I wish I had listened to this/Jordan Peterson's life is suffering years ago, because I was what Peterson said at my father's funeral. I wasn't as helpful as I could have been. I was in a very dark place but I'm now I'm improving everyday... I hope.

There are two things that got me through an absolutely agonising physical rehabilitation from a neurological condition If and Batman Begins. That poem hits harder the older I get, and you've given me an idea I've been short of inspiration for how to decorate my dining room - I'm going to get some of that blackboard paint and write it out for the kids to consider over their breakfast.

So be me: teens, been sick about 7 years at that point muscle fatigue aches and nerve pain that persisted through my sleep too so pain killers did nothing. My school threw me under the bus and tried to block me taking my Gcse's, they loved me when I was a high achiever less so when I needed support. Told my family outright they expected me to fail and that would only give them a lower average.
My health was shot, my mind wasn't in a great place and I didn't want to go on. Didn't think I could handle the pain forever and there was no end in sight. When I saw that my kid brother was suffering because he feared me ending myself I decided that wasn't going to happen and I made myself walk around the nearest lake (6 mile walk) and would try to break into a jog. For me at that time that was too much, and the first days were agony I often fell or threw up. But I'd listen to music (the batman soundtrack mixed in there) and keep going believing it would get easier. It didn't and one day I just hit the deck and couldn't get up, I knew that one day I'd give up entirely that the pain and the never ending bullshit would wear me down, and whilst I couldn't bear to hurt my family I had nothing left.
I remember thinking to myself "yeah this is it, this will kill you" but this time I felt a question "but what if it doesn't, what would you be then?" I didn't have an answer but it started a chain of thought that over a year ended with me being able to push through and run those 6 miles. It did get better.
Anyway years later I'm watching batman begins with my kids and there's a line similar to that question I had and realised on some level it had primed me to pose the same thing to myself.
Sorry if that went on a bit, I couldn't think of a pithy answer.
