- 3rd gen 4runner lift. In this video, I show you how I installed a suspension lift on my 3rd Gen Toyota 4runner (96-02). The process is very similar to many other Toyota vehicles including Tacoma,
FJ Cruiser and newer 4Runners. I'm running 285/75/R16 which measure out to about 32.8"
I used Bilstein 5100 shocks and struts, Ome 2883 coils front & 2890 rear.
Total Lift: Front should be 3" lift and rear should be 3-3.5" lift depending on weight.

This guy kinda sounds like Robert Downey Jr in Iron man 😂
Damn you too huh. I never realized but you're not the first to say it lol.
Hardly
Totally man! 🤣🤣🤣🤟
I was thinking that same..
But he looks like Marc Anthony lol
Straight up info and helpful tips.. definitely gonna take on this project. Thanks man👏👏👏
Great video, very quick, simple, and not too much blabber.... excellent visual aid! Keep it up!!
Thanks William.
Solid! Makes me want to take on a 4runner lift in the future
Thanks bud, very chill and easy to listen to. Unlike all the others loud and obnoxious
You've got me thinking about re-doing my front end w/ OME springs instead of the original springs and the 5100s
Best Toyota video I've seen in forever 😆
Really appreciate your video and time you take to explain! Great job
I think ur videos are Always so informative & well explained. Thank you...if I may suggest ...explanation of the tools u use to explain proper use of the actual tool like this spring compressor. I fortunately have access to many different tools but not sure exactly proper & safe use of them.....Just a mere suggestion 👍👍👍
Keep up the Great Work 💪💯👍💯👍
Wow, the end results look great! Nice job with the truck and the video. Like how you even posted the parts in the description. Thanks!
Thank you.
3rd gen 4runners with E-lockers are beasts for what it is. A very valuable asset.
Definitely put it to the test today. She goes places!
E locker? A dif lock?
@@ag1639 yea..the rear diff lockers "RR diff"
Honestly man, this video was highly informative. Very cool
Thanks

