Chrollo wasn't fighting to kill Zeno, he noted that himself. He said "I couldn't steal their powers", which suggest he was fighting with the sole purpose to do that. In addition, he was aware that it was a matter of time for the fight to end since he hired Illumi to kill the Ten Dons.
And in the dialogue between Zeno and Chrollo, Zeno knew Chrollo wasn't fighting to kill, thats why he said in the end "Unless you decided to actually try to kill me".
Thus Zeno is not sure that he will win if they where to fight to death.

yea that was what I was thinking cause he used one of the chains to heal himself. Another for the heart contract, and one that blocked the bullets in the mansion before he gets hired to be the bodyguard

To be fair, chain jail is the only chain so far that would really need to be restricted like that anyway. The others he uses either on himself, or to stop projectiles, or just arbitrarily like over the map to find Neon and stuff. They don't have to breach a rule about who it's used on if you're not using it on a person in the first place.

Absolutely. Texture Surprise gave him the opportunity, but Hisoka still had to be smart enough to quickly think of replacement verses, and to be skilled enough to discreetly make the change unnoticed.

Right, so Hisoka has two Nen abilities: Bungee Gum and Texture Surprise. He regularly uses Texture Surprise to change the appearance and texture of objects, such as with his tattoo (which was, like, a towel or something similar) and the couple of tissues that hid the scars left by Machi's healing after his fight against the guy in Heaven's Arena. He used that to change the prophecy.
when chrollo actually decides to kill someone in advance, he has a whole book of abilities to mix and match in a way that the fight would probably end looking like a curb stomp.
I take it as Chrollo winning if he planned the fight beforehand (as one fight in manga that I wont spoil). But if he was unprepared he would loose to Zeno. But that is my opinion.
@@Orochi8Strange not really. in a spontaneous fight as long as chrollo also fights to kill, zeno can actually lose, which he basically said. zeno's advantage is experience, but as silva noted, chrollo has all the unknown natural potential in his side (who knows what other stuff is in the book or how he would use them if he was fighting to kill), which is more dangerous.

It's already in the past - he was pleased to learn Uvo's specifically because if his Chain Jail could hold the physically strongest Troupe member, it could hold any of them. It's got nothing to do with Uvo coming back (which he's not - the 'moon rising' was referring to him ascending to whatever afterlife they have).
What Zeno meant was that Chrollo would win if he actually tried to kill him, because in this fight, Chrollo was trying to capture Zeno. That’s why he was using the Owl shadow beast’s ability. He wanted to capture Zeno in order to steal his ability. That’s also why Chrollo ended up putting it away, because he realized he wouldn’t be able to in a 2v1.
Sigh that’s not what he meant, this debate has been going on long enough for years.
Zeno said he MOST LIKELY wins unless Chrollo was seriously trying to kill him, which would be more difficult to predict, so:
Scenario 1: maybe 90% chance Zeno wins if Chrollo fights trying to steal his abilities.
Scenario 2: closer to a 50/50 if Chrollo was fighting to the death.
Personally, i'd bet on Zeno given how much Chrollo had to prepare for his latest fight in the manga, but we'll probably never know. And i think Silva clears.
It amazes me how many times Ange gets something the anime is trying to convey backwards!! its actually a gag at this point lmao
it just means that in general sense Zeno is stronger (at least that what Zeno thinks). But strong desire to kill Zeno can power up Chrollo and make the fight difficult to predict. Just like hatred power up Kurapika against the Spider

