How to Think About Painting: Rust and Weathering Effects with Terrain

- For this week's video, I deconstruct how I think about painting rust and weathering effects in terrain using the terrain from the Warhammer 40,000: Kill Team Nachmund set.
I actually really enjoy painting terrain because it's one of those things I feel like you don't have to be too careful with and can really just mess around until you find a cool effect that's working. I've developed a couple of strategies for rust and other weathering techniques that I think I've learned to pull off with good effect, which I'll go into in detail here.

The carefree relaxing liberal technique you use here to paint terrain is how I pained most of my miniatures.

Thanks for the great tips mate. I hadn't considered using oils mainly on account of the long drying time. Now it will be reconsidering using them.

Thats mostly how i paint my terrain too. I don't use oil paints though and the painted panels i usually stipple on and leave patches of rust instad of whiping away after painting. Its slower but the effect is more striking i think.
I suggest to add some fine texture paste (bit rougher than typhus corrosion) right after the black basecoat in strategic positions to even enhance the rust look.
Great advice. Although there are some "ready made" products for rust (AK Interactive and Dirty Down Rust are the first that come to mind,) acrylic craft paint and oil washes are in many ways just as effective. I would add some powdered pigments (basically, ground up pastel chalk) in some areas to add a nice texture.
