That stepdad got exactly what he deserved. Homeless? His own fault, he should not have mistreated the person who OWNS the house he's living in. Jobless? His own fault, he should not have committed fraud, especially considering his profession (although I don't think he's worthy of being called professional).

If I were that first OP I'd have a restraining order filed against the step-dad and his son and move far away, people have killed for WAY less than that, no sense not being careful.

    • @magne7771

I couldn't agree with this more. I've seen people try & kill over literally nothing. _They_ bump _your_ shoulder, and before _you_ turn around they're already pulling out the shiv. People are freakin' dangerous, and anything can happen any time.
Smartest choice is always to be wary of others- especially once they've got _some_ kind of reason.

The OP for being so young handled it well. Calling the lawyer was best thing OP could have done. The stepfather using some of the money isn't surprising. The fact he had to pay it back was the best part.Since he owed OP so much he lost everything. Karma sometimes gets the bad guy.

  • @some_random_user_who_is_random

In the case of the second story...she literally paid 2x the price to have extra space for the comfort of herself and those around her. I'm glad the airline respected that. I've heard horror stories about airlines forcing people over a certain size to do that, but then giving the seat away to someone on standby anyway. So literally just charging a fat fee but not actually guaranteeing extra space.

Not the jerk. The kid would have chosen his family over money. I hope his grandparents taught him about scammers and how to handle money before they passed. Glad his lawyer handled this well. As far as the plane seating goes, if you paid for both seats then they are yours. We have all had some stranger lean way too far into us in a crowded space and it is awkward. Obviously buying the second seat was to prevent not just the awkwardness but also making someone feel self conscious and hurt their feelings. I thought the same. It was to much convenient he and his son stay, and hope OP will stay as well (mainly because if OP went and died in the accident the inheritance will go to a charity instead). SO they could pull this scheme knowing OP is still underage but 1 year away at the time when it happens, and they try to bullied their way into make them the sole owner of the inheritance too. Even the red flags was the moment the step father start to threat OP concerns as worrying to much and overreact. Is as if he knew what would happen too that day and prepare himself for all of this.

#1 - NTA. The OP didn't make the stepdad homeless, the stepdad did through his own actions. Also, as the guardian of a minor with both parents deceased he was likely collecting social security survivor's benefits on the OP.

Story 1: the OP is not a jerk, the step father was being so obvious in wanting the OP's inheritence. I don't how the step people's reaction was during the news of the death but I think the OP should get a full investigation into just to make sure the step father didn't arrange for that little "accident".
Story 2: not a jerk, The op payed for that seat. The flight attendant sided with the OP because she was a paying customer. Besides that couple would only be apart for a few hours, They be together with each other the whole time at where ever they are going.

This is why, when you purchase a second seat, you need to make sure to sit in the MIDDLE seat during boarding. Then "graciously" move to the "extra" window seat to give your aisle mate some more room. If someone asks to sit in the spare seat, just say "SURE!" And move back into the middle seat, patting the window seat obnoxiously.

My grandparents were just like his as well, had multiple millions. My dad has inherited most of the money, and he's in his 70's. He's getting married in 1 month, to his bitch of a gf 12 or 13 years younger than him, both their third marriage. Tg I have a sister to go through this hell with.

"Taking care of me" sounds like a major understatement. Sounds like the stepdad barely did the bare minimum by keeping OP housed and fed, but then negated some of those passive good person points by being an absolute jerk, majority favouring his bio-son instead of treating both of his children like his own, being emotionally and financially abusive. No, OP is not the jerk for giving the stepdad his well deserved comeuppance

That first story is exactly why the reading of a will should happen after it's finalized not after the person's death. This sort of "surprise, you're a millionaire" situation always brings out the worst in people. If those grandparents had made everyone aware of what was in the will after they wrote it, it's likely the stepdad would've shown his true colors to the mom and/or son before their death and taken steps to prevent his manipulating behavior from causing problems.

Just, why? The legal guardian cannot always be trusted to keep all of it, sometimes they screw the person over and get Away with it since the person inheriting the estate isn't 18 yet

(The whole value of everything he now owns.) well considering who you ask, obviously he was 17-18 in this story.

Since the Mother passed after the grandparents she would have inherited her share and her share passed per HER will. In most states the stepfather would have inherited from the Mother.

    • @MuantanamoMobile
      @MuantanamoMobile Pƙed rokem +4

Unlikely she had a will given that she barely had any assets. Also the grandparent's will had not passed probate before she passed on, so she didn't inherit anything. When a person dies, their property needs to be distributed to others in a process called probate which requires proof of death (death certificate) to be issued. By the time this occurred both the mum and the grandparents had died legally, leaving the son the sole heir as described in the will without the mum having been a party to it (since dead people can't inherit property).
Legally, Next of kin is usually defined as a person's closest living blood relative, someone who may have inheritance rights, and obligations, the son is closer to her in this regard than his step-father. When someone dies, their Next of Kin will typically be direct offspring: children, grandchildren, or great-grandchildren, this definition typically excludes spouses but most states allow a surviving spouse to be first in line to inherit your Estate, IF defined in the will.
