My Mini Cooper Upgrades: Making A Mini Cooper Faster

  • These are the power and performance upgrades I have on my Mini Cooper. The bigger turbo, bigger exhaust, cat, muffler, bigger air filter, front mount intercooler, and the removal of a lot of the things that give a quieter ride makes the car go faster. Better tires and rims help put the power to the road. Inside a better stereo keeps the engine droan from being noticed at the few speed where she had a bit of droan.
    The Garrett GT28RS turbo does make a LOT of boost, more than I could handle, but I'd rather be tuning for what she can handle rather than longing for more. I also have an Alta / Cobb Accessport for tweaking the ECU to deal with the extra air.

    Forget the bolt on for a second. First things first. You need a colder spark plug. NGK Iridium / I forget the model number. You will burn them fast without it. The Mini burns them fast if you have an S or JCW stock. The stock Mini 100k easy. The S and JCW I've pulled burned plugs before 40k. They say 60k I laugh. Depends on how you drive. It's kind of like their original 15k oil change they changed it to 10k when they realized the car wasn't going to do it. Go 7.5 tops. Next thing, would be bolt ons and remember the stock internals like rods and pistons will only go so far without an engine rebuild etc. So ask yourself how far do you want to go. Last thing the Tune to bring it all together. These cars aren't 1970s Chevelles. They are computer controlled and regulated. Personally I'd get the colder plugs maybe a high flow panel filter and then get the Maniac Tune. You won't need to spend a ton. And you will get power. Cheaper than the JCW upgrade if you have an S and itll bring more power than a JCW. Mini held back a lot. For good reason. But out of the box the car is capable of more power.
    Have a plan. Things don't work well if you don't. If you want to spend 1k then include a tune and get some colder plugs. if you want to go 1500. Then add the exhaust and tune it afterwards. If your going 10k then, well you get the drill. The tune should be the last thing to support the mods. But the tune is key. If you don't want to spend a lot then stock the Tune will make more power than a JCW if you have an S vice versa.
    Finally, do not mess with the recirculation valve. Adding a blow off valve or stiffer spring on these cars is a performance decrease unless the car is heavily modified like the guy in the video. The recirculation valve is faster and more economical. Also a bigger turbo will not bring boost without a tune. At least not much. Boost is controlled by the computer once again which involves tuning. Secondly, depending on the turbo you select you are more likely to have issues with out a complete remap.
    For those who just want a quick bang. Get a simple Maniac Tune without aftermarket Mods and the colder plug. Trust me. It'll fly.
    For those that have an S who'd like to see the performance of a JCW. This is not a difficult task. Part numbers may change in Minis Inventory. The car may look and sound different. But in reality it's 99% Tuning. Mini will charge 2k to flash or tune your S so it runs like a JCW and give u a few badges and maybe an exhaust for it. But they do change it to a JCW via the vin. The JCW is primarily suspension and handling. So a S in a straight line with tuning can keep up or out run a JCW. Put it on the track its out the door. JCW will win. It's the same car, minor difference with a more emphasis on handling.

      Kristopher Sullivan You seem very knowledgeable about the Mini. are you on any forums. I have a 2010 MCS and I'm looking to get a bit more out of it. So far I've replaced the air filter to a high flow aftermarket but not too sure what I want to do next. Budget is about $2000. The only problem is I live in Australia and there don't seem to be any Mini "tuners" around

    • @ksull72487
      @ksull72487 Před 7 lety +3

      WeKnowYoureThere NorthAmericanMotoring is the forum I'm on. Mainly just tire pressure. The air filter is quick and easy definitely changes the sound and winds up paying a bit for it self since they are reusable. The best possible thing you could do is get a slightly colder plug and a tune. Run the Regular plugs until then. Copper offers the best conductivity but they require changes often and the odds of breaking the boot on the coil are stong pulling them often. Iridium is the best for conductivity and longevity. Platinum is what Mini is using stock. So when you do change a plug to match your tune do that. Also consider the gas you run. Some Tuners will can get you a bit more if you can run 93 all day etc. Another option if you want to do it right. It's over priced but is to go to Mini direct and tell them you want the JCW Tune. It's offered. They will rebadge the car etc and tune it. Plugs included. 2k is alot for it but considering itll bump you to 200hp it's not terrible and it won't void a warranty etc. It'll be logged by the dealer. It's totally up to you but a tune is the best bang for the buck. Adding and exhaust etc. is debatable if any power gain for the cost. The mini S stock already has a decent one. The JCW exhaust is mainly aesthetics.
      We can also look into downpipes etc. There's way to get power but the most reliable sure fire way is a tune. Berger Motorsports has a plug in that tweaks the sensors. Lots of ppl have proven fairly large increases plus it unplugs. But it fools your car is essentially what it's doing. A computer flash or tune is a little more professional.

