  • What are wind back calipers?
Luckily our commenter Stefano tipped us off .....
It's to do with the handbrake, as the pads wear and the handbrake applied, it winds the piston out to take up the gap caused by the pads wearing.
The best way is to get yourself a cheap wind back tool kit - it makes life a lot easier (fiddly at the best of times) for rotating the piston back into the caliper to enable proper fit for new brake pads.
These are used on many Japanese and European models.

    Morning Nath...
Great informative & interesting video as always.
Those calipers on Paddy were actually nice & clean.
I've got a couple of the caliper wind back kits, (y 2 I've no idea) (if my memory serves me right & I'm old so it's shit, Peugeot & Vauxhall amongst others, av the pistons with the holes in to fit the wind back tool) plus I've a ratcheting wind back tool for wen they just need to be pushed back, which is so much less faffing about than getting the kit out all the time.
4 x4 is coming along nicely, it'll soon be on the channel up in them there hill & dirt tracks of Portugal.
I removed the OEM discs & pads on my L200 & replaced with BREMBO grooved & drilled discs plus BREMBO pads too. Always liked a BREMBO brake item.
I'm guess in you filmed this whilst Dad's gammy knee was playing him up?

    • @stefanobio7045
      @stefanobio7045 Před 2 lety

Hi Jon and Nath.....another well made and informative video thanks for posting.
Nath is a very good presenter and its a pleasure watching, he explains everything very clearly.
Just for future reference.... Nath should had removed, cleaned and lubricated the caliper slide bolts using silicone grease, the slider pins are the ones with the rubber ends to prevent water, dirt ingress, do NOT use copper grease as this will cause the rubbers to deteriorate......if you do not lubricate the slide pins then eventually the pad carrier will not move laterally and can cause uneven pad wear and later problems etc.....
In relation to the rear brakes the cap head Allen bolts are generally high tensile hence why they are installed, the best way is to use a small mechanics pick to clean the inside first, this will remove the mud and dirt and then the Allen key / socket will fit correctly, to prevent rounding off the Allen key needs to be at the very bottom of the hole.
To prevent damage to the ABS brake pump by forcing brake fluid backwards through the pump would be to use a rubber brake pipe clamp, place the clamp as near as possible to the carrier and tighten down on the rubber pipe, then place a rubber tube onto the bleed nipple of the caliper, the other end can go into a clean jar with some brake fluid in the bottom, or you can use the easy bleed or 1 person type valves, i believe for your Panda 4x4 its the DOT 4 specification brake fluid?
Lift the bonnet up and unscrew the brake master cylinder filler cap.
Then open the bleed nipple, now you can wind back the piston, as the rubber brake pipe is clamped and the bleed nipple is open you will not force brake fluid back through the ABS pump which is an expensive item if its damaged!
Once the piston is fully wound back, the bleed nipple can be re-tightened, once the new brake pads and discs have been installed then the clamp can be removed.
Once all the discs and pads have been changed check the brake fluid level inside the master cylinder.
Its a good idea to check the brake fluid for water contamination whilst you are servicing the brakes as brake fluid is hydroscorbic, it absorbs water, the fluid testers are about £10 - £15 so not expensive, if the test indicates water then all the brake fluid in the system will need to be replaced.
Before replacing the wheel locater pins apply a small amount of copper or ceramic grease to the threads to prevent seizure, also do the same on the inside of the wheels where they attach to the hubs, also apply some copper grease to the wheel nuts but remember this will effect the torque setting significantly so the nuts should be done by hand, i suggest using the wheel brace thats supplied with the car to prevent over tightening, do not use an air tool or long breaker bar.
A VERY important safety feature that Nath did not demonstrate is that once all the pads and discs have been changed and checks made to ensure the rubber brake pipe clamps have been removed, then sit in the car and pump the brake pedal several times, this will ensure the pistons are extended and the pads are at thier maximum travel against the discs, it will also cause the carriers to centralise, as the slider pins will have been lubricated.
I have known when brake pads and discs have been changed, the brake pedal not pumped before driving away, only for the owner to discover the brake pedal goes to the floor....a little bit disconcerting.......also check the dash to ensure that no brake warning lights have been activated which would indicate a potential problem......
I hope your knee is improving Jon?
Best regards to you both, take care, Stefano........

