      Essentially hot housed.
They weren't much better than the US in this game.
XGF were probably 4-3 in USSR favor.
      Don't understand not playing
Steve Baker in net, Mike O'Connell
on D (Langevin was awful) and Mark Howe at C.
Also why weren't Mark Pavelich, Bobby Carpenter and Joe Mullen on the team.
      My US Team
      G Baker Craig VanBiesbrock
      D - O'Connell Langway
      Morrow Roberts
      Larson Dunn
      C - Howe - Broten-Pavelich - Ftorek
      LW- Carpenter-McClanahan-Christian- B. Miller
      RW Mullen-Christoff-Talafous Rowe

Esposito played poorly both Canadian games.
Should have gone with a real US Goalie in Steve Baker.
It was unfortunate that Tom Rowe and Mike Fidler had injuries in
      1979 that curtailed their careers.
Also Bobby Carpenter should have been on this team. Don't understand why Mike O'Connell
      didn't play this game.

Tony O didn't belong. US should have gone with Baker.
This talent pool of US Players could have created 4 US Teams competitive with the 1976 US Canada Cup squad. That's how drastic of an improvement in talent and depth there was.
      G - Baker-Craig-LoPresti-Janaszak-Janecyk-Skidmore
      Vs
      G - Lopresti-Curran
Baker, Craig, Janecyk were better than LoPresti-Curran.

      USA 1981 D pool vs 1976 D Corp
      1976 Top 4 D Corp was
      D-Sargent-Milbury-Chartraw-Nyrop
      1981 4 Team Top 4D (16D)
      LD-Langway-Ramsey-Dunn-Langevin-Roberts-Milbury-Baker-Norwich
      RD-Larson-O'Connell-Morrow-Brownschidle-Micheletti-Hangsleben-Anderson-Chartraw
Milbury and Chartraw only top 4D
in '81 pool. You can debate where Milbury sits in '81 pool, maybe a couple of spots higher but not Chartraw.
Much deeper D Corp when a 4 team group is very competitive with the '76 pool.

US Top 6F in '76 IMO were
      Ftorek-Howe-Talafous-Bennett
      Jensen-Gilbertson
The top 6F in '81 of 4 US Squads of Forwards IMO:
      Howe-Broten-Ftorek-Pavelich-Carpenter-Mullen-Christian-Johnson-Holmgren-Rowe-Eaves Christoff-McClanahan-B. Miller
      W. Miller-Fidler-Talafous-Gorence

Nice win for Canada, but that was with Myshkin in the net. The gallows were being prepared for the Canadians for the final though, an 8-1 drubbing. An embarrassment that Canada can never ever ever live down. That's a score you would expect to see in a bantam vs. peewee game, not a game with Gretzky and Bossy on the losing team.

I read through these juvenile comments and want to laugh but cannot summon enough to overcome the feeling of tragedy in them. The Soviet team was together 345 days a year, year after year undergoing grueling conditioning, while the Canadian and American teams are thrown together for two to three weeks and the selection of players is done by a small group of coaches in an even shorter period of time. Despite this process, Canada has still won the CC every tournament except 81 and two out of three World Cup of Hockey tournaments. We all know Mike Liut turned into a complete sieve this game to top it off. Suggesting that Myshkin was any less a goalie than Tretiak is nonsense.
Look back at my first point about the Soviet team being together all year round for years; what has happened since those days and that system ended? The Russians haven't won a single Olympic gold medal in hockey since then with their best showing being a silver. The Athletes from Russia, a name put on them because they were found doping (back to the future with Putin wanting the resurrect the Soviet union) got gold but Canada sent amateurs. Their showing at the World's since the collapse of the Soviet system is not much better.
One has to take a holistic, 10,000 foot view not a 5 foot view of the situation. Also, let me remind you that Gretzky has more scoring points per game in International play than any other player in history. Recall that he had a 5-point game against the best Soviet team ever assembled in 1987 Canada Cup.
Most comments here have a childish theme driven by nationalism and lacking any critical thinking skill. No wonder the world is in so much chaos.

the Golikov brothers played on their own club teams.
