focus. Work on your values. Integrity. See the bright side of things. When one door shuts it opens new possibilities.
A lot of people just whine and expect… I can’t be fired ever. 😂😂😂😂 well if you want to think delusional thoughts then win delusional prizes. It is letting go of laggards and employees whose projects are winding down. Some good employees will get caught up in the process. If a division chooses to fight a Musk mandate, the refusal affects not just the manager but the whole team. If the team doesn't support a manager they can go to Elon. If a manager chooses to ignore a mandate they MUST know that their job is not the only job they are risking. THIS IS NOT A FIRST FOR ELON AND I AM COMFORTABLE STATING THAT THIS IS NOT THE LAST TIME A TEAM WILL BE RELEASED EN BLOC. Elon has a light and dark side, with a demon inside him brought forth by the likes of his father and his upbringing. He's not just good or just bad, and like all of us he himself does not enjoy wrestling with his demons. He meant it when he said "you don't want to be me". Walter Issacson's book did a great job illustrating this duality.
I'm not going to pretend that I understand the mind of a hyper active individual that can shape a mountain, nor someone who had went through the amount of trauma he encountered. Trust in business is key. When Elon fired the team rolling out Tesla's charging infrastructure he affected not only the business partners installing the stations but also the legacy car makers who have planed to adopt the NACS charge ports for their own EVs. These other EVs would have added a notable revenues for the entire North American charging system. It will likely affect the adoption of EVs by some consumers who have so far withheld from making the switch because the existing non Tesla charging system is so unreliable.
Losing trust on this scale is a "dumbass" move and Tesla will likely take time to overcome.

I think this is as close to being a Tesla/Musk apologist as can be without going whole hog. The indications are that Musk threw a temper tantrum and went totally stupid. If, in fact, the SC network was profitable when other networks aren't, what the hell is the point of gutting it then reconstituting it? The SC networks was the primary reason I switched from my Chevy Bolt to a Tesla. Just before this fiasco a neighbor asked my my opinion about getting a Tesla and I extolled the SC network and it expansion. Oh what a change in days can make. Frankly, without the quality established by the SC network and the extension, I have a hard time recommending ANY EV for those that road trip a lot. That opinion will only change if other charge networks get their $hit together and put out a quality system.

Interesting that you confirm something i raised a few months or so ago , ie that public charger companies were probably not making profits. I suggested that EV drivers would probably face a crisis of confidence in the charger market, and that they would have to use them or lose them.
The trouble is that the current potential customer base avoid public charging like the plague whenever they can, so it isn't much of a business case. I forecast that more charger companies will retire from the fray and few new ones will join the market to replace them. The only way to reverse this trend is to find a way to get EV drivers to somehow subsidise the public charger network through taxes on home charging or similar. Taxpayer subsidy is unsustainable, and governments will get increasing pushback for wasting money on subsidising EVs when other services are left wanting for cash.

Here's a reply from an actual USER of both Public and Tesla chargers (in Australia). I actively AVOID Tesla chargers whenever possible because they are usually THE most expensive, usually by 20 to 30 percent compared to the public chargers (and I'm talking about the 350kW chargers, not the 50kW ones) which are around 50% cheaper than Tesla, sometimes even lower, depending where they are. The only time Tesla is competitive is in off peak hours, but who wants to get out of bed at 3am to go charging? Not me (usually), but I would if I had to, on a long trip for example. However that is not usually a problem because I do a lot of driving in the outback, (10 million+ square kilometres), and there is only ONE Tesla charger serving that whole area (Dubbo NSW).

