That was a really fun outing you shared with us. That saw is a money saver every time you mill your own lumber. You all did a great job out there. Stay safe and continue these fun outings where you all work together. Fred.

I grew up in north central Minnesota. My dad had a select cut hardwood logging business and we also ran a Wood Mizer LT40 ban mill. I loved running that mill and sawing for grade. The smell of the wood and the beautiful red and white oak, red elm and black ash boards coming off the mill were so nice to run your hands across and look at. The biggest challenge was having dirty logs and the band would start to dive down into the cut. I spent a lot of time sharpening bands and setting the teeth. After retirement I'd like to get a mill of my own and do some custom sawing just to keep busy doing something I enjoy. Thanks for sparking some old memories.

You're right it's a crime that they don't let your user own milled lumber in your houses I had two fortunes I got milled up at a mill got them plain and then snuck them in when I got the contractor to frame my shop I let the wood sit for a year before I used it the framer didn't like it because back then you had a hammer and nails and it kept bending his nails but the inspector didn't even notice that it was my own lumber and I tell you it was good lumber got a lot of lumber out of that hose trees lot left over after I built my shop

I’m beginning to think all you get at Lowes is culls . I go with my husband sometimes to get boards and even I can tell they aren’t great. Plus EXPENSIVE! I love the look of those boards. No substitute for workmanship. I also appreciate your respect for the natural resources. Big industry has no idea what that involves.

You may want to recheck. Some places will allow you to build a house out of rough cut lumber. There once was an old wives tale circulating that it was illegal in the entire US but that's not the case. It's dependent upon local building inspectors and code for your area.

You speak the truth. This country was built on rough sawn green lumber and now that the government has got involved it’s not worthy. It’s a lot of work to harvest and mill your own lumber but it’s so satisfying knowing you made that product. My only regret is not getting the bed extension when I ordered my mill, at the time I thought I wouldn’t need anything longer than 10 feet. Thanks for sharing

Alright Andy ! You were talking about stress in a tree and I bet that went right over some folk's head. Every time I cranked up my old mill I learned something I didn't know and I don't mind admitting it. THE very first tree that I ever sawed by myself(about 1989) I cut down an old wolf pine tree. The base log , I cut it 19.6 cause that's all the mill would cut. When I got that thing squared into a cant, it was 24 inches square and 19.6 long. I stood there and looked at it just a minute(that's a bid dadgum cant in today's world) I went and got me a bunch of wooden wedges and decided I would split that cant in half and shuck it all down to 1x12......don't ever do it that way..... anyhow, I started the cut and was putting wedges in the kerf just in case the top piece settled on the bottom ..... I ran out of wedges so I turned around to pull out the first ones I put in and there was a gap between the top and the bottom cants of about 10 inches.....I felt sick.... I just knew I had ruined the whole blasted log. I finished cutting it and you could have made rocking chair bottoms out of that tree for a 40 foot tall rocking chair. HAHAHAHa... I cleared the deck of the mill and set one of those rocking chair rockers up there and started cutting 1x12s. As I cut them the stress came out of the cant and EVERY piece straitened out and was as true as it could be .....That's 2 different kinds of LOG STRESS !! HAHAHAHA

Hey Andy I sure know what you mean about the cost of lumber. I was in a Home Depot this May and noticed a 4x8 sheet of 3/4 plywood and with the sales tax it was $ 104.00 here in northern Ontario Canada . I also have a sawmill. 👍👍👍

Here on Vancouver Island BC you can't even go to a mill and buy lumber from them because they ship it all away and then when the store number is from China or wherever it's all crappy wood so all the number one logs and lumber gets shipped out of the country and we get all the crap leftover after they process it now those shut down mostly all the mills here in BC is a great big barges with millions of logs on them going out of the country
