Great video! Would you choose the Sony 85mm f/1.8 in the video over the ZEISS Batis 85mm f/1.8 OSS?
Great job on the video Jason! Thanks for making it.
I'm a new subscriber, but I wanted to say your content has been absolutely great. I am just now starting to explore photography as my creative hobby, and I appreciate all the amazing knowledge you share.
I both have the Tamron 17-28mm f2.8 and the Sony 85mm FE, and I love the versatility of both lenses
My exact set up too! Such a good combo
Always good to see new videos. 👍🏻
Thanks so much about the input Jason!
I have the 33 MP a7C2 , which has a crop mode of 14 MP. For my purposes, it is enough. It it fun checking reviews from 2010, when 14 MP was considered excessive!
Back in 2018 when I first got into Sony full frame, those were the exact 2 lenses I first bought. Then I swapped the 85mm for the 50mm 1.4, now it's a perfect setup 😎
The Sony 50 mm f 1.8 is only $250. If you don’t need the extra light, it works amazing for me.
@@schultzeworks these days you can pick up a used 55mm 1.8 for like $400, and that lens is a HUGE upgrade
I miss my 85mm, it got stolen but this video convinced me to get it again. Thank you
Penultimate doesn’t mean what you think it means.
🤣🤣🤣 oh crap
lol first thing i thought
Lol also “NINETY” isn’t spelled how he thinks it is 😂
Maybe he means the penultimate last word in for lenses? 😮
Hey, if you call out an error, why not provide the correct information? Seems like an even worse mistake. Educate.
Finally, a CZcams video from my fav gearhead to help justify to myself why I needed the 16-35GM II and 85 DG DN. Can’t wait for mk ii of the 85.
Btw, I used the 16-35 GMII for my entire trip to Japan a few weeks ago and will be using it for my trip to Fujiyoshida and Tokyo in a couple weeks too. 85 was clutch for detail shots.
My hike to Kiyomizu-dera did not go Vong ;)
Great video! The Sigma 85mm 1.4ƒ DG DN Art and the Sigma 16-28mm 2.8ƒ DG DN C are my go to’s for everyday carry!
Now I feel better about having my 3 main lenses - Sigma 16-28mm, Sony 35GM and my 85mm 1.8.... I do have my 135GM and Tamron 70-180mm for longer shots, but the shorter ones are what I carry day to day and love using on my A7R3. Need to experiment with the super35 mode.
The work ethic is crazy
Awesome video thanks! Would you recommend the same 2 lens setup for an aps-c setup? If not, what would you you recommend? Any light gpu could provide would be greatly appreciated.
For two-lens kits, I like to use a slight telephot and a slight wide-angle. These two lenses allow me to capture 70% of the images I need. To capture the remaining 30%, I need longer telephotos, wider wide-angles, and specialty lenses such as macro, perspective control, fish-eye, soft-focus, and pin-hole.
My favorite two-prime lens kit for my full-frame cameras are:
35mm f/1.4
85mm f/1.4 or 90mm f/2
My favorite two-zoom lens kit for my full-frame cameras are:
28-70mm f/2.8
80-200mm f/2.8
My favorite two-prime lens kit for my APS-C cameras are:
23mm f/1.4
56mm f/1.2
My favorite two-zoom lens kit for my APS-C cameras are:
16-55mm f/2.8
50-140mm f/2.8
Hi there, thanks for all great contents, what gimbal are you using for this camera? Or what gimbal would you recommend? Thanks 🙏
Hi Jason, nice review. Besides the natural light, what key-light & modifier did you use to shoot your talking head video? Looks great
I mainly shoot concerts. My most used lenses are the 24-105 F4 that I bought with my first camera, and a 100-400 F4.5-5.6. My second purchase was a 70-200 F2.8, but the 100-400 has mostly replaced that; the slower aperture is less a hinderance than the 200mm of lost reach. My third most used lens is a 14-24 F2.8, but I use it far less than the other two.
Wait I understand that you’re gaining 200 extra mm but you’re not gonna get as much light nor the creamy bokeh and is it really worth that? I mean I’m really torn between the variable aperature lens vs a low f stop zoom lens. Having used both can you give me a quick review please?