also not in the anime but one of the conditions for chrollo to steal and KEEP the ability is the owner being alive. so the moment he felt like he wanted to steal zoldyck's abilities besides stalling time for illumi, he already cant fight to kill them.
The way I interpreted Zeno's sentence is that Zeno himself would very likely win in a 1v1, but might lose if Chrollo wasnt just trying to steal his ability and instead fought to kill, since him stealing abilities requires some difficult conditions to be met.
You know, that just makes me hate Chrollo even more. The fact Togashi made the super powerful lider of the spiders a handsome super cool skillful young man, just makes me be like "F*CK HIM! He's a murderer!!! don't be fooled by his beautifull eyes you stupid people he's a serial killer! Stop liking him!" People tend to get it very confused. Zeno is a cautious fighter, what he meant by that is literally what everyone says about Nen battle. And chrollo epitomizes the statements perfectly “ in a Nen battle you can’t really be certain who would win”
Zenos answer was meant to be vague to us the audience because he’s was imply chrollo ability is to steal Nen and he doesn’t know what he has stolen and he knew what chrollo was trying to do.

Chrollo, by definition, can have ANY Nen ability in his possession at a given time. That means if he is serious about killing you, you can't be sure what that next ability is going to do.
Strength means nothing when we talk about surviving Chrollo.He can fight Meruem and if he has, say Knov or Shalnark's or Illumi's ability, he would win. Zeno understands this, and acknowledges that.

Kuroro was fighting in defensive mode... He would end killed. Basically, Zeno said that if Kororo fights him to kill, the history could be different. It's a 50/50 battle.

Probably somebody clarified already but just in case: Chrollo wasn't trying to Kill Zeno nor Silva, because he wants their nen abilities. So he was trying to fullfill the conditions to steal them while they fought. But the assassins WERE trying to kill Chrollo

16:23 The thing with the fortunes and why they made so much money is that you can act to avoid the outcome, and sometimes it tells you straight up how.
So the fortune is 100% correct, but it's not inevitable. Think of the mafia guy. He knew he was gonna survive as long as he didn't go down any stairs. So if he went down stairs, he might not have survived like his fortune said.
So the fortunes can also be seen as a "What would have happened if people didn't get the fortune and act differently because of it".
Inorder for chrollo to use a stollen ability the user of said ability needs to be alive so if neon died chrollo wouldnt be able to use lovely ghost writer

The way i took the Zeno Chrollo talk was if Chrollo tries to take Zeno's power, Zeno woukd win, but if Chrollo was just fighting to kill, Chrollo would win.

@@lucylucian2564 with the amount of different nen powers in this world there are bound to be hard-counters. Chrollo already proved that in the manga that if he gets prep time he very likely wins vs anyone who is not leagues above him.
Chrollo's priority in this fight is faking mafia that the whole troop is dead, plus stealing nen from Zeno and Silva. But his intention was exposed during the fight and triggered that interesting convo.
Zeno's thought would be like " You cheeky brat can never still my power but need to watch out if Chrollo changes his mind or his plan went south."
Kurapika can use every single ability on everyone who isn't a spider except chain jail, it is only that one ability he cant use on non spiders

He's pleased to learn the 11th moon's secret refers to Uvo's ability, that's before their fight. Remember when Kurapika said, "i'll be here same time, same place" to Hisoka. They did meet again offscreen before his fight with Uvo. That's the time Hisoka sold the calendar's secret (troupe member's abilities, well just the two of them). It doesn't mean that Uvo knows some secret about resurrection. Uvo is dead and didn't have the ability to resurrect.
5:19 Just to clarify: Zeno is saying that as long as Chrollo isn't fighting to kill, Zeno would probably win. The entire time, Chrollo was trying to steal Zeno's ability, and Zeno could tell.
Zeno is saying that if Chrollo fought just to kill him and not to steal his ability, the outcome would be more uncertain.
Zeno does fight to kill. That's his profession. But Zeno only wants to kill for that profession, he doesn't kill for fun. So the second fighting Chrollo wasn't work anymore (since the contract was void because Illumi killed the Ten Dons), the Zoldycks stopped fighting him. Essentially, some people kill whenever. Some people kill for fun. But Zeno only kills for the job. He doesn't care about killing someone he's not hired to kill. That's essentially his work ethic.
So Chrollo hired Illumi to kill the Ten Dons. Because if he could survive long enough, them dying would mean the Zoldycks would stop pursuing him.
5:59 Good perception from Ange there! Yes, iirc, the target has to be alive for Chrollo to steal and keep using the stolen ability. So all the people in his conjured book aka the former users of stolen abilities are still alive - which means the Troupe didn't kill the owl, and which is the reason for Chrollo to say not to touch the ambulance.
It adds exactly the type of layer of difficulty to the ability required to make it stronger/work in first place. Because remember, the more restrictive the condition, the more it can enable!