Awesome. Thank you
Just found your channel. I subbed and shared it to a few buddy’s. Good work👍
Awesome, thanks man. I appreciate that very much.
Thanks for the great video and nice lookin Yota
Very good one .. really appreciate it and looking forward to get an appointment in future to do it on my 3 rd gen 4 runner ..
Thanks, sounds good.
Thanks for this! Very informative!
Wow, I didn't expect a 4runner lift video to pop up in my recommended. I'm getting an extremely similar set up done next week with 883/890 + bilstein 5100. My 98 is literally the same paint with grey flares. You have no idea how happy I am to see such a video. Can't wait to get my 4runner worked on!
Similar? That's exactly what I installed lol. I've been out in it a few times now and its working great, videos coming. Goodluck with your build.
Can't wait to do this to mine! Good video, truck looks good as well. 👍
Do it! Goodluck as well. As we speak I'm working the shop building a customers exactly like mine. 👍
Looks good brother
rear shocks: remove the bottom bolt. The top will be rusted so just bend back and for for 2-8 minutes or grind off like he did. Both work well.
Great video(s). I started following along and catching up on all the videos as I just picked up a 97 SR5 project. Just curious (in your opinion as there and many on the web) after having the diff drop for a while now.. do you think it was worth it and did what it was supposed to do? Thanks for any input you might have.
Total badass looking.
🤘
Great Video will order parts and do my truck next week.
Thanks, goodluck with yous.
Great job! Though it always freaks me out to see people doing this kind of work without eye protection. I guess it's the dad in me.
Curious on where you got the bushing for the top of the strut. My 5100 didn’t come with them and my Kyb top hats didn’t come with them but they have the bushing built in just like the ones you have. Thanks! love the vids
Awesome video. Thanks.
Very helpful thanks for sharing
Great vid! Keep it up!
Thank you 👍
Great video!
Hey brother I have a 98 SR5 I just picked up Bilstein 5100s in Old Man emu coils as well I am getting them installed this weekend at my buddy's shop he will also be doing the same sway bar end links front to the rear second gen rear to the front. I also got a panhard correction kit he's going to be welding on. I appreciate the video your limited looks awesome man.
Hell yeah. You'll love, having a blast on the trails with mine.
@@Beacon_Offroad awesome man awesome. I did not get a gift drop kit yet I am going to go without it for a couple weeks and if I feel it is necessary I will do it after that when I do the lower ball joints I plan on doing those in a month replacing with OEM Toyota lower ball joints my runner only has 115k but I don't want to take any chances they don't look terrible but they don't look brand new either LOL. would you recommend Toyota OEM lower ball joints? That's what everyone says even though they're somewhat known for failing no one seems to recommend any other aftermarket brand do you know any that you might recommend or would you say oem?
@@thomasburr9244 Well here at my shop we definitely install aftermarket joints regularly. That being said, everyone got in my head as well and I recently bought oem for my truck.
@@Beacon_Offroad so you have installed aftermarket lower ball joints on 4runners? But you got scared of all the naysayers in the forums so you went OEM for your own runner LOL yea kind of the boat I'm in there's not a massive price difference between the two
@@thomasburr9244 not actually any runners, just usual stuff we see around the shop. After seeing the 3rd gen 4runner lower ball joint failure support group page on Facebook im horrified 😄 hahaha
Sir what would you suggest if I were to do outboard rear shocks, with my 891 rear springs, shock that would have an eyelet Top and bottom for this lift? (Upper shock mounts are toast).
Great video!
Where is the best place to order bilsteins in Canada? Any suggestions?
Super sweet rig !
Thank yoj
Great video can you tell me where you bought your springs and shocks from the 883‘s and Bluestein 5100 Pt
whats the way to mitigate the driver's side lean as you described/measured in your other video? Isn't one side spring supposed to be longer than the other?
The pan hard kit that you welded onto the rear for correcting the lift for the track bar - is this kit included with the Bilstein suspension lift or is this pan hard kit sold separately? If sold separately, could you please provide the link? Thanks!
Hey on a 1999 prerunner, it leans to passnger side about 1 1/2 inch... what could main causes be? I replaced all front suspension. Would it be the leaf springs? ?
How to the 3rd gen fronts compare in length to 2nd gen rears?
I am thinking to just use 2nd gen rears all around if they are longer than the 3rd gen fronts...
Nice camera angles! Visualises nicely how it's done.
How do those 883's ride? They are the heaviest spring for the 3rd gen with heavy bumpers, right? So they would have a lot of preload when on the shock, no? I'm looking for the smoothest off-road ride and can't really find comfort related reviews, it seems everyone is just concerned with lift.
So stock upper control arms with 3 in lift works ? Saw people saying you need aftermarket but seems like you aligned it fine. About to order same set up for mine thanks for the video
Hey man I installed the 890’s the coil that has A was taller than B but when installed I have a drivers side rake . Should I switch them. I know the taller coil was suppose to compensate the weight of the gas tank on the drivers side. Any suggestions would be helpful

Awesome Vid. Thanks Sir!