@@mahidharnaraharisetty4212 I use manual with auto ISO. Any loss of light because of the smaller aperture is made up with a higher ISO, which is not a problem with a Sony full frame sensor. I can clean it up further as necessary with software; I use Topaz. I don't need nor especially want a super creamy background; I want to show the subject on stage, not with a totally blurred background.
I do have a 135mm F1.8; I haven't used it much at concerts. It is a fantastic telephoto portrait lens.
Awesome video - what do you use at 00:24 as the yellow/orange background on your table? Is it card?
I have two lenses.
Tamron 28-200mm f/2.8-5.6 and a Sony 20mm f/1.8 because I mostly shoot landscape photos (and yes, sometimes you need 200 for landscapes) and my a7 IV can do APS-C 4K in video so the 20mm can become narrower need be. I’ve tried a 14-24mm Sigma but it was too wide for me. I don’t shoot portraits… almost ever. So I don’t need a 50 or 85 prime.
I switched to Sony this year and that’s the route I took 16-35 but F4 Sony and 85 1.4 sigma (from KEH,lol)
I use the 12-24 and 85 1.4, as a 2 lens setup (no gimbal use though)
Hi Jason, great video and alternative suggestions. I own the Tamron 17-28. While it is not the best, it gets the job done. I do not own the Sigma 85 but borrowed it to test for a month or so. The Sigma is perhaps the sharpest lens I have shot wide open. Another thing I like about the Sigma 85 was how light it felt on the camera.
If I had the budget, I would go all GM lenses. But for budget reasons, I went with an all Tamron line up and totally happy with the results I am getting. I had a chance to shoot the Tamron 17-50 for a few days and it is a fantastic versatile lens. The only "downside" is that it is an f4!
Ummm, I own the sigma 85 1.4 art lens. I totally agree, it’s incredibly sharp, and love it. But light? No it’s not. The Sony zeiss 1.8 is light, and has beautiful color rendition, and is sharp too. Chromatic aberration is present though. And is a bulky lens. I obviously love this focal length though. I’ve wondered about this Sony 85 for travel.
Another Jason video? Let's go buddy
Interesting. I already decided to go this route before you posted this video. And I have to agree , this is the way to go.I can't afford a f2.8 on the zoom though. May go with the cheaper f4pz instead.
@AlpControl
I agree on the 85 mm.
I personnaly use 3 prime lenses
For landscape :
A wide angle needs to be sharp, no flare, nice sunstar, no subject separation needed.
Tamron 24 mm F/2.8 is the perfect budget lens.
Sony 20 mm F/1.8 G or 14 mm F/1.4 GM is needed only if focus on astrophotography (wider aperture) or architecture (wider angle and less distorsion).
For portrait :
A king's bokeh is needed for professionnal looking photos.
Samyang 85 mm F/1.4 AF version 1 aspherical is amazing, very close to the Sony GM for a third of the price.
For general purpose each time I take only one litle lens with me :
Samyang 45 mm F/1.8 is incredibly light and versatile, even closer to human eye focal than a 50 mm, great bokeh.
I use the 85 more than any other lens in my bag…AND it’s the cheapest one! I swear by this lens!! Dont spend the extra cash on the G Master! Well done again Jason!
I picked up the Tamron 20-40mm 2.8 recently and have not been disappointed.
If I have my FF set to APS-C is it the same as cropping or am I missing something? Thanks for another great video Jason!
Atm im rocking the Tamron 35-150 which I really love specially when traveling, Yes its a little heavy but I've done 10h hike in Iceland without a problem :) I do intend to get the 16-35 GM to complement the kit. Also bought the Samyang 50mm FEII on a fluke and its really nice.
I've been on a Sony zoom kick lately and I'm loving it. Sold my last prime (Sigma 35mm f/1.2) to pick up the 16-35 GM II. So now I'm on a full zoom kit for my a1 and a7SIII. Sony 16-35 GM II f/2.8, Sigma Art 24-70 f/2.8, Sony 70-200 GM OSS II f/2.8, and the Sony 200-600 G. I always have the first 3 with me and it's easy to toss in the 200-600 when needed. So it's SUPER easy to pack out knowing there's no prep for the lenses. I know what fits in my bag every single time and no longer have to play the "this one or that one" game!
Most versatile and complete range. But nothing really Art oriented without any fast prime lens. You have to work harder to have cinematic beauty shots. That's the downside.