Tesla is trying to bring all current construction costs current and paid before work begins again. Some of the higher-ups went to the Mercedes Charge team for the IONNA network. Latest layoffs at Ford
April 2024: Ford is delaying EV production at its Oakville plant and extending layoffs for 2,700 workers to 2027.
June 2023: Ford is eliminating engineering jobs in Canada and the U.S. as part of its Ford+ restructuring plan.
August 2022: Ford is laying off approximately 3,000 non-unionized workers in a bid to lower costs as it shifts its focus to electric vehicles.
September 2020: Ford is looking to cut 1,400 jobs in North America. The decision comes as the automaker attempts to reduce its losses and get an $11 billion restructuring program on track.
May 2019: Ford is laying off 10 per cent of its global salaried workforce, approximately 7,000 workers, as part of a restructuring plan designed to save the company $600 million annually.
........ And yet we don't see article after article on Ford's layoffs and nothing from former employees? Seems very strange, all these articles focused on Tesla have been coming out daily from many different News outlets!!

The Supercharger Network is only growing in USA and Canada, and that growth is likely slowing over the next few years. This is due both to anti-EV (and anti-Musk/Tesla) marketing campaigns successfully shifting mass sentiment away from fully electric cars and towards hybrids in the USA, and forthcoming higher capacity batteries and more efficient motors resulting in longer range electric vehicles that need less frequent Supercharging. Improving autonomy may also enable a shift towards private fleet charging and more efficient use of the public Supercharging Network.

Channel "The Energy Show" just reported that "Elon Musk Is Right About The SuperCharger Business"
Superchargers are underutilized and held captive buying overpriced energy from the utility companies.
Many fast charging sites are loosing %16 instead of making money. Maybe that was an average of %16.
So we have a manager who is rightfully proud of what she is doing. But!
Did you notice Elon said they would expand some existing sites but slow down on new site construction.
In other word put the chargers where the demand is and not lose money.
Quite possible that She has/had tunnel vision regarding expanding the net into areas that would be unprofitable.
It also explains why Tesla was willing to allow other makes of EVs to charge at its superChargers.
Increase the utilization of underutilized money losing locations.

This is completely the opposite to how things are in Australia. Here, Tesla has signed at least one, and probably more, multi year PPA (Power Purchase Agreements). They buy power direct from the suppliers (large solar and wind farms) bypassing the retailers. The going rate for PPA's is sub 2c/kWh. Tesla sells it for 70c-85c/kWh. That's one hell of a markup. The profits are HUGE (but so is the CapEx). The profit numbers are in the last financial report from a few weeks ago.

My dream is that they are finally transitioning away from 8 stalls per leased parking lot to building out a worldwide network of Tesla branded charging sites along the lines of that huge one between LA and SF with the lounge. All that government money lets them start doing that, not that they need it with all those billions in cash on hand. It would be a branding win since most non-EV owners don't even know about the supercharger network because they are so low profile that they are easily overlooked (except maybe in California). It would make it more "real" in their minds to see giant charger sites along the interstate.

Like trumpers, musk fans need to learn to be more objective. The fact is the M3 and Y have been the two main products carrying Tesla’s success. The charging network is the best in the industry though it’s contribution is modest. Everything else remains work in progress and unproven. Institutional investors, at least the top six, have shed 30% of their holdings from the peak, reflecting their concerns. And the board and Musk are demanding that Musk be granted a $50B package. Musk has always been erratic and probably is no longer fit for leading a (great) mature company.

  • @neilfromclearwaterfl81

I suppose this was good for Chargepoint and the competition unless Tesla gave them a metered severance package with monthly payments over a course of time as long as they are not working for a competitor or industry doing similar work plus requiring that they provide technical support for those taking over their workload. Most layoffs with severance have a Non-Compete clause with the timed severance payout forfeited if you violate the terms.
Yes they can't prevent you from getting a job with a competitor but they can hold severance pay hostage. Most won't violate the non-compete in order to get the full amount of severance. Of course this is costly for the business since they will still be sending out paychecks and providing group health insurance basically paying workers to stay home for several months to a few years depending on the length of the severance package. Many will go to back to school while getting the severance checks or get a job in a non-competing industry and use the severance checks to buy down mortgages, etc.
Talking to the media and saying something negative about the company is usually an automatic forfeit of severance.
    Best!
