How To Fix A Car Shift Linkage Cheap and Easy

- If the shift linkage on your car is loose or broken, there's a good chance the collet has broken and fallen out. Most car companies don't sell the collet separately. They only sell the whole cable, which is expensive. In this video I show you how to fix a car shift linkage cheap and easy, building your own collet out of a shock absorber bushing and some washers. If the shift linkage on your car is loose or broken, watch this video and then go look at your car and see if you can fix your shift linkage the way I fixed mine. If it works, it costs less than $10 and will last a long, long time.

@@hoohoohoblin Hi
Yesterday, I encountered a situation where a mechanic attempted to charge me an excessive amount for a repair that was not necessary. The issue was not with the shift cable, as the mechanic had claimed, but rather with the bushing. I was able to rectify the problem myself. Thanks to this video.
Glad I could help. The same thing happened to me. They wanted me to charge me a crazy amount of money for a new cable.
My mechanic was in the hospital when mine broke off. I told him I was going to take it to Express so they can fix it since he was in the hospital. He told me I better not dare go pay all those $100's+ of dollars when all he can do is put some zip ties on it for free. Well the next day after getting out the hospital... He came in zip tied it all up. Now it works fine.
What was your car doing at 1st I hope this is my problem
How long did the ties last ?

Very good video! No bullshit, strait to the point! Short "how to" videos are the best!
That’s how I try to do them. Thanks. I’m glad I could help.
Brilliant video! I just had the same problem on my Ford Focus. Bought the parts, followed your instructions, and my shifter has never been as smooth! Also, that was a darn good That's What She Said joke.
Thanks! I'm glad I could help.
Thanks!!!! I just came from the drug store and I couldn't get my van into gear. so I said I have a major transmission problem. I opened the hood and found the link connection off. So all I have to do is what you did. great work.
+rose valente you're welcome. I'm glad it was a simple fix for you.
Excellent tutorial my friend. This is exactly what I needed today! Thanks!
+Jon David Croel You're welcome.
Hey man
@hoohoohoblin me too thanks dude
my Sunfire's shifter linkage must have snapped went to shift into fifth at 115 km's and it just wouldn't ended up being stuck on the highway at 4:30 am, really wish I would have thought of this then still thank you a bunch.
genius at work, very helpful. And that "what she said" line was funny.
+Denis Gebauer Thanks!
Just saved myself money after watching this video. I fixed mine with a solid zippy tie - works like a charm. Thank you!
lol, I just did the same thing.
How did you fix it with the zip tie
Love the comment about greasing the rubber......quality!
Great video, I am having this problem with my brother's 1999 Cougar V6.
I have made a temporary repair with a lump of plastic as the bush, and a modified split-pin, but now I've seen this video, I will use this method.
Interestingly, I found the two bolts that secure the ball-joint block under the gearstick were loose too......this was also the case on my own 1998 Cougar, so this may be worth checking as well.
Thank you for a very helpful video!
You’re welcome. I hope it works well for you.
Great video, Mr. MacGyver! You gave me the idea to keep some spare rubber bushings/washers/clips in my truck. Thank-you, sir!
You’re welcome
My third video to watch about this and you're the only one to give a zoom out of where it is!!! Very thankful for this video!!! 😊😊❤🎉
Glad it was helpful!
Mine just broke today, lucky I had some cable ties to get home with. Now time to get a bush and clips.
My bushing finally wore away and disappeared after 16 years.Took it to the auto shop where, for $70.00,they installed a new one from a GM repair kit.
It lasted for 20 minutes until I got to work.Blew off somewhere on the interstate.
Gonna take your approach and fix it myself.
I hope it works for you. On my car, it lasted for a couple of years until I sold the car, and it probably still works today.
Thanks *****! This worked great on my 2002 Ford Escape. The pin wasn't long enough for both washers, but the eclip seems to have locked it on nicely! I appreciate the help!
+theworldhadteeth Great! I'm glad it worked for you.
Subbed! Easiest YT fix I've found for my 2003 Ford Taurus. All the bushings I found didn't fit, were made of nylon and were too difficult to adjust, probably, just to break again! Thank you!
P.S. "That's what she said!" 🤣😂🤣
You’re welcome!! Glad I could help.