@@heretikpapy f/2.8 is plenty fast for the work I do and style I prefer! Definitely not hating on faster glass as it very well has a place in photo and video. I just never liked going wider than f/2.0 and rarely if ever enjoyed shooting f/1.2 or f/1.4. I'm not sure what you mean by nothing really art oriented but I'm certainly not having to work hard to get good shots. That's the beauty of art, it's subjective!
Mike, you got me thinking. I have the Sony a74 and the Sony A7S3, and right now I have only the Sony 200-600mm G. I was thinking about Sony 35mm f1.4 GM and the Sony 24-70mm f2.8 GMii. After watching this video and reading your post, I am wondering about something like the 16-35mm f2.8 GMii and a prime like the 50mm F1.4 GM instead. We just retired and most videos/photos would be from our travels.
what can you say about the sigma 18-50mm f2.8 for apsc? nice video as always!
Been looking for lenses to pair with 85mm. Can’t afford the GM, PZ 16-35f/4 for me.
I just recieved my 85mm/1.8 (Black Friday deal so even cheaper) after rewatching your old videos recommending that focal length. I might be a bit of a sharpness freak as my go to setup now will be A7rV, 20-70mm f4 and 85mm f1.8. Two ridiculously sharp lenses that are cheaper than GMs and body that can go to aps-c and keep twenty-six megapixels of razor-sharp goodness.
Very nice! The 20-70mm has been growing on me recently. I might be picking it up!!
On a recent trip to Thailand I had the a7cII with 12-24 f2.8 and the 24-70 f28. As well as the RX100vii. I ended up only using the RX100 and the 12-24. The former was when I wasn't really going out to shoot something specific and the a7cII when I was specifically going to shoot stuff.
Nice choices. I have the Sigma 14-24 F2.8 and the Sony 24-105 F4 for my A7RIII. To this point I haven't needed or even wanted any thing else.
exactly the same setup here, although I just got the 100 400 gm and I am loving it
@@simonechellini7309 Nice. The 100-400 is probably the only thing I'd add to my kit at this point. Though I do have an old Kiron 105 F2.5 Macro and a Lens Baby Velvet 56.
Sweet combo, slightly different is my choice though. I keep that sweet 16-35 plus my terrific 50 1.2 GM2.
I have the GM 1635 and am contemplating on the 50mm 1.2...$2k...ouch.
what do you recommend for fitness videos and occasional food video/pics
Hi Jason
I'm new to the world of photography, looking to buy my first professional camera, really like the a6700 or the fx30, I'm planning to do more photography than video, but i do want a camera to do both.
What camera do you think I should go for?
Thanks
I have 3 lenses 20mm f1.8, 35mm f1.8G, 85mm f1.8. All Prime lenses.
Good choices.
16-35 1.8 would be interesting too,
but I would take 150-400 f4 (rumored) as the second.
I have 35-150 tho so I'm already going for 3 with 12-24 and tele in that instead.
13mm and 24mm primes on ASPC. Wide, fast and light. Great if you don’t mind cropping into your 24mp image from time to time. Mild tele is tempting however…
I primarily do travel and landscapes. My main lenses are the 24-70 GM II and the 70-200 GM II. Those two lenses cover 90% of what I shoot.
i use 24 and 135...great recommendations.
For me, the 24-105mm and 100-500mm give the greatest versatility and continuous focal ranges.
Hi Jason. Wanted to know which flash you recommend for the a6700.
This pair is always my to go lenses too but with 16-35 GM i
If I get a wide angle zoom lens & use the crop mode too - fors it then still make sense that I get the 28-75mm from Tamron - or does the wide angle zoom lens do that you? - And then i can invest in a telephoto instead? Its for Sony a7cii and for videos
i woulda said 35+85 bc of the 1.4/1.8 bokeh but that would be like a wedding kit, i can see why the 16-35 would make it much more versatile
Ey yo Vong, can you make a Quickie Wiki comparison of 10-18mm apsc vs 16-35 FF comparison please? Don’t care about the image quality but want to know about the distortion. A 10mm crop is equal to 15mm FF field of view but is still a 10mm cropped and not a true 15mm FF. the reason why I ask is because of the sigma 10-18 2.8 solution I bought for my a7iv wide angle 4k60. The thing weighs like a feather so I’m packing that with my 24-70 2.8 and 85 1.4 sigmas.