    • @DrivenMadShow
      @DrivenMadShow  Před 2 lety +1

Morning Stefano - thank you for all that input - really useful & helpful stuff.
Think we may do a full rebuild of the brakes - due to my powder coat obsession - but I dismantled the sandblaster before my latest twist of the knee, so might be a while 😭 thats why we did not go the full hog this time around.
In many ways, youtube is a pain, you get many (and we fall smack into this) poor tutorials that are performed by untrained people (to be fair some are excellent, had a customer who was into lasers for work, but could strip a car to component level blindfolded and return to better than new with total OCD - no formal training, not on youtube I must add, was one of the cleverest / organised blokes I have ever met as an aside)
The channel we do is Nathan's thing, I have a car obsession, but always been fortunate enough to pay (or my employer paid 🤣) a main dealer to service & repair them - I was the odd bod who even took old cars to main dealers - our mancave was just for our own fun, and somehow is now filmed - I always fancied myself as more of a Jeremy Clarkson, talking, not doing, Nath is totally the opposite, loves getting dirty and fixing things.
When Nath had the idea to film, the first were reviews of other youtube programs we (mainly I watched) focused on cars or motorbikes, that failed because I talk too much ! and Nath was really not interested.
The Portuguese only fix what is broken, preventative is not considered here and that's me to a tee ! - they are also slapdash in every conceivable way and frankly Nath and I agreed, we could not be worse - so after trying main dealers / back street mechanics etc, the mancave grew to what you see now.
I kid you not, one garage takes your oil out, if its OK, puts it in the next customers car ? presumably with no consideration to grade ?
Once we bought Murdock (the L200) off road became something we enjoyed, so added that in - plus the truck was in need of a lot of attention so we decided to film us attempting it - great satisfaction achieved in doing something on our own (mainly Nath I must admit).
The knee is proving a major issue - MRI done, results next week, convinced it is the ligament, possibly now totally torn as I literally have done nothing for a month and its no better - so desperate someone to stick a knife in and fix it.
Thanks again for taking so much effort to help us !
      Have a great weekend
      KR J&N

@@DrivenMadShow Hi Jon and Nath....im glad my advice was helpful and i enjoy watching the videos being filmed in the man cave, i wish i had a large workshop similar to yours especially with a ramp as it makes life FAR easier, i have a single garage with power and lights so its ok to work on the front or rear of the cars but not on the sides as the garage is old and narrow, so its outside using axle stands.
Lol about re-using the old engine oil im sure the engines do not last too long in Portugal under those circumstances?
When you next have the 2021 Panda up on the ramps again have a look at the rear brake set up, you will see the 4 torx bolts on the rear of the hub that have to removed to access the 2 brake carrier bolts, why Fiat designed this i have no idea, your other older Panda 4x4 is much easier to service in that respect.
Thats good news about the 4 years of servicing and MOT, peace of mind.
I hope they can do something to improve your knee, i understand from previous experience how painful and debilitating that can be.
Enjoy the sun perhaps with a glass or two of a good portugese wine, best regards to you and Nath, Stefano.

Hi Jon and Nath.....have you checked the rear brake arrangement yet on your new 2021 Cross?
You will have some fun changing the rear brake discs as the 2 carrier bolts are not easily accessibile.
The 4 torx bolts that hold the hub into position need to be removed so that the hub can be rotated.
If you look you should find a cut out on one side of the hub, this is so once the 4 torx bolts have been removed you can then rotate the hub to access the 2 carrier bolts, its an awkward job.......why the Fiat Engineers changed it to this design i have no idea? Best regards to you both, take care, Stefano......
