Bonifacio, a picturesque town in the south of the French island of Corsica, offers a fascinating mix of history, nature and breathtaking scenery. This charming town is named after Boniface II, the Marquis of Tuscany, and was founded in the 9th century. It has experienced a turbulent history over the centuries, ranging from pirate attacks to sieges.
One of Bonifacio's most spectacular sights is its old town perched on a limestone cliff. The city walls and medieval buildings seem to grow directly out of the cliffs and offer an impressive view of the turquoise Mediterranean. A stroll through the narrow, cobbled streets of the old town feels like a trip back in time, with numerous historic buildings, small cafés and boutiques.
Another highlight is the Staircase of the King of Aragon, which, according to legend, was carved into the steep cliff by the king's soldiers in a single night. These 187 steps lead down to the sea and offer spectacular views and photo opportunities.
Bonifacio is also known for its natural wonders. The sea cliffs around the town are a paradise for hikers and photographers. The nearby Lavezzi Islands, a protected marine nature reserve, are a popular destination for boat trips, snorkeling and diving. This group of islands is known for its crystal-clear waters and diverse underwater world.
The citadel of Bonifacio is another sight that visitors should not miss. This mighty fortress, perched on the cliffs, offers an impressive view of the sea and the surrounding landscape. Inside the citadel is the Bastion de l'Étendard, a museum that tells the story of the town and its defenses.
Bonifacio is not only a historical gem, but also a lively harbor town. The natural harbor, surrounded by high cliffs, attracts sailors from all over the world. Here, visitors can enjoy fresh seafood in one of the many restaurants and bars along the waterfront and watch the hustle and bustle.