Chrollo's goal was to stall for time for Illumi to kill the dons, hence he wasn't fighting seriously trying to kill his opponent, that's what Zeno meant. On the other hand I don't know where Ange has misunderstood, but the Zoldyc are a family of paid killers, of course they fight to kill, Zeno included.
Kurapika's line to the mafia dude lose a bit of nuance in translation, what is says is closer to "I'm in the mood to kill anyone, even if it's you".
Also he wanted to steal they abilities. Thats why he was using the Owl ability. To capture them.

The reason why Zeno said Chrollo could kill him despite him being the strongest between them is because of Chollo's Hatsu i.e. Nen Ability Collection. Since he has multiple tricks up his sleeve and you'll have to be ready to overcome those. Chrollo is a Specialist (opposite of enhanceme) and yet he is able to stand his ground in a 2v1 against the Master Nen Users, that speaks about his experience & aura quantity.
I've always assumed it meant. In a spare Zeno would win. But in a fight to the death Chrollo would win.

Hisoka is slick af he made the troupe stay in Yorknew city even though they were leaving for meteor city .. Because the second half of the fortune he created with texture surprise basically says something bad will happen to them if they go back to meteor city . Chrollo is also smart af the way he deduced the fortune of hisoka even is it was fake was soo on point that it makes Hisoka Power moan 😂 as usual .

Chrollo wasn't trying to kill them. His main purpose was to buy time, and steal their nen abilities if possible. Did you remember he used poison knife? That was paralytic poison not deadly poison. And Chrollo also used Owl's nen ability. Paralytic poison and Owl's mantle were perfect for capturing his opponents without killing.
Chrollo was straight trying to Steal their abilities killing them was his priority ... Thats why Zeno says if Chrollo was actually trying to kill him it's could've been a different story

The 1999 version of this arc is a masterpiece for me. Darker in terms of tone and overall animation, and the sound of nen activation is really cool
I had the dvds with the whole 1999 version except for the ova's and between the final part of the fourth exam, where Gon helps Kurapika and Leorio and right before the Heavens arena arc started. I rewatched this arc sooo many times, it was my first experience with anime and I love it so much to this day.

the Chrollo question to Zeno and Zeno's answer was as basic as it sounds. Zeno said he would win... unless (and heres the main part) he actually tried to kill them. so basically Chrollo wasnt even trying to kill them whereas the Zoldicks were trying to kill him.
This was down to him knowing that they wouldn't continue to fight once Illumi had done what he hired him to do. so all Chrollo had to do was stall

hes not saying anything about strength, which is variable in a nen battle. he just said "i would win most likely unless you actually fought to kill." meaning with that handicap obviously zeno would win because as an assassin he fights to kill. that's why he called chrollo cheeky because it was cheeky question.

