  • Part 1 of 2. It's one of the rarest video game cartridges in existence. Earth Bound (Mother) was fully ready for release on the Nintendo Entertainment System in 1990, but only got as far as a handful of prototypes. Roo has acquired one of these rare carts and is going in depth to give you all the info he can on it.
Where do each of the carts that have escaped Nintendo of America live now? What's on the circuit board? What does a play through look like? All this and more brought to you courtesy of the Clan of the Gray Wolf.

@SKYLINE12345671 From what I understand, there are 4 ROMs floating out there all from the original 1998 prototype:
Version 1 - Original prototype, doesn’t work on NESticle.
Version 2 - Title changed to EarthBound Zero, impossible to complete (piracy screen).
Version 3 - Piracy problems solved. Word “Zero” on title screen was changed from white to blue.
Version 4 - Version 3 with corrected translations on the battle screen.
Thanks to JamesBond007 on EarthBound Central for that info.

Hello, I have a copy of Contra housed in a 5 screw cartridge shell with a handwritten label. It was included in my first NES System +games package my mother bought for me for Xmas '89 secondhand from a local independent video game designer/tester. I have had it since 1989 and l need to get it dumped to determine whether or not the board contained within it is actually an earlier prototype alpha/ beta test version of the game. It may only be just a sample/pre release copy that was given out shortly before final retail release. I don't know if the board i have is 4 sure a prototype or just a first print retail board but due to the Provenance of where it came from (a game tester) and the fact the label is handwritten and its contained in a 5screw cartridge type.. Contra as we know is a game released for retail in 1988 in the 3 screw/2 tabs rev.a cartridge type. The 5screw carts had been abandoned for at least a year if not longer before the retail version of Contra hit store shelves. So at the very least I believe I have the only 5 screw variant of contra in existence. Its the only one that I know of as I've never heard of there being any others. Which leads me to believe I likely have some type of early beta tester version prototype copy. Because its in a 5 screw cart I have been able to open it and take a look at the board and it definitely seems to be an early version of NES board. All dates on the board say copyright Nintendo 1985 or copyright Nintendo 1986.I think it has the oldest version of the cic lockout chip on the board too, but I may be mistaken on that. I know the cartridge itself predates contra's 1988 retail release for sure being that the game is encased in the 1985 5 screw variant. I would really like to have the game dumped and verify what exactly it is because if it is an early prototype of Contra and the only five screw known to exist I really would like to sell it at auction and try and make myself some good cash cuz I could really use the money for my mother's mounting eldercare expenses. SoCal retro gaming expo is next week do you think if I took the game there somebody would be able to dump this for me, help me verify all of this information to get an idea of what exactly I have here and then help me fundraise some big cash if i am thinking about selling this thing? What should I do or how do I go about this? can somebody help me please? thank you

A nes game rarer than earthbound prototypes is NCC 1991. It was similar to NWC 1990 but there is only one cart left. Retrousb is making repros to prevent the game from extinction once the last cart gets destroyed.

Earthbound for Nes would be like trying to find a needle and a hay stack I knew they had a prototype but finding one would be like trying to find all the rare ones at the same time. I did find an Ewok Adventures Prototype for Atari 2600 once for $1.50 can you believe that lol it went for $1,680 online only 15 to 20 copies exist.

One reason I can think of doing this is to dump the EPROMs online in the absence of a cart copier. I'd open a prototype for that reason if I bought one. Of course I have a ROM dumper/eraser, so I'm probably a bit biased XD.