      Kristopher Sullivan hey Kris. I am currently running an Owen turbo with a decat militek downpipe. I’m also stage 3 manic with big intercooler, mated to a JCW exhaust with no cats. You think I should have a different exhaust to go with all my upgrades? Or is the JCW good? Thanks!! I want to make sure I’m getting the most out of my Owen turbo. Thanks

      @tubelessronniee Před 6 lety +1

      Pistons and other internals are different in the JCW...engine..
      PeaceThe differences between a 09+ Factory JCW and a MINI Cooper S:
      Engine

More aggressive ECU tuning

Turbo back exhaust system. The exhaustand catalytic converter have been reworked and enlarged to aid the unrestricted flow and reduction in back pressure. Also NO second cat.

Upgraded turbocharger - larger and strengthened twin-scroll turbocharger and exhaust manifold resulting in a pressure increase from 0.9 to 1.3 bar

      Upgraded pistons

      Upgraded Getrag transmission

Upgraded clutch and throwout bearing

6 speed manual only

208hp

Upgraded engine components: The engine is fitted with reinforced and specifically ground pistons as well as a cylinder head with optimized rigidity and modified gasket. The cylinder head wall thickness is increased to reduce potential stress during peak output. The intakevalves and valve seat rings are also made of a specially resilient material, and compared to the engine of the MINI Cooper S there is a slight reduction in compression. The air filter, air mass sensor, exhaust system and catalytic converter have been modified so as to achieve a power-enhancing de-throttling on the induction and exhaust side. The through-flow capacity of the clean air duct to the turbocharger has also been increased.

    • @drunkandsober5193
      @drunkandsober5193 Před 9 lety

      +SupitsOli2nd Sounds like he means "removing things that normally make the car quiet, and by doing so reducing weight and making the car go faster" So generally this is sound deadening in that context, but it really adds up to not a lot of weight. It's more when you remove deadening, ac, ps, sound, trim, climate control, etc that it adds up to make a noticeable difference.

    • @UnlinealHand
      @UnlinealHand Před 9 lety

      +SupitsOli2nd Cold air intakes on these cars make the turbo noise 10x louder. Aftermarket catback exhausts are also much louder. You have to think the main demographics on these cars is actually 20-30 year old women and 50+ year old men and women, so they really had to suppress this car a lot, therefore making it slower.

    • @BrandonWirtz
      @BrandonWirtz  Před 6 lety

      You need a tuner if you upgrade turbo. How much boost can you run is a bit of an unknown, which is the other reason you want a tuner, I had a tune that was "Smoke people in the quarter" which I would not have run daily.
      I had a tune that was get 40 MPG
      I had a tune that was 8 laps at Mazda Speedway.
      And one for daily driving.
      16 PSI is easy, and if you can hit that at lower RPMs that is awesome. 17 won't blow anything up occasionally. 19 shoots oil places it shouldn't be. 20 psi and you'd better plan to add oil 5 minutes after the run.

  • @DaytonCarCare
    @DaytonCarCare Před 5 lety

    Get an Audi TT Quattro 1.8 turbo, right off, in stock form, will have 225 hp and more room for improvement with upgrades. A simple Stage 1 tune will bump it up to near 260 HP off of 91 octane.

  • @armymatt83
    @armymatt83 Před 9 lety +1

    a stock one of these is almost as fast as a stock Lincoln LS, keeping in mind the LS is down a gear with a auto, 23% drivetrain loss and 1000lbs heavier. a mini tuned for 330-350hp is about as fast as a boss mustang.

