Tile Slim teardown and battery replacement

- My battery died on my Tile Slim (2016 version) so I decided to make a video showing the inside of it and the replaced battery.
The battery I used is here: amzn.to/3A0ZS97
The Tile Slim I took apart: amzn.to/3C1BpBc
I was surprised to find it for only $15 after making this video. Had I know I could replace it for $15 I'm not sure I would have taken the time to replace the battery but hopefully, you found it interesting.
2020 version of the Tile Slim: amzn.to/3tDMkhK - Věda a technologie
This device is still working strong. The signal strength and audio output from the little speaker worked really well. I used it today to find my wallet buried inside my wife's car.
How about now that it's been 2 years
Honestly, big ups to Tile in this design for not making it self destruct once it loses battery connectivity like some companies do for their planned obsolescence.
They had a software Killswitch on the old tiles. Was absolutely ridiculous back then. I tested the battery using a multimeter and it was 95% full but software said it was dead lol
@@VincentAnzalone that sounds like something a communist would do
I'm going to do this, but I don't care about putting it back together. I'll just replace the battery and sandwich it between two pieces of duct tape. Make it thinner and more flexible, better for a wallet.
But if you don't at least attach the speaker side, it won't ring for you to locate stuff.
So how did it go, is it still working
3D printed case for perhaps??
Great video, thanks!
For anyone interested, the replace battery thing is like a maintenance minder on a car. You can tell the app you replaced the battery and that prompt will go away
Didn't know that 😮
Unfortunately that only applies for Tiles that allow for a replaceable battery. I can dismiss the prompt on my bigger tiles but the wallet one I can't. Oh well.
This makes for a good project. Add a 12 to 3 v step down converter to the car and find a way to wire the speaker to the car horn 🤔
an opto coupler might work for the horn adapter,,, but it could get pretty annoying.
much appreciated!
The CR2032 battery is 210 mAh. So 27% increase in battery life. Maybe try to forget the tile in the app and reconnect.
Don't delete the tile... When you try reconnect, the app says 'This tile is associated to another account'.
Very cool. Useful.
I tried using 3 CR1616 batteries with tabs in parallel... fit perfectly. .. but it still showed low battery and didn't show the slim being near by. I tried the option for "I have a new tile" but when I try to pair it, the app says this tile is associated to another account. I guess you'd have to replace the battery BEFORE it gets low enought to trigger the low voltage notification. :(
There is a theory that the Tiles don't measure battery voltage, but simply trip the low battery based on time. For the tiles that take only the CR2032, it's 1 year. My guess is the slim has a three year timer?
Very cool !
Thanks for the video. Could you please share where you found the CR 2032 battery with the tabs? Thanks

You should make a video of how it looks after you put it back together. I'm contemplating getting one if these but I hesitate because of the non replaceable/rechargeable battery.
The newer version I think has a bigger battery the overall size of it is larger. I think the link to the new ones in the description. The old one is so cheap even if you throw it away after the battery goes dead it's still a decent deal.

The 2032 batteries are too thick to make a good replacement, the case will not close and then the contacts will not easily touch the speaker and the speaker won't work. The part number for the original slim factory battery is "CP124920" which is a 3.0v 160mAH non-rechargeable battery. The part number is cp124920 because the dimensions are 1.2mm x 49mm x 20mm, that's how the naming convention works. It's a common battery but no one sells it individually, only in mass quantities to factories. "flat" or "ultra thin" seem to be the keywords. There might be products that contain this battery that cost not much more than the battery itself.

Definitely useful
You are also saving the landfill from e-waste (other than the battery). Pretty dumb tile doesn't make this easy to replace, especially since the battery never lasts the 3 years they say it does.
I have the later version and the battery just died. More or less the same but different battery. I consider replace the battery too and print a new case
My original battery had 380mAh
It seems like tile doesn't want people to get their products anymore. Even apple, a company that's infamous for screwing it's customers over, makes they trackers battery replaceable. 🤦♂️
On the ones with replaceable batteries, you still have to go into the app and reset the low battery alarm manually. Maybe that option exists for these as well?
It wasn't an option for me but it still works. You just always have the low battery warning.
Would this work without soldering do you think?
If you find a way to keep the leads firmly connected to the battery it might be possible.
I don't think it would. It probably won't stay put.
Maybe filling it with silicone would help keep it all steady after it dries up, which you would have to wait, only to open it up to create some space on the corners to add not-too-strong-but-not-school-glue. But you gotta make sure the contacts are pushing themselves. U may also need a c clamp or something while u wait for the glue and silicone
Cheap quality and design. When I heard about glue I was wtf ?😂
what year tile is it?
Not sure but the tile was at least a year old when I did the battery replacement. So it has to be at least 2019 to 2021.
Those flat batteries can be recharged
It would be nice if these had a Q1 inductive charging coil in them. !!!!!
This thing is intended to be nearly as thin as 2 credit cards so it would be impressive if they found the room for the charging coil and addition curcits needed to charge the battery.
The original cell is a lipo battery and actually rechargeable
Another cool experiment would be to try to cut two squares in the plastic so that charger leads could connect to the liPo. Then someone could occasionally charge it keeping it from ever getting to the point where the app would flag a battery warning.
This battery is NOT rechargeable.
Could you recharge the original
No I tried* it has a non chargable/ once use chemistry
I replaced my slim battery with 3 CR1616 batteries with tabs in parallel. The tile works now, but the app still showed the battery low, so I thought I would delete it and re-connect.... BAD MOVE :( the app now says this tile is associated with another account.
That sounds strange maybe customer support could help. I wouldn't mention the battery replacement. You should be able to remove and add it back.
I just recharge the battery that was in there
and that worked?
@@ChrisDembinsky nope, looked like a lithium battery.... I just took one of my broken vape pens, busted the battery out (3.7 V 1S )
@@ChrisDembinsky right away yeah, it worked.... i just soldered a 3.7v lipo battery into the + and - terminals (which are indicated on the battery you will be cutting out and throwing away)
LOL This was almost a helpful video but it actually didn't finish with the battery replacement so I don't know what the point was
Maybe watch it again if you missed the point. It wasn't a how-to video. It was an explanation of what I did to replace the battery and how it worked after replacing it. The original battery was the putch battery and it was replaced with the button battery, yellow ring. To replace it you just desolder one battery and solder in the new one. This was post so that others that are thinking about doing it understand what they are getting into with out actually cutting their device open.