The next chapter will explain everything about Hizoka's fortune. But I can say that the fortunes don't change since they are written by Chrollo/Neons power, so Hizoka used his gum to save himself

Chrollo wasn't holding back, but there are 4 conditions must be met before he can successfully steal Zeno's Nen.
1. He must witness the Nen ability in action with his own eyes.
2. He must ask about the ability and be answered by the victim.
3. His victims palm must touch the handprint on the cover of Bandit's Secret.
4. All of the above must be completed within an hour.
From all of these above, if we think carefully, he already met 1st and 4th condition automatically (because the fight wasn't took so long). So, he cannot paralyzed Zeno and Silva by the poison, but what he trying until the end is to have a conversation with Zeno, provokes him to speak more in case of Zeno might be too talkative, wanna be showing off and speaking out loud about his Nen. If that happens, what Chrollo has left to do is bring the handprint and force Zeno to touch in a very fast motion, then Zeno will lost his Nen suddenly.
But Zeno is too smart, he knew that Nen's condition for something like this could be anything, so he managed to keep his mouth shut and implied that he knew so well that even then, Chrollo still trying to trick him to steal his ability. That's why Zeno said that Chrollo was a cheeky kid, and Chrollo felt a bit sad that he couldn't steal Zeno's ability in the end just because Zeno was outsmarted him completely.

Zeno saying "unless you actually tried to kill me" is very OBVIOUSLY saying that chrollo wasn't trying to kill him, he was trying to steal his Nen ability and prolonging the fight because he knew illumi was going to kill the ten dons, so if that scenario kept on going for longer Zeno said that he would win...unless chrollo decided to actually try to kill him (the two ability that he used were the poisoned knife and the cloack which are to paralyze his adversary so he can steal their powers, not to kill them, he didn't use any offensive ability)
All Hatsus are built on default conditions. But you should stay away from making conscious condition because it hinders on your growth.
It's very funny because usually it's people who powerscale who read too much into things but for once it's you who are reading too much into what Zeno is saying. Zeno is literally just doing basic powerscaling. He's not reading deep things into Chrollo's psyche or anything, he's just saying "if you fight to steal our techniques, you're fighting at a disadvantage so I most likely win. If you fight normally, to kill, then it's different".
Zeno is definitely stronger in term of aura and most likely physical strength but he's not necessarily stronger overall. Having access to dozens or maybe hundreds of haxx abilities is insanely OP on Chrollo's part. What Zeno is saying is that he is pretty certain he'd win if Chrollo was just trying to steal his abilities because that limits his options too much when Chrollo's strength is specifically that he has all those options to work with. So basically when trying to capture Zeno, Chrollo is throwing away his only advantage hence why Zeno is pretty sure he'd win under those conditions. But if Chrollo was trying to kill Zeno, then he could use every tool at his disposal and Zeno has no way to know which and how many tools he has so he can't predict the outcome anymore.
The fact that Zeno can't predict the outcome because of so many unknown abilities is the entire reason the Zoldyck adopted that strategy in the first place: Have Zeno get close after an attack and restrain Chrollo's hands so that he can't use any unknown ability, and have Silva bombard them both from orbit. It's the only way to be sure xD
"it means the person can't use it?" Well yes, they talked about Chrollo "stealing" abilities, not "copying" them. So obviously if the ability is stolen, the original user can't use it.
"but how strong is his nen without that condition" pretty strong, especially for a beginner. Kurapika is very very talented too and he's basically been working non stop for 6 months. Even without conditions, he's much more advanced than Gon and Killua because they worked on the basics and took a 2 months break. He also know many advanced techniques since he trained to be operational in 6 months while Wing trained Killua and Gon to grow their potential on the long term so the only advanced technique he taught them is Gyo in the eyes.
That being said, without the conditions (so basically without emperor time too since that's also conditional), without chain jail and judgement chain (since both of those have conditions, or at least without them being boosted by conditions), he's nowhere near strong enough to take on a phantom troupe fighter. Remember that even with his enhancement boosted to 100% by the condition of having his eyes red, Uvo broke his arm in one punch. WIthout that condition, Uvo would have crushed his entire body in one punch and chain jail wouldn't have been strong enough to restrain him.
"can they change it?" Yeah, the prophecies would be usleess otherwise They come with a warning and if you heed the warning you can avoid the undesirable outcome. That's why the mafia guys are willing to pay so much for them. They're "100%" accurate in the sense that they're conditional prophecies.
