    MYP here.. we road trip quite a bit. I sure wish this would have been built for the Frunk instead of the basement...subtrunk. When enroute, we have all our luggage in the back...so it would suck to have to unload everything just to get a drink. In the frunk, that would be perfect. You can really only store a single rollaway and a few small items up there anyway, so that woulda been a much better place for this product. There are kits to bring power up to the frunk. I guess this product would be good for bringing food to the VRBO, so long as you don't need it until you actually arrive and unload everything. Good price though

    • @DirtyTesla

      I agree, but i think they went for the frunk because Y (most popular vehicle) has power right there so it's super convenient. On our last road trip, we had some essential stuff in the subtrunk, so I just arranged our luggage in a way that it was still easily accessible.

    I have an ICECO portable fridge that I use in my Tesla Model X and love it. While I think it’s cool that people are designing products like this specifically for Teslas there are a couple problems I see here. I am not convinced that the small gap left for air flow for the compressor is really sufficient and may result in overheating and reducing the life of the compressor. Also I personally want my fridge where I can easily get to it during a trip, without having to remove all my luggage, camping gear, or whatever is above it first. That’s why I pack stuff that I won’t need till I’m at my destination in the sub-trunk and put my ICECO on top where I can get to it anytime.

      @@BerraLilltrollI'm not sure that's true. The "heat" that's pumped needs to go somewhere. There's a reason the fridge in your house blows air from the bottom. If you put the original cover over the top aren't you just circulating air that gets hotter and hotter?

    • @TechTab00
      @TechTab00 Před 10 měsíci +3

      Correct on all counts! This company is also taking advantage and charging the Tesla owner tax. They do make good products however. I bought a 32 Q from them last year, EXCEPT it has wheels and a handle so you can roll it like luggage. Something also not mentioned is these things with their compressor, and other refrigerant machinery are HEAVY, plus load it up with drinks and it will be back breaking getting this thing out of the sub trunk.
      The other feature my unit has is a boss size Li-Ion battery, so I just charge it up in the house the night before and don't have to strain my car's voltage system at all while travelling. If the battery gets low, I can plug it in to the 12V charger, but I've never had that happen. It's a powerful battery pack. If you get it cool on AC in the house before leaving, it uses very little energy. I also store mine on top in the X, and put the luggage I don't have immediate use for underneath in the sub trunk, for the same reasons as @pjcornelius mentioned.
      Here's the punchline: I paid $409 and got the wheels/handle system, plus the Li-Ion battery. They want $500 for this model X specific one now with neither of those huge features. There's no way I would trade what I have now for what they are offering.

    Imagine how cool would it be if coolers / freezers would be compatible with Tesla's built-in heat management system (octavalve & so on). There would be no need for a compressor, just some connection to the coolant lines. I imagine something like this would be potentially possible only in the frunk thouhg (due to length of the coolant lines) and of course only if Tesla would decide to introduce such option... This would be so cool.

To be honest, right now I just use a small igloo cooler that can fit a 6-pack of cans. The ice lasts pretty long... at least until I get to the hotel's ice machine. If you use dry ice, it really does the trick.

    • @russellklegraefe6425
      @russellklegraefe6425 Před 10 měsíci +1

      Yes. This was my first thought. It would be handy to bring perishables on a road trip but not a place to store treats for the trip. Great for going camping too.
      I’m also not so sure about the ventilation once the car is full for that road trip. Sure the pads raise the lid but once suitcases and all the other travel items are on top, how will the air circulate?
      Does the power outlet in the back connect to the main battery pack or the 12V battery? It should be the 12V battery. I hope the cooler doesn’t kill the 12V battery without you knowing it. Also, that makes Chris’ test kind of a mute point, unless the main battery charges the 12V constantly.

You can then replace the inverter with anything you want as the efficiency improves. Hell, you could potentially use USB-C to 12 volt adapter, which will deliver up to 60 watts of power. Not sure how much power it uses, you should buy a 12 volt measuring tool for this kind of thing. Cheers

    If it has adequate ventilation it's a neat hack after the fact but my engineering spidey senses are not completely happy about it :)
    Also Tesla's should have mains outlets. It can be done at very little cost and can be so safe that you can short it without issue. 1000watt is only about 4 amps in europe and that can be done in the size of a pack of cards. then they could sell a super thin cook top, maybe a little Tesla branded coffee maker. And indeed a fridge. The sub trunk could have a couple of plugs so it can vent to the outside. Maybe a foretent with solar cells on top that can feed the car indefinitely at a remote location. a little star link flex. maybe a little kirk flip phone just to flex that there is connection anywhere on the planet. And we need umbrella holes in the car to flex on Rolls. The flip phone could also talk to the car once it has KITT conversational AI. Which we can wildly enough do today.
    Maybe a little Tesla desalination device so you can pick up ocean water and make it drinkable. Not that it makes sense but just to flex :) for when you are driving out of the sahara and get to the african coast of course. A UFO to come pick you up would be handy too. Especially if it's not earth. Where we are going we don't neeed..... roads.

      Usually these custom Tesla designed products are extra expensive, but the current prices are comparable to other non-custom coolers on the market. The full price you're paying a premium though.

    How much energy is required to keep this portable fridge and how much wasted energy is being dissipated in heat in a given 24 hour period?

      I'm going to make a giant estimation here, but let's say it used 0.3% of my battery in 1.5 hours. That would be about 4.8% in 24 hours, or ~3.9kWh/24 hours. That's ~160 watts, so it seems likely. And if you were to keep this thing full of cold stuff, it would probably run much less. Keep in mind it was not pre-cooled when I started the test, so I'd assume slightly less energy use per 24 hours.

      @@DirtyTesla so I guess it draws about 3kW per day (pretty much same as sentry). Keep me informed how much heat rejection is blowing out of its fancoil.

      @@michelmasse6225 I didn't feel any noticable heat but it was also pretty warm outside, like 85F at the time.

    The fridge is running off of the 12-volt battery not the high voltage pack.

      Sure, but while car is in camp mode, the high voltage battery contacts are engaged so the high voltage to 12V DC-to-DC converter is on, keeping the 12V battery (actually 15V in newer Ys) topped up.
      Effectively it's the high voltage battery that's providing the power to the fridge since the low voltage battery remains topped up.