Hello, I need your help. I bought an Atamos for my Nikon Z9. How do you record the evf while shooting pictures. Every time, after I shoot 2 pictures, the Atamos stops recording. How can I make the Atamos continually record the evf even if I shoot 100 pictures ??? Thanks man!😀
Currently for my a7c I have the Tamron 28-75 2.8 which I use 90% of the time and love. But for the wide end, I recently picked up the Viltrox 16 1.8, which is super fun to use and has excellent quality for the price!
viltrox is amazing
This sounds like the kind of setup I’m looking for, you’d recommend?
@@adventuresofaarontaylor Absolutely, the only thing "missing" is a telephoto. I mainly shoot photo, and my setup is plenty for my current needs
I have an a7c, and I'm feeling like crap about my lens choices this far. I have a Sony 50mm 1.8, Samyang 24mm 2.8, Sony 30mm Macro 3.5 (it's a crop tho), and Sony 16-35mm f4 PZ G
Hey vong im thinking of purchasing the 16-35mm, would it be compatible with the Sony zve-1 full frame camera? Also does the 85mm mentioned in the video, will work for sony zve-1?
Tell me a lens which can focus at around 20cm (APS-C or FullFrame). Thanks!
Hi!
Thank for your videos! I need to shoot urban fotography for a real estate website... I would like a wide angle lens, but I see a lot aps-c lens on the market, could you suggest me one for full frame Sony?
Tysm ❤ u. Appreciate you reading comments
Most places I just use the 24-70mm f2.8 GM(mki and now mkii). I just pair it with the 15mm F2.0 laowa.
For my trip to japan and Philippines I may just get the sony 20-70mm F4. Single lenses travel. If I feel a prime portrait lenses is needed then the 55mm F1.8 as that small.
What about the Sony 24-70mm GM II
The two lenses that meet my needs are the Tamron 35-150 and the Tamron 20-40 2.8. these meet %95 of my needs when out on a shoot.
Same here.
I'm thinking to go with this 2 lens too
Its a great combo. I travel with these 2 all the time. The 20-40 is great for family shots, scenery, food and everyday use. The 35-150 is great when I go to the zoo, parks, places of interest and you need to zoom in. @@maximegatien5986
Just got the version 1 16-35mm for $1K and I absolutely love the lens! I agree with this video. I can do 99% of what I do with that combo alone
Had it for some months. It's too heavy and bulky. Apart from the qualities of this lens , I don't like that it is flare prone.
16-35 GM was my first choice of lens and it is fantastic!
I ate a month worth of noodles for this lens....lol jk
I ate a month worth of noodles for this lens....lol...jk
What is a good gymbal to use with the Sony A7 and the 16-35mm lens?
Awesome!!!
20-70/f4 and 35mm GM are the dynamic duo for me
I carry the FE 24-240mm or 36-360mm in APSC mode and the very old APS-C E 10-18mm (15-27mm) that in full frame is 12-18mm (18mm if you remove the light shield) f/4 OSS Soooo small and with treads for filters or stick with any one of the Sony 16-35mm.
What do you think of the Batis 85 mm with the 16-35 gm
If we are buying from Canada, we need to convert the price from USD into CAD right??
Curios why 16-35 and not 24-70? Do you find having that 16mm is super necessary over 24mm for travel photography?
Swapped my canon to sony 6700. Ques; why sony doesnt have the continuous auto focus when the photo timer is on? the AF-C wont work which i rely on 90% of the time as a solo content creator taking my own moving street photos using my tripod. Its only set on AF-A & results to me being blurred as the subject and the background is sharp when i do walking shots. Is this really sony's feature? How to fix this? Thanks a lot
I would rather choose Tamron 20-40, just because below 20mm the image just looks unnaturally distorted to me. :D
Great lens.
Could you please recommend for A6400?
For the zoom lens, when it goes from 16 to 35, does the 35 look less distorted on people's faces? Like at 35, is it identical to a 35 prime?
