I'm so excited to pretend like these are all my ideas and I knew about them all along!
You...
Lol
So that’s how North Of The Border has so many ideas😂
Scrape with an exacto knife blade. It makes a lot less of what you need and it’s easier to change the color.
I'm glad you said you want to lick it because that's all I think about when I see good weathering effects. I'm gonna make up a big batch of these for the trick-or-treaters on Halloween.
Audience: Hey, Bill? How do I paint stuff to look like rust?
Bill: Use rust colored paints.
This is the hard hitting crafter knowledge that keeps me coming back.
Yeah, shouldn't have to show it really
" Latex allergy like your dad's", a Haaaaaaaaaaaaa! Classic!
He's a rusty boy, in the rusty world
Rust is drastic, it's fantastic
You can sponge on the wear, rust gets everywhere
Imagination, rust is your creation
Come on, Rustie, let's get dusty.
Beautiful
As someone who still fears weathering and dirtying up their props: I can't wait to use these techniques in three years when I finally get over myself lol
Yeah but it usually makes anything look better so don't worry
only one year left to go until you can try out these techniques 🤞
These kinds of tips are useful across the board. I can see myself using them on miniatures, terrain, sculptures, the neighbor's car. The possibilities are endless, really.

Paint or school glue, sprinkle on flour, let dry, tap the back to knock off any loose flour, paint over it.Makes a great rust!
Glamour shots of rust are the best type of glamour shots! This was super handy Mr. Bill. Thanks as always for this top notch tutorial!
Thank you mate, glad you liked it
Best tutorial I've seen on CZcams. Thank you!
Was looking for a quick tutorial on how to paint rust and was pleasantly surprised to discover this gem of a channel. Not only was this video helpful, it was also entertaining!
Came for the tutorial, stayed for the humour ❤
your textured paint rust is phenomenal. It really suggests rust that's bubbled under the paint to begin with. Excellent stuff Bill. Thank you for your effort to teach the rest of us.
Yeah I'm gonna use it all the time from now on
Outstanding master of rust shares his deep knowledge of the subject of rust! We are all squealing in our seats as our Rockstar shares his madness.
Yeah, just... paint it in rust colours
Cornstarch (Corn Flour) makes a good filler for a texture paint as well.
Ill try it
All of the above is the way to go 🙌
thank you
This was very helpful! I was taking notes like a college student studying for an exam lol. This will be put to good use.
Glad it was helpful!
i just started making dioramas for my 1/12 figures, and was wondering the coolest methods for rusty stuff, appreciate it man.
God that was gorgeous! I had been wondering if you watched craftsman. Wonderful tutorial!
Love Crafsman
That's problem solved. for the custom 'rusty' painting frame, that I will be making for one of my oil paintings, which is - funnily enough - titled "Rust".
Thank you, Bill!
PS: I really hope this comment helps with that algorithm thing. Whatever that is.
This might be my favorite miniature channel ! Funny, great tutorials with simple and effective techniques that I will actually use, creative editing. Fantastic work!
Thank you so much, means alot
the salt method was used by the armor modelers years ago I saw it in Fine Scale modeler its great seeing things being shared across hobbies like that
Hobby grade Rc's also, just about all of these.
For the algorithm!!!!
Bill! Bill! Bill! Bill!
Bill making stuff! Alrighhht.
Oooh the second one with the texture paste might just solve a lack of mud problem im having with a diorama. Cheers!
No worries
I've always started things off afraid. Prop making, 3D printing, portraits, etc, but every time, it's thanks to these that i managed to get over it and give it a spin. Much appreciated
Gotta say, your self-deprecating narration is pretty soothing.
Thanks.
Yep, you're an ARTIST and if you didn't know it already, here you go!!!!!!!!!!! Your funny way of explaining makes your videos enjoyable to watch, and I subscribed right away. You can also use ground coffee or anything for texture, like corn floor, all you need is imagination, and you can make anything. Great work!!!!!!!!!!
That was so entertaining! Thankfully, it was also an excellent tutorial! I got to laugh and learn today. Thank you!
In mathematics and computer science, an algorithm (/ˈælɡərɪðəm/ (audio speaker iconlisten)) is a finite sequence of well-defined instructions, typically used to solve a class of specific problems or to perform a computation.[1] Algorithms are used as specifications for performing calculations and data processing. By making use of Artificial Intelligence, algorithms can perform automated deductions (referred to as automated reasoning) and use mathematical and logical tests to divert the code through various routes (referred to as automated decision-making). Using human characteristics as descriptors of machines in metaphorical ways was already practiced by Alan Turing with terms such as "memory", "search" and "stimulus".[2], bill.
I‘m here to give this episode the love it deserves! Thanks for that awesom Tutorial!!
I'm so glad the seering pain I feel is just my mi d being blow and not something serious..hope blood from my eyes is a simple side effect as well
Sadly yes
My love of rust has been revived 🦾🧡🤎
Thank you muchly. I'm off to rustify some boring dollhouse tools.
Hey Bill excellent no BS clip, you would fit in well down under!
I genuinely smile, laugh, and enjoy every episode you do. Thank you for you wonderful content.
No worries
Yeah, excellent metal decay right there!
I believe that for the toothbrush part of the salt method it works better if the brush is moist. Also worthy of mention is the sponge method, basically the paint method but using a sponge to apply the rusty colors, looks more random and "natural"
Edit: Fixed the overabundance of "sponge", clearly needed more coffee :P
I make my own iron oxide (RUST). I take about 4 rolls of 0000 steel wool and put them a quart jar of white vinegar and set it in the kitchen window for about a month. After the steel wool forms rust, I pour the mixture into a large pan (I use my old darkroom 11"x14" stainless trays for fixing photos) or a shallow baking dish. After about 2 to 3 weeks when the mixture completely dries, I use a single edge razor blade to pulverize the contents into a fine powder and store it in little snuff tins until ready for use. Every batch I've made comes out a little different colour. Since I model HO scale, I never use any weathering powders; instead I go to the dollar store and buy women's makeup in the little plastic cases. For $1.00 you can get quite an assortment of colours and they adhere better than any chalks (pastels) or weathering powder. Of course you still have to fix the model with flat lacquer (I usually use Dullcote), I also buy white chalk and crush it up and use acrylic paint or food colouring to get the colours I want. My rust looks real, well, 'cause it's REAL RUST! Cheers from W Rusty Lane K9POW in eastern Tennessee
Thanks for the great ideas. Almost threw away that very make up. So glad I found your suggestion!
Love your commentary Bill. Thanks for sharing your creativity, great ideas, one and all.
Didnt know i needed to use this to make one of my resin gnomes look rusty... But after watching i feel a deep need to rust up some gnomes!
Sounds like a plan
How have I never seen your channel? You're a riot. Subbed
Another terrific video from a brilliant channel. Totally inspirational.
Love the naturally dry and hilarious voiceovers. Thanks for sharing.
Great tutorial Bill how to make plastic stuff look rusty ....
First video of yours I found. Your humor and detail made subscribe. Thanks for sharing!
I love your dedication to rust. I've been RUSTling up some of my own metal goodness in my projects thanks to your inspiration.
Thank you
The rock salt with some crushed up pieces works real well. But yea, more for an airbrush.
I'm a man of my word.