You're welcome 🤘
Nice job!
Thank you for the helpful video. What top hat (strut mount) did you use for the front shock?
Moog strut mount. Can be found at most parts stores.
If the rear end is open and you decide to regear, i recommend a detroit true trac... we did on my son's '97 and it's great...
Thanks, I'll keep that in mind and investigate when it comes time.
Do you have any link to get the differential spacers I don't get them for the 4runner 3rd gen please help me.
I know the rear sway bar links for a 2nd gen will work for the front in a 3rd gen. And the front sway bar links for a 3rd gen will work on the rear. What’s the ones you installed here and the part number?
Nice video. Are there any downsides to lifting a truck? Does it do any extra wear and tear to a transmission or engine? Thanks-
I am from Venezuela I have a 4runner 1998 4x4 with front bumper with winch and rear bumper with rubber holder I have weight in front and behind that you recommend me to mount Bilstein 5100 and what springs old man emu
My 2nd gen Yukon is on Bilstein 5100 all around and a leveling kit, what would you recommend for a similar lift please if not more?
I do have a e locker carrier it came out of a 3 gent 4 runner needs bearing
Great job
do you have a link for where you got the spacers for the front dif?
Hey man, I recently installed a 3 inch lift kit onto my 4Runner. I followed all the instructions and now it looks like the front end is higher than the back end. Almost like it’s tilted backward. What do you think the issue is? Thanks
wow is great; How much would it cost me to do all this update to my Toyota RAV4 2017 LE?.
About how much did you put into the suspension with labor and everything
With the 883’s being the more heavy duty spring, how did u find the ride quality with no extra weight at the time?
Nice! Thanks
@KBAutotech&Adventure can we get a link for the parts ive been wanting to put some clearance on my 4runner and wanna make sure i get all the right parts
Very nice!!!
que opinan de la suspension dobinson
Can a 97 front bumper fit on a 02 3rd gen?
Hey man do you still have your front fender/bumper flares, would like to buy them
I just bought a 99 4Runner today with 110k original miles thing is super clean it's all black I'm going to lift itput it on some fat new tires get a custom front bumper and roof rack it's going to be dope
That's my plan too haha
@@Beacon_Offroad I just got it I am so excited it's a survivor low mileage extremely nice condition black SR5 I am going to get a nice lift and some nice motors roof rack eventually a metal bumper I can't wait I will be following you thank you for the inspiration
@@thomasburr9244do you still have it and how much did u pay for it
Why wheel spacers? Is it so it doesn't rub?
Stock UCAs okay in this configuration?
Thanks for the video. New UCA to clear tires or just proper rims with dimensions to fit them in the wheel well?
Thanks for the answer 🙂
I have some spc's sitting under the bench ready for install but not on yet. I geuss just proper wheel fitment.
2' inch wheel spacers?
Great Video.. It came out Awesome 👌... keep them video coming & keep up the GREAT WORK..💪👍💪👍💪💪

@@Beacon_Offroad i have a 10/98 4Runner SR5 2wd. Want to convert it to 4wd. Do you think using a donor 4Runner 4x4 is cost effective $$$ or just buy a 4x4 4Runner?

Waaaay less hassle to just sell and buy another. Maybe find one on a used lot and trade plus cash depending on the deal. That's what I'd do.
@@Beacon_Offroad Thank You for your advice. I bought this from my accountant (original owner) in mint condition & maintenance regularly. But I going with your advice as far as just buying another one and lift both of them. Thinking 2 inch lift on the 2wd & wheels & 3 in. Lift on the 4x4 i hopefully find close to mint.
Thanks again...I ask you for your advice cause you came across confident & clear a trait long forgotten
THANK YOU