Why would it look any different? Look up how a optical zoom lens works :)
I'm planning to buy a sony camera this summer. If I I buy an a6700, I'll go with tamron 50-400mm and zeiss 55mm. But If I buy a full frame, let's say a7iv or used a9ii, I'll go with the same tamron lens but with zeiss 85mm
As a new photographer, what about aps-c lenses? For like sony a6700
Yeppp... After I have traveled to a lot of countries and tried at least 10 different lenses with my hybrid camera (Sony A7IV) I would say the 24-70 is just not it, kind of overrated, its good if you can bring only 1 lens (I own a Sigma 24-70), but I barely use it... if you can do 2 or maybe 3. I would say my go to is 16-35 f2.8 GM and Tamron 70-180 f2.8 so I cover a lot from wide to telephoto range. I also bring a prime, the 35 f1.4 GM for casual walk around or low light scenarios. If I know that I need an Astro lens I replace the 35 with the 20 f1.8 G, but the lighter is your backpack the better overall experience is.
I just started really getting into photography, I purchased the 35mm, 50mm and 85mm 1.8 from Sony. Do you think those were good selections? I do mostly street, portrait and nature photography
I heard that that people complain about 50mm, but 85 is brilliant and I am in the process of persuading myself that I do not need 35mm 1.8 so overall decent setup. Any specific reason why primes only instead zoom?
@@KsaweryKarwacki I like the quality of pictures I get from prime lenses. I have the kit zoom lens and it turned me off. I have the Sony Alpha 7IV, the zoom was 28-70MM 3.5 -5.6. The picture quality was not great, I also don't have the funds to purchase those expensive nice zoom lenses
Sony G 50 2.5 y Sony 85 1.8
My 85mm 1.8 has paid for itself multiple times as my headshot workhorse.
Great video. Just fyi brother Penultimate means “next to last.” I had the issue with one of my videos a few months ago.
Yes that’s true 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
How about sony 20-70 f4? Thanks
Confused. So which cameras have Super35 in 4K?
24-70 2.8 + 70-200 2.8 will cover most of anyone's needs. Throw in a fast and light 14 to 16mm prime and you're good to go at anything except birds and bugs.
Or if you really want the 16-35 instead, just pair that with a 50mm prime and the 70-200mm 2.8. APS-C mode is meh even with the A7 IV so I wouldn't count on that to get to 50mm with the 16-35. If you're not shooting indoors without flash or you don't really need the BOK-EH, grab f/4 versions of those zooms and save a ton in both cash and weight.
Which of the two in your opinion is the better option for wild life?
how about 20--40 f 2.8 with Samyang 75 mm f1.8 for ZVE1
so what is the ultimate combination?
The Sony 16-35 F4 PZ is a great price wise option!
Why would you want to use ‘super 35’ (APSC cropped) when you have clear image zoom anyway?
U can’t use ICZ with raw shots. Only with jpg.
Best all-round lenses for aps-c, suggest me one lenses full confusion in my mind 😢
my 2 would be the 16-35 GM and the tamron 35 -150mm
No overlap and full coverage :D
Agree. I second that.
I wish I had a nikon youtuber with your quality. Meanwhile im looking for alternatives for the Z mount and F mount if I don’t like the Z ones. 😂
How about a nice lense on a A6700? Does this camera really overheat?😮😮😮😮😮
I only use 2 lens for my street photos. 24-70 F4 & 50mm f1.8.
Noob question: what would be the difference between the Sony 16-35mm you recommend, and the Sony 16-50mm kit lens?
It’s the build quality and image quality! It has a constant aperture of 2.8 which will give you better bokeh when you start shooting more you will realise the auto focusing breathing in kit lenses is decent or just bad when compared to better quality lenses.
😂 I’m the complete opposite
Zoom is 24-70mm f2.8
Prime is 35mm f1.4
70mm at f2.8 has plenty of separation; and wide lenses need a wider aperture for same result, hence the f1.4 and for a low light lens, I’d prefer a 35mm 1.4 over an 85mm 1.4
zeiss 55 1.8 and sony FE 35mm 1.8
sold all my other lenses and kept these two
For me Sony 20mm G lens as my next purchase. No doubt Sony 16-35mm a more sensible option but for sharpness prefer prime lens. Plus cost gap?
My standard lens Voigtlander 35mm f2 on my Sony A7RIII
Sony 70-200mm GM II and 135mm GM 4LIFE!!
great video, I wonder what would be the only 2 lenses you would take if you did not have Full frame??? could you do an APS-C version???
My two lenses of choice: The Sigma 85mm 1.4 DG DN and the Sony 35mm 1.4 GM.
By adding a Sony 20mm 1.8 G it would be complete and good compromise between weight, speed and performance.
