    The old guy laughing while crying "oh no" is such a complex reaction; it's a mix of disassociation and grief. Everyone else laughs because they are so broken they use humor as a cooping mechanism. Which Is the underlying message of the song; children forced to normalize the traumatic loss of a father and just expecting them to move past it.

    I haven't seen anyone else notice this, but there's an audience member at 3:49 who's smiling and enjoying the performance before everything goes to shit. He was so close to winning over the crowd with talent, but then he accidentally achieves it with violence. 3:49

      i more so perceived it as people only started to enjoy it at all when he provoked someone. before this man smiles we watch gambino take another mans cigarette from him and blow smoke in his face. he started pushing someone around, and got a reaction. this is just furthered by not only provoking him, but just straight up killing him. even worse by his OWN hands. then everyone starts to love it. push someone until they die trying to pick up for themselves. beat down on someone and make them kill themselves unintentionally. he dodged all blame and got the fame

    on the surface it sounds like a simple fun pop song, in reality its a cry for help from the perspective of a young black male that didn't have a proper father figure and had to fend for himself through street activity. On the surface the video looks like a goofy lighthearted showcase of choreography but in reality it's a black mirror-esque social commentary on how we only care about talented black artists if there's tragedy and trauma involved.

    I feel like I’ve been listening to music for a thousand years. Every five or ten years everyone goes mad saying someone is an absolute genius who has managed by chance to put their finger on the zeitgeist of their moment. This guys finger is never on his moment, it spans a universality that has to mean something to everyone who listens and ought to compel them to be better or answer should they feel they can’t. Imagine if he had been painting chapel ceilings in the renaissance! They’d have hidden shapes of anatomical discoveries amongst subversive images that contradict the orthodoxy of the person that commissioned the painting. Genuine genius holds a mirror to us (the zeitgeist touchers) while also showing us a route from the past to a more reasonable future. That’s why there are so few geniuses as most gifted people can’t do both. I hate agreeing with people and I almost exclusively like punk music but people need to watch this person and listen to his words.

Between his music, acting, and creative “art” through music videos or shows like Atlanta, if you consider that kind of work art, there’s very few individuals like him. Yet what controls hip hop conversations on social media and mainstream media are one trick ponies (not a bad thing btw) like Yeat, Drake, Travis Scott, Megan The Stallion etc. If talent is actually appreciated, we’d be seeing his name a lot more. Get a new producer and learn to mix it yourself because i see the inspiration of ASAP and maybe bino since you're here but for example the chorus isn't really good. Keep going though bro, Kendrick, Gambino, and all the greats have 1000's of throw aways before they got to where they are. Kanye spent summers and you should too.

    Donal Glover is so smart and intentional with his work. Once, one of the black audience member got shot, everyone started to love his performance, and Gambino although shocked and disturbed. He capitalises on it and continues to perform without any regard to the DEAD PERSON in the crowd; boosting his popularity at the cost of a life and acting as social commentary for both musicians and society as a whole. Also, since, the music video was set in what looks to be the 1950's, accompanied by the contrasting modern lyrics and instrumentals; he's probably saying that we're still stuck in this brutal time-period and how we should be better and BIGGER like how people were shown when Young Nudy was featured.

      The time period in the bar is more 1930’s/40's, but even the Nudy part is empty because really he's talking to no one. He's rapping about being in top of the world and not giving anyone shit but really he's alone and disconnected from the reality of the regular people in the bar, but is still focused on the people in there instead of going on & doing his own thing. And the woman is just a sexy body - posing faceless and silent, kinda referring to how hip-hop prefers women....

    The director knows these fresh-faced boys are going to be eaten alive by the consumer, no one anticipates that someone in the crowd *** spoiler *** but we aren't treated with shock and a demand for change. Instead we get denial, quick acceptance, and entertainment. Originally, the entertainer tried every tactic to find common ground with the crowd - but nothing worked quite as well as unexpected violence. I still think about the sweet woman in the beginning calling for a mop, she knew there would be blood but there was also money to be made. Great job Gambino and crew! Loved this!

      Gambino's part was thought provoking and had layers to it, especially when you watch the video. I see it as a critique of the negative aspects of street culture. That is, if you're trapped in the poverty or ghetto cycle, don't glorify the streets and that life. Emancipate yourself, like Frederick Douglass (his auto-biography is a must read)...he liberated himself from slavery, he didn't continue to talk or act like slave.
      So when Nudy's part hits, for me, it's just like going right back into slave culture / chaos. One could say Nudy was purposely trying to parody how idiotic some rap lyrics can be...but after Gambino's part, I was expecting a positive lift-off, something to take us to higher ground. Unfortunately, the end really detracts from what otherwise is a great song with unique depth.

      @wildbear2472 that's a good view on it. I can see what you mean but I feel like that was the point of it. That's the reality of the music industry these days so I think it was intentional. That's what I think anyways.

    • @milkimadeit
      @milkimadeit Před 3 dny

      @skeetsmcgrew3282 I don't think it's at Nudys expense really. They're both from Atlanta and judging from the comments a lot of people haven't heard Nudy. While I get the message from the video and song, I still listen to the kinda music this song is talking about and I'm still a huge fan of Young Nudy. Gambino is a lot bigger than Nudy and I would imagine Nudy isn't dumb and understands the point of the song. Hell, they were probably in the studio together. My point is, Nudys verse fits, it's also getting him more attention. Regardless of what the attention is from it's still publicity which is exactly what an artist needs to succeed.