Pro job
I’m installing a 3in Rough Country this weekend, hopefully all will go well
Goodluck
@@Beacon_Offroad is the Rough County a decent lift ? Later on after installation I’d like to add some Bilsteins
@@Adam_Newman is it a spacer lift ?
@@Beacon_Offroad The entry level was but I upgraded to the one with new struts in the front & springs rear
@@Adam_Newman oh good, then it should be fine.
I’m having trouble getting the bottom strut bolt holes to line up. You used a pry bar and piece of wood. How would I go about it?
This usually isn't much of the battle. Wiggle wiggle, if not, put a longish punch or reamer in there to help line it up first.
Does it drive rough with the 883 since they're heavy duty, i wanted to lift my 2" only what should I had gotten. I think i messed up on my order i got 881 front and 891 rear. Advice will really help
No, not at all. I think that's the way it should. You'll be ok 👍
Great vids and info all around… where are you guys located in case we need works done on our 3grunner?
You always message me on Instagram. Same name..
Very good video!! Could you please supply the Bilstein 5100 part numbers for both front and rear? I own a 1996 4Runner LTD that I want to lift the same way you did, thanks!!
added part numbers in the description. Thanks
Hey bro love the videos! I have a question when you got your 285/75/16s did you have Any rubbing issues? I got some pro comp 17x9s just trying to figure out if lll be able to clear those to I just redid the suspension with a 3 inch toytec lift. Obviously I’d need 285/75/17 just want to hear your take on it thanks 🙏
Alignment set up is key. We do a lot of Toyota alignments at my shop. Having someone who understands how to get the most clearance will be a big help. Since that set up ive had, 285/70/17, 285/75/17 and now 295/70/17, all with very little to no rub. Check out my channel.
Ohhh and could you drop me a link by chance for the kits you used for ur 97. Cause That's EXXXACTLAÇY what yr I have. 97 4x4 4RUNNER limited 3400, Automatic. Also kit for rear link bar. PAN HARD BAR KIT AS I THINK YOU CALLED IT.
She's looking good. Let's lift my car next 😂
Was the steering behavior affected after you lifted your runner?
I lifted my 1996 Limited as per your video and now my steering feels a lot different. The steering wheel does not exactly want to return to the center position on its own. I did not go to bigger tires yet!! Could this be affecting the steering??
None what so ever. We lift lots of Toyota's here at the shop. Cant say ive ever heard of this happening for that reason.
If you had to do this again, and you can have bilstein/OME at the same price point as all OME (shocks and coils) what would you choose for your 3rd gen?
For the money, yes, absolutely. That being said, I'll be doing my whole suspension again later this year and ill likely go Dobinsons Ims but thats going to cost double.
can you do the diff spacers on a 2nd gen? i have my torsion like 80% up and alignment was achieved but i wanna get 33s on it now currently rocking some federal coragia 31 mud
To tell you the honest I dont know. Youll have to double to be sure.
This video was very helpful, I’m new to your channel and I really appreciate it, were new CV axles or extensions required ?
Existing oem axles in vehicle. No issues to report at this time. Been out wheelin almost every weekend.
@@Beacon_Offroad Good to hear, ive heard people on forums saying they tear their CV boots due to the lift.
@@pikinachu9850 same. I assume eventually the boots will fail but I definitely have pulled mine off. Is heard of that happening. If it does apparently you can get extended heavy boots and that's what I'll do.
@@Beacon_Offroad Alrght brotha good luck, I’m anxious to further see your build.👍
No rub?
Thank you for the video. I have a question, how is the ride quality compared to the stock setup? Thanks
Its good, slight upgrade.
How’s the angle on the uca ball joint? And how’s the alignment. Just bought the exact kit and was wondering if i needed uca’s on my 01
its was fine stock. I switched to Spc's shortly after just because.
Where did you get the kit for the rear track bar that you installed it ? How do I find that 2 pieces that need to be welded on right?
Emkieth pck. Just Google it and you'll find his site.
I Had my lift put in last week in my 2000 4RNR. So somehow the abs light is on? So the shop made me pay for the sensors for all 4. Which the light wasn’t on before prior to lift install. Now when I drove away the abs light came back on? Pretty frustrated with this. KB do you recommend anything for my situation? Thanks in advanced
Hard to say forsure but what youre saying doesnt make sense. The chances of having 4 bad sensors is almost impossible, cant see that even happening all at once and no chance the lift would cause that.
I've been watching for about a month. Juat got an amazing condition 02 T4R. The only thing I cam tell that's bad is the rack and pinion and paint. Stil have to take it to do smog test and register to make it legal, maintenance, and then mods 😀
Also, what do you know think of the front diff drop kit? Did it make a difference and if it did, was it worth it?
Awesome. Tbh I cant really even tell, but considering its so cheap, why not right.
Do I need wheel spacers to clear UCA on OEM 265/70/16?
I dont know your specific set up but I know of a handful doing it without, so you're should be good.
Hello just found your channel very helpful!/ will this setup handle a roof top tent? and added cargo?
The front 883s would be good, I'd opt for the 891s in the rear. I'll be switching to those as well as I carry a lot of gear.
Awesome ! Thank you for the quick response will definitely get 883&891s
Can’t you just use 2nd gen end links on both fronts and rears?
Does this same set up work on 2wd 2000 4runner limited with 16in wheels?? I just ordered OME springs 906 rears and 880 fronts. Please respond I’m hoping I did not get ahead of my self I jumped on both pairs of spring for $300.
Hard to say exactly. The weights will be different. No front diff, axles, transfer case etc..
Did you not have to loosen the cam bolts and LCA to put the struts on? On my 4th gen we had to.
I've done many and numerous types of toyotas and never had to do that.
🔥
question? would I need to replace sway bar end links for a 2 inch lift?
It's not a case of need. You can run a 3" without. But would it be better if you did? Yes.
Hey, did you leave the stock control arms in or did you have to swap out later?
At that point they were stock. I did change them shortly after but it worked fine without.