Thanks a ton I saved a lot of money doing it myself. Very accuratly described in the video. You are awesome.

Very helpful video, thank you man.. just had that issue in the middle of manhattan at 2 am ,, toll guy ask for 400$ to take it to the shop, look I don’t know nothing about cars, everything I can do is to check oil level and fill up the tank, after wasting your video I learn something new on practice.. if I did.. anyone can do it.. thank you again, Nick, Brooklyn New York
You’re welcome. I’m glad I could help.
thanks so much! it worked. i was freaking out lol 2004 chevy trailblazer 😀

It WORKED!!! Thanks so much for sharing this video! Just got my damn 03 Dodge Neon SXT 5 spd back up n’ running.
You’re welcome.
Is yours still working fine w the repair?
Appreciate the info, creative on the refab piece. Great job on the vid btw.
..."That;s what she said" I cracked up.
+Sunna Clark Thanks! I hope it works for you.
Not the same car but it's what I needed thanks 👍
Thank you for sharing I was will share this with my mechanic!
You’re welcome.
The mechanic will copy the solution and still fool people.
It has been ingenuity and creativity like this that made America a leading nation in the world. Well done.
Thanks
You need to travel a bit....other countries are often MORE inventive, out of necessity. For example Cuba 🇨🇺...has NO mechanics...just magicians 🎩 I have found!
Good Good Young Skywalker , just fixed 1 for a Fiend of mine ,yes I said FIEND !!! Worked perfectly !!! Hasn't been that TIGHT since she got the 2001 Ford Focus 5years ago. Neither has she !!! More of this and U Will B A Jedi Knight !!! I really enjoy when ur having a Really Bad Day and u find HELP from someone and they not only help u they make ur Day a little better with just a funny comment !!! Thank u very much I greatly appreciated that LOL strategy right there !!!
You’re Welcome. I’m glad I could help.
Thank you. I found it. lol. I'm a rookie. 62 year old woman. lol
all fixed. even with the incorrect bushing. can't believe the parts store did not know that. i modified it. it works.
+Tanja Vandenberk You're welcome. I am glad you got it working.
I love it, You go Moma!!
@@hoohoohoblin I'm doing a Google search... Would shift linkage cable bushings the same thing as the collet? Thanks! :)
@@racheljune688 I was wondering the same thing cause that's what comes up when I search it
GENIUS! I DID DO THE CABLE TIES AND IT WORKED FOR A COUPLE OF MONTHS LOL
Because zip ties are easily broken by hand already. These gearlever cables are driven by the gear lever, which, as the name says, is a lever. It multiplies the force you put in it times 5 or so. So that will snap zipties easy. A solution like the guy in the video did is the way to go.
I've done this fix before on a Ford Taurus, I put a bolt and nut to through the whole and it fixed it.
exsxpx1 I need this done to my car
AWSOME BUD LOVE IT!
Thanks!
My Versa linkage come loose at the shifter. It took me longer to remove the console
Fortunately, I had E-Clips and Snap Rings in the handy dandy toolbox.
Thanks for saving me an arm and a leg.👍
You’re welcome
Still useful tips and tricks. I had to MacGyver my daughter's Chevy Spark using this method, although I used a piece of 3/8" vinyl tubing as my local Autozone didn't have crap.
I’m glad you got it fixed.
I have the exact same transmission on my 04 focus. Just like you, the bushing/collet is completely gone....the weird thing is the car shifts just fine. I've never noticed any problem until tonight when i went in there to drain the transmission. Now my quick drain and refill job is turning into a bit more of a pain in butt. Thanks for video...i'm hoping i can find a bushing for it instead of Mcgyver-ing a new one :-)
You’re welcome. Mine still worked without the collet, but it felt loose.
Great info bud. 👍👍
Thanks
i have wiered problem on toyota yaris 04 sometimes cant change any gear while running but when i release pedal up again then push it i can change gear even when engine off gears stuck sometimes
this helps me a lot. i was driving on the highway in my 2001 ford focus 5 speed. and i shifted into 5th gear and felt the shifter basically break. then when i went to kick it in neutral or downshift it wouldn’t move. admittedly i’m new to driving a manual i thought that i blew a tranny. so i called my dad and we looked at it and determined it was a linkage under the car. now we just need to get the pary

You are smart bro !!!!! I love that idea 💡
Thank you! Cheers!
