  • Sometimes we need a specific grout colour for a mosaic and in this mosaic tutorial I will show two colourants that you can use to change the colour of your grout.
    **PLEASE NOTE** A respirator mask should be worn at all times even when grouting outside and its breezy, I didnt in this video as I was filming. I always wear one at all times when grouting.

    Peter. Thanks for all the advice. It’s good to work in good ventilated area with silica dust and working in small quantities is good too but please don’t recommend leaving mask off even on a breezy day. It’s when you make a mistake- for example drop the bag or the bag breaks -that you are going to get excessive exposure. Cleaning up spills also hazardous- as is cleaning a recently grouted piece. Transferring grout from the big bag to the little plastic bag is probably when you are most likely going to get a lungful. Even a little bit can harm you and everyday exposure is going to fill up your lungs and slow up your heart.

    Thanks Peter! love all the advice :-) . Being a cook I work with tinting grout like I'm creating a recipe - i.e. I measure/weigh the grout and the tint when I first make it so I actually have a 'recipe' for that particular colour that I've just made and if I want to change the colour then I just adjust the 'recipe' :-)

      A wonderful idea and very wise to have a recipe especially if you need to recreate that colour again, being a cook really does help. :) Thankyou for the share.

    Hi Peter, I am midway through learning and doing mosaics and mostly just hacking away and figuring out things on my own so it is great to see your videos. I have been tinting grout with tole paints (used with decorative painting). I am guessing that it is not a good thing to do? Where do i buy the correct paints for tinting grout? craft store? building supply store? online?

    • @TreasuryRoad
      @TreasuryRoad  Před 3 lety +1

      Hi Carla, Thankyou so much. I would think that the paints you are using wouldn't be suitable for tinting grout or thinset. You can use coloured oxides to tint cement products including grout which are available from hardware stores, places that sell cement products and also from some online mosaic retailers. Tints All colourants is a brand that you can also use and I would suggest you Google that to see who sells them in a store closest to you or where you can purchase them on line. Just be aware that oxides and Tints All have a ratio that you need to follow so you dont add to much. :)

    Hey Peter, thanks for another great instructional video. I’ve not heard of the Tints All until now. Is this what you use for colours such as the blue. And say purple or yellow etc. cos I know oxides are available in bright colours from online shops as you probably know. Are oxides better or does it not really matter.
    Is Tints All specifically for mosaics? Thank you 😊

    • @TreasuryRoad
      @TreasuryRoad  Před 10 měsíci

      Thankyou so much. Tints All was designed to tint paint and concrete not specifically for the mosaic industry in fact very few things are because the industry is quite small. The beauty about these types of products is you don't need much where as using acrylic paint, dyes etc they will fade. They were also not designed to be used for tinting thinset and grout, you also need to much to get the colour intensity and that can compromise the integrity of the thinset or grout. I think around three of the Tints All tints will fade but they mention that and that leaves a lot of choice still. You may also want to check with the retailer on the oxides as well, there could be different qualities. Choose which one suits you best in the colour choices you need. Thanks for watching and commenting. :)

    Thanks Peter, might be a stupid question but if I have gray grout and want to make it darker or want to make it black, I can add enough black oxide to achieve that?
    Thanks and sorry asking too many questions! I’m on a mission ;)
    Cheers

      Not a stupid question, really no question is. I have heard of a few people doing this, I haven't so I cant advise you of the outcome also it would depend on the grey, I buy my grout black, do a test and see if you are happy with the results. :)

    hello Peter thank you for all the advice. i wanted to ask you what can i spray on the surface of my mosaic arts after grouting it, so i keep it clean ( i made a mosaic table, the white grout is becoming dirty and i can't clean the dirt from the grout) thank you

    • @TreasuryRoad
      @TreasuryRoad  Před 2 lety +1

      Hi Dayane, thankyou so much. Using white grout on a table will be extremely difficult to keep clean especially if its sanded grout because its gritty. If its starting to go dirty and cleaning didn't help it then you may be able to use a grout painting pen, this allows you to paint over the grout, generally available from hardware stores specifically for grout. I haven't used one but have seen them. How you keep it clean afterwards Im not sure, anything you pour over it like a clear varnish may or may not work or it may eventually go yellow. However in saying that you may be able to use a product that they pour over slate floors, its clear but you would need to ask first because I have never done that either, generally available at specialist tile stores. These are just suggestions that you will need to do your own research on to see if they will be suitable for your mosaic. Just for future reference a better option would be to use Litokol epoxy grout, because its smoother than sanded grout and waterproof but it is more expensive and avoid white if you can for a table. I hope you solve the issue. :)

    I have learned from you that grout can expire but what about oxide? I have some different colours purchased some years ago and wonder if it is still ok to use?

    • @TreasuryRoad
      @TreasuryRoad  Před 6 měsíci

      Thankyou so much Rachel and that's a very good question one that I haven't been asked before nor can I give you a definitive answer. I don't think they expire but they can be effected by external factors such as storage and chemicals. I would give the manufacture of the oxides a call or where you bought them from just to verify. Thankyou for watching and for your comment. :)
