    I'm from Reading- it's awesome to see the RDG-oxford route in the colours of engines when I was young enough to be kayaking on the river next to tilehurst station and visiting friends who live close to Pangbourne. then there are the memories of visiting Didcot as a child for the steam railway they had/have there.
    Thanks for the flashbacks :)

    My uncle was a 1st north western driver for 10 years, yes they do all know each other. He drove Holyhead - Chester/Crewe. At the end of the shifts they ride back in groups haha. Even the guards and ticket officers get involved. Like one big family. My other uncle was a steam coal man before WW2. During WW2 he learned to drive tanks and HGV's so much so he automatically got his HGV licence and Drove trucks the rest of his life. Ill never forget he reversed his truck with tanker into my aunties urban street, so tight it was unreal.

    It was quite cool to see some of my local area :D
    Three of the cooling towers at Didcot Power Station A were demolished two years ago. Part of the boilerhouse was demolished a few months after that. Half of what was left of the boilerhouse collapsed in February of this year and what was still standing was demolished in July. There are still three cooling towers and a few chimneys, as well as the still active Didcot Power Station B.
    The quarry at 29:00 was just that, not sure why it looks like it was filled with water though since it is active in real life. There's a landfill site nearby too.

    That marshalling area near oxford is usually quite empty, but it usually has a rail/ballast replacement vehicle sat there at least and occasionally a freight train.

    The BR Class 166 is powered by a 350 hp Diesel engine coupled to a hydraulic transmission, powering 2 axles on each car via a drive shaft and final drives. The transmission device would switch from hydraulic mode into mechanic mode at around 50 mph, linking the engine, drive shaft, final drive and axles mechanically, hence the drop in engine RPM while accelerating.

      Huh? Dovetail has owned train sim since forever. They were Rail Sim or something like that and rebranded last year or in late 2014 to Dovetail Games, but it's still the same company and the 2015 and 2016 major game updates were still free.
      New scenarios and locos etc. though were always extra.

    I managed to find a way to get to Tilehurst 3 about 10 seconds before due time using trail and error judgement and a lot of luck regarding timing. Soon as the game starts at Reading instantly reverse the train at the station before anything else for about 20-30 odd yards backwards then break quickly at 84%. Soon as it stops quickly allow the passengers on. Push direction forward but don't move until you hear the doors shut. At the same time judge the Class 47 train ahead causing the red light, especially the last waggon when clear changing track. Open the 166 up whilst the lights are still red and hope you get around 8 to 10mph leaving Reading passing the light just as it changes. Have tried everything even putting the Sander on but haven't found a method after arriving at the first two stations of keeping time after that.

    On the physics of the class 166: I've been on these trains a lot irl (they operate into Paddington and Marylebone, my two local commuter lines)
    They actually accelerate faster in real life than in the game - the simulation gives weirdly non linear acceleration as if the engine takes ages to throttle up, which it shouldn't (between Twyford and Maidenhead stations the real trains get right up to the rev limiter, 90mph). However the braking seems pretty realistic - actual GWR drivers tend to be pretty cautious when slowing for stations. I've found in order to stop well you need to be doing 25-30 mph on full service braking to stop in the middle of the platform.
    I'd recommend looking for steam workshop scenarios for this route as some of them are MUCH better than the stock ones (search "no sleep till London", that one's excellent but long).

  • @TrainTrackTrav
    @TrainTrackTrav Před 8 lety

    Great to see you playin' in TS2016. The reason a lot of switches in the cab of this train don't work, is most likely because this train (and route) is one of the default trains that came with Kuju Rail Simulator from back around 2008. I heard that the TS group won't be attending any gaming events due to lack of funding. That's just what I heard, I'm not trying to start rumors. Anyway, great video as always, Paul!
    PS: The Class 166 is the Renault of the train world. ;-)

    You should try to find a Norwegian scenario. We might not have a track along the western coast. We might not have a line further from Oslo than Bodø. But what we do have, are the great 72 and 73! They slide quickly along the southern line with all the speed the terrible terrain will allow them - but dang it, we never give up! We can accelerate like mad and break so hard gran will spill her coffee.
    Ungå en 166 - Ta 73 toget
    But seriously, my local (Stavanger) train time table is incredibly lenient. I often take the train back and forth to kill an hour. I did it today, - just after the morning rush. The train was going at maybe 75% speed or less and it was on schedule. The is apparently some scenarios - though, I con`t have the game so I can`t test it. Wish it was good, because the type 73 (ICE) and 72 (Local) are fast and agile (120-160 kph with top speed of 210 around Oslo-Gardemoen.)

  • @tobysummers471
    @tobysummers471 Před 7 lety

    I know people who worked anf drove these units in the late br era
    The chiltern units are far better accelerating the 165/0s only 75mph due to the gradients on the route. The 166s and other 165s are very slow at accelerating in real life but their brakes are very good. Very poorly modelled in train simulator. However braking and acceleration are very accurate. Lots of them have had incidents over the years but they are some of the most reliable diesel units on the British rail network to this day. Big fan of your videos thanks for uploading.

I remember this scenario as well and I believe the timings are unachievable. Enjoying hearing your opinions on DTG, you sum them up very well. IMO, they're, lazy, slack in their offerings & are uninterested in the end user and other companies, DLC show them up, time and time again.

  • @michaelkalus7802
    @michaelkalus7802 Před 8 lety

    I have been wondering about the DLC aspect as well. Theoretically they could re-implement their scripting system for the old scenarios and just run them in the engine. The main difference seems to be the switch in the game engine, their scenario editor / world editor is something they will probably have to write from scratch. So technically it should be possible to carry the scenarios forward into the new version.
    Now if they WILL be doing this remains to be seen, but if not, I can tell you I will be pretty pissed as I do have a lot of their scenarios, but I have also stopped buying more until they can actually clarify what will happen.
    Way back two years ago when they first talked about "rebuilding it from scratch" they did hint that you may not be forced to automatically upgrade to the 2017 version as it has been thus far. Now if they said this so that people could "continue to play the old routes and scenarios" or if it was because people were concerned about HW requirements, who knows. But Dovetail really runs a risk to alienating a whole lot of people.
    Oh, and a few months ago they did had a video on the XBOX detailling that Trainsim would be coming to the XBOX as well in the fall, which makes me think that we will see the new version this year.