Good job man
Thanks
very nice fix....ty for sharing.
RobsPackanShine You're welcome. Things like this frustrate me, when a manufacturer doesn't make the part I want. In this case, the collet has a part number in the Ford catalog, but they discontinued it and now only sell the whole cable for $175.
whoa....didn't know that.
excellent video
Thanks.
Hey hope your great ! I have a 1998 sentra, I shift into reverse it works perfectly, but when I shift into any of the drives it won't go, but at times it does catches drive, and then it's perfect till I turn the car off. When I turn it back on it does the same again some time I just put it into drive and accelerate really soft and it catches drive and then it runs perfect again, thanks for your help!
That’s really strange. I wonder if there is something electrical turning off the transmission. Maybe there’s a sensor that stops it from working when the transmission is in park. I’m not sure.
If anyone tries this with a trailblazer it will not work, sorry. but this is amazing and a trick I will always have up my sleeve now, much appreciated!!
+Johnny Gonzalez Thanks. I'm glad I could help.
+hoohoohoblin use p/n 615-1434 from napa, has the bushing that fits perfectly into place and is a lot better quality than oem. $12 and lub done and over with.
I'm subscribing just for the "that's what she said" joke 😂
Thanks
good job! you can use acid free grease that will not damage the rubber.
I'm pretty sure dorman sells these shifter grommets there usually in the auto parts store on a dorman spinning rack I believe it's a universal shifter linkage kit there's usually a worn-out one at the bottom of the interior shifter too
Interesting mine is more ball and socket and after breaking down recently I am currently clipping it on by hand.
Can you do an updated video because my Holden Ve has stop shift and won’t kick over and just wanting help with finding where the shift rod is
I know. Those "that's what she said" jokes are hard to resist. Lol.
Thanks!
Where did you go to buy the e-clips, please? I need to do this on my Ford Focus.
excellent thinking brain here... subbed
Thanks and welcome
OMG THANK YOU!!!
You’re welcome
Thanks I'm gonna try it
You’re welcome.
8 year old post but here goes. Couple days ago my gear stick was stuck due to some very cold conditions here in the UK at present. After idling for 5-10 mins it loosen but I was wondering if it may need greased or if there is any potential hack we could use to stop this from happening? When I say cold, its only between -2 and -5 which isn't all that cold tbh - but the problem is a bit of a pain.
anyone know of a bushing that would work on a 2004 saturn vue automatic transmission? The rubber thing fell off so the cable won't stick in place like the video
Awesome 👍🏾
Thank you so much. Bought an assortment E-Clips at O'Reilly, $6.99+tax. Fixed 2010 Kia Forte.
You’re welcome
So I guess out of curiosity would this work out for a 02 Camry? Gear shift gave out last night (no resistance at all when switching gears with the break engaged even), and now it's stuck in reverse.
It's worth a try. Have someone move the shifter around, and look under the hood and under the car to see if you can find where it has become disconnected. It is probably a similar setup.
Will this cause a floor shiftier to be stuck in park?
Awesome video. Thanks a lot.
+Neil Williams Maybe, if it has come completely disconnected down below, and the shifter moves freely but the car stays in park. If it’s stuck in park and you can’t get it out of park, and it is an automatic, then it is probably a problem with the switch on the brake pedal. A lot of cars have a switch on the brake pedal that stops you from taking it out of park unless you have your foot on the brake.
If the brake lights work, does that mean the brake switch is good? 2002 Nissan Maxima 3.5
With the key to on position and my foot to the brake pedal, it does not work.
This car was in a flood. The water was above the brake pedal.
Could the flood have messed up the brake switch?
Thanks for your reply and help.
Great video, I now know what i am looking for as haynes manual was useless and garage just told me that i need a new gear box, i only took the car in because could not get car into third gear when was it's running but can when not running, everyone i spoke to said it would most proberly broken linkage collar. I think some was out to rob me!!!!. Thanks and fingers crossed now that it is as simple as that.
You’re welcome.
What year, make and model of vehicle did you do this to? And it was a manual transmission correct?
I recently went over a speedbump too fast. Had to replace my drivers side cv axle, suspension stabilizer link bar, and the spindle steering knuckle(which cracked in two). I replace all the parts but now it wont move went i turn it on. I tried shifting to drive or reverse and it wont move at all. Its make a slight screeching sound like a door that needs lube when i set it back to park. Does anyone have the same problem? Its a 2009 cobalt automatic.