  • @YonniFui
    @YonniFui Před 8 lety

    will the stock internals take the turbo at max capacity?

    • @ksull72487
      @ksull72487 Před 7 lety +1

      Johnny OrGBravo Nope. haha. Mini is not a 300hp car. Serious cash needed. Engine swap perferably. High 200s doable tho. Remember it's power to weight ratio. The car is faster than GTIs well into 200hp with 180hp. So keep that in mind. 300hp would be a ton for the size and weight.

    • @YonniFui
      @YonniFui Před 7 lety

      Well I feel that the cars weight can only go so much and instead of getting the weight lower I wanna make it faster. But im starting to get the idea the the mini is just isnt a fast car, I know that its better then an mk but where I live they mostly stance them then race them. Right now I have two coworker that wanna race but one is a g34 turbo (i think) and the other one is an a3. Main goal is to just take on most cars that pull up on a red light or freeway

      @ksull72487 Před 7 lety +1

      Jon Parker All good engines. The N14, N16, N18 etc. All had issues. The most solid is the N18 or a stock engine no turbo. etc. Change Oil more often. Helps with many issues.

    • @parkerjon29
      @parkerjon29 Před 7 lety +1

      I got a 2012 with the N18 :) No issues to speak of yet. I try to do the oil every 5k and check it once or twice per month.

    • @ksull72487
      @ksull72487 Před 7 lety +3

      Jon Parker Yeah, out of all of them that's the Prince Engine you want if you want a turbo. The N18. That was the end of it for Mini before they switch to a 2.0. But there were some nice changes that improved upon reliability. I have the same. Change the Oil at 7.5k. 10 is excessive more so for the older model due to cokeing in the turbo. 5k has proven to be to early. Swap plugs at 30-60k be careful not to rip the boot and when your brakes go replace at 3k so you can reuse the brake sensor and don't risk it popping. Brake sensors once they go off and u get the light you have to buy a new one. Your car counts down the miles at around 3k you can replace them before the brake sensor goes off and just reset it. Reuse lol. The sensor is a fail-safe in case one side wears faster or the computer gets it wrong. Lots of ppl say change the trans fluid as well. No car with a N18 has the CVT nightmare. It's a headache as it is sealed and although there is a way to drain and fill. The dealer will want to drop the tranny and you will have a headache doing it yourself although it can be done without dropping the trans. Just run it. Idle the car for 30 seconds before take off and shut down be easy on it until warm up and be easy on it on the way to parking. It'll do its job and last.
      The biggest thing I have found is the plugs. They need to be replaced a little more frequently than Mini says. 60k is okay but at 30k I'm my eyes it didn't look to far off from replacement and my mechanic seems to agree with these cars. Same with the oil. The only reason Oil went to 15k and then Mini dropped it to 10k was the fact if you bought the car you probably got a maintenance package including oil changes for free during warranty. Well Mini/BMW is for profit. Less oil changes they include the more they make. The reason they said 15k originally and then dropped to 10k after issues popped up. Many people have sent oil to Blackstone Labs. Just about every test suggests 7.5k give or take. Don't waste your money but don't draw it out. I use Mobil 1 0W-40 synthetic cheap reliable, meets the requirements and sold everywhere.
      *Just a note as I don't want to be responsible for somebody's car. If you take my advice on plugs and replace every 30-40k instead of 60k. Have an extra coil on hand. The odds you rip the rubber boot on the coil and it gets stuck on the spark plug causing u to get a wire or hanger to rip the rubber off the plug so you can get the plug out. Strong!!!! haha It happens use die electric grease on the tip of the plug where the boot connects and grease for the threads to prevent the issue on your next change. You may want to have a mechanic do it and request die electric grease and what not. Mini will not do that themselves as they never called for it. Probably because they want to charge you for a coil. Trust me. 60k is pushing it but do able. It's the turbo that cause the quicker wear.

    Worth noting that if you do a big turbo on these cars, it's foolish not to do a methanol injection kit. Even with a decent tune and 93 octane and an intercooler, 20lbs of boost is all these motors can really handle without risk of blowing up. Invest in an Aquamist HFS 3 or 4 and buy yourself that insurance policy for big power.
