  • Draining water from below-grade plumbing with This Old House plumbing and heating expert Richard Trethewey. (See below for a shopping list and tools.)

    Richard helped a homeowner connect his bar sink to the main sewer drain for the house with an electric pump. The pump was needed because the main drain line is located several feet above the sink. Afterward, back in the workshop, Richard showed some additional devices for ejecting sewage and wastewater from basement plumbing fixtures.
    Shopping List for Installing a Drain Pump for a Basement Sink:
    - laundry tray pump
    - plumber's putty
    - teflon tape
    - PVC pipe and assorted fittings
    - PVC primer and cement
    - no-hub coupling
    - pipe straps
    Tools for Installing a Drain Pump for a Basement Sink:
    - pliers
    - PVC saw
    - nut driver
    - drill/driver
    Richard installed a float-activated pump (model no. LTA-1) that can be used to drain basement sinks. It is manufactured by Hartell Pumps [www.hartell.com/]. Richard also showed a few additional devices for draining sewage and wastewater from basement plumbing fixtures. The macerating toilet is manufactured by SANIFLO [www.saniflo.co...]. The sewage ejection pump is manufactured by Liberty Pumps [www.libertypump...].

    That is the greatest video ever! (no sarcasm). Showing how the control the discharge of the pump so that it doesn't work faster than the faucet was amazing. I enjoyed how he he showed the one-way valve too. This video was very eye-openning. I live in Tucson and it is rare to see a basement home; I was wondering how water gets out of the basement when the discharge pipe is higher than the initial pipe (drain). I understand that the pump is powerful and can lift water 14 feet. Amazing tech.

    Not a plumber, so I have a question. Around 2:48-2:50 when he installs that T-piece into the drain line, how does drain water coming from upstairs sink, toilet etc. not flow down into the drain pump instead of simply flowing out to sewage line?

    • @kflo411
      @kflo411 Před 4 lety +10

      A. That drain line is too small to be a Waste drain, so no solid waste going down it.
      B. The connection is lateral, coming in from the side, same height. It is also angled following the flow direction of the main drain. So...
      C. Fluid dynamics... or simply put, water velocity, pitch, and gravity carry the water downhill. Any little bit that does make it's way sideways into the pump drain will just get caught by check valve.

    I have an old cement triple sink. My washer has, for as long as I have owned the house, gone thru a pvc pipe from the sink drain, down 4 ft over to an elbow to 3" to 4" rubber adjuster placed directly over the floor drain. Now that I am selling, it is an issue. Is there a way to attach the two for a closed flow into the floor? I am not breaking up and digging up the floor. I like the way it is for super easy access to clean/plunge that floor drain on a moment's notice and on a regular basis.

Pumps up, in a 3/4" pipe though. Was there previously with same type of system. I m replacing it with a outtake of 1 /2" now. The other had a 3/4" out. Will this work or will I have to convert 3/4" pipe over to 1 1/2"? I am wondering if I have enough hp also? Thank you

    Can I drain this pump into an existing laundry drain pipe?
    Problem is that the existing utility sink beside the stacked washer dryer (washer on top) is just below (floor is two-three steps below) foundation wall and the drain that goes back into house. So can’t install p-trap without raising it up. Current sink drains to open Rubbermaid container with sump pump going to the washer drain. Not to code and smells.
    I bought this sink pump but I think the only way to drain it (and be code compliant) will be direct into existing laundry drain and then re-direct washer drain directly into sink? Does this sound right?
    Anyway to combine both directly into the laundry drain?

      Personally, I think putting the ball-valve first and the checkvalve second would actually be a better installation because the check valve would then be closed more quickly and securely by the full weight of the water in the vertical pipe without it having to trickle back through the mostly-closed valve first.

    • @jasonmorehouse3756
      @jasonmorehouse3756 Před 6 lety

      The globe valve is used for throttling flow control. Shut off is accomplished by moving the disc against the flow stream rather than across it as in the case with a gate valve. The flow pattern through a globe valve involves changes in direction, resulting in greater resistance to flow, causing high pressure drop.
      Ball valves are an excellent choice for shutoff and control applications, where they are often preferred to gates and globe valves, but they lack their fine control in throttling applications

      Washing machines already incorporate a rather robust pump to discharge their water. I've never seen them try to pump to a ceiling height before, so you'd need to contact the manufacturer to find out if this would work. The other alternative is to simply install a cheap plastic basin sink for your washer to discharge into, and then utilize a pump like Richard featured in this video.

    Stop using plumber's putty! Throw it away, use 100% silicone.