Wow nice!!! I would have used a drimmel ti cut out that sleeve tho
My pontiac gt g6 3.5L shifts good just when I put it in reverse it engages but doesn't move help
I encountered this exact scenario today while at an ATM. Shifter stopped working, collet was busted in half. My dad is working on making one of these for me but in the meantime, is there any makeshift materials you would recommend to keep them together? We tried duct tape but it melted after about 15 minutes of driving.
+Oliver Hill not sure what would work. The heat is definitely a factor. Doing it the way I did in the video is easy and fast, and any auto parts store will have the parts you need.
Anyway I fix mone using this method and I spent 2.55€ OMG thank you dude. Instead of shock absorber I used the rubber for chair... Full working and Amazing but I think I should check it in a month and see if it is intact
You’re welcome. I’m glad I could help. It’s definitely a good idea to go look at it after a little while to make sure everything is still in place. Mine worked fine for a couple of years before I sold the car.
@@hoohoohoblin Could you give me a link for the rubber pieces? Because I want to replace mine with some more resistant and made for cars and not for chair :D
They were rubber shock absorber bushings. I don’t remember the exact brand. If you look for replacement shock absorber bushings, you should be able to find something that will work.
I'm replacing the shift linkage short cable on my 02 focus...how long of a job is that? Any videos or websites I can turn to as a guide???
I have never done that. You could try the Focus Fanatics forum at www.focusfanatics.com
can anyone explain how to fix this locked shifter..
lol that's what she said.......
paul rogers lmao i laughed too
I had to go back and listen again....I thought that's what he said...haha.
Haha!! Can't stop laughing haha
And @1:41 and Grease the rubber and shove it in the hole🦸🤪🤪🤣🤣🤣🤯💩🙉 that's what she said!!!!
lol
He said put it on the whole that’s what she said lol just that alone deserves a thumbs up lol😂
@hoohoohoblin thank you for the video quick question though what is the piece that the collet is connected to? mine is cracked😅
Nice video. Michael Scott approves, too.
Thanks
which hole is what he asked her ? ' good vid, and like the E clip. but would like a tighter fit.. ok I see now but mine is a 2002 and will not work like this. what year are you working on ?
+Jay Finke this is a 2001 Ford focus with the split port single cam engine. If you have the Ztec engine, it uses a different transmission.
Was your transmission hesitating before going into gear like a 1 second delay before engaging? Excellent video
No. It was just hard to get into gear. It is a manual transmission.
how do you open that orange clip?
I need an idea on where to find my linkage because my 97 Lincoln towncar wont come out of park my gears wont change as soon as I try to change gears it jus moves nd doesnt catch
If you have somebody move the shift lever well you were under the car looking for things moving, you should be able to find it pretty easy.
In fact, grease will eat up rubber quickly, unless it is silicone grease which don't react with rubber.
thank you
You're welcome
Where does passing gear cable hook up on transmission automatic????please somebody tell me
Artemio Espinosa on the older vehicles there was a cable that ran from the accelerator linkage down to the transmission. On newer vehicles it’s controlled electronically and the kickdown cable has been done away with. We would need the transmission model and year of the vehicle in order to look up which one you have.
How bout a 86 2.8 v6 Camaro.
Nice!
Thanks.
Awesome!
+Edward Thayer Thanks!
Awesome!!!!
Thanks
Don't forget to use a 2x4 too.
Good video.
Thanks
Very good video! Just one question though, how do I access this area on the car?
Jack up the car and go under it. On my car. I didn’t need to remove any covers to get to it. It was out in the open.
Thank u sir
You're welcome.
Would this cause my 1 3 and 5 to feel mushy when going in in gear and make it feel like you can keep pushing the shifter
Yes, it might cause that. On my car I could still get it into gear, but it felt really sloppy.
hoohoohoblin I found out what was causing my problem, I had a bent and stretched cable
I heated a garden hose, and used it works fine for me
will this work for a 1996 ford taurus with a 3.0 engine with column gears?
+Joe White I don’t know, but I bet it is very similar. Any shift linkage is going to have a connector that looks something like this.