Wow, these are really good techniques. I've seen some of them used before, but it was cool to see them used all at once on the last sheet. Good job Bill and thanks for another great video.
Glad you liked it mate
@@BillMakingStuff I also have to say I always get a kick out of your humor in these videos. You've really done an excellent job at combining informative content with comedy. Keep up the good work. :)
@@dfcprops3849 thanks!
Just letting you know I still return to this video when I'm looking to refresh my rust plans
I love rust techniques. Thanks for the tutorials!
My pleasure!
Thanks for such a great tutorial, so helpful for an upcoming build I want to try.
Glad I could help

And thanks to North Of The Border.
This is a keeper.
Great job, Bill making Rust.
No worries
Found the channel from Brush and Quill's advent calendar shout out - and glad I did! Top content ,mate. Happily subbed. 👍
There are also metal effects paint with iron in them that you spray a rust activator on and it makes real rust
awesome; brief, useful, inspiring... thanks for sharing
Thats alright.
modern day apothecaries 😭😂😂😂 your videos always cheer me up and inspire me :)
I'm glad
Top banana, Bill, and funny to boot!
Came to see the rust, but was not rushed. The powders were pushed until we were bushed. The fluid was masked without being asked. Cracking effects all...well, I guess chipped and rusted, really. All in all I rate this 10/10, would rust again. Cheers!
Thank you mate
Top 3 effects are the best representations of rust. You got rust with paint flaking, heavy surface rust, and rust if it were polished with a wire wheel.
this helps so much
Thanks Bill, learnt a great deal! Laughed a lot too!
Just how I like it
Hi, really helpful video
This video helped me paint rusty bits
Thank you , very informative , I'm on my way !
Thanks for sharing this rustworthy methods. You made my day.
Glad to hear it!
Great ideas, but Here in Australia a company has made it easy to make the pastels into powder, the tool is in a rectangle shape with a piece of mesh that is in the middle and you rub the pastel on the mesh and you get a lovely powder weathering powder and you use a bonding medium and you got your rust or earth, and build up snow and ice. cheers.
Yeah I have heard of these. Ill look it up
Latex allergy, like your Dad. I see what you did there.
😎
This is seriously a lifesaver, I’ve been looking for somewhat easy way to get a rusty effect for 20 lil shipping containers and this video was perfect! Thanks Bill!!
brilliant and entertaining
Thanks
Great video I’m really enjoying the style of your vids, such a refreshing change from some of the dry stuff out there.
Thank you. Glad you like it
THIS was one of, if not the best rust videos out there....and funny!👍
Nice one man, very helpful 👍
Glad it helped
Good stuff. Its all about a good (c)rust
It is
great work, thanks for the tips and tricks, now time to add to your arsenal rust edges and holes
Glad you liked it
That was really helpful and the methods you used made very realistic looking rusted metal. Thanks for sharing this.
Glad it was helpful!
Great video, really helpful in finding the right kind of method. Personally, it's all about experimentation and finding the right technique you're happy and skilled with. I've made my own powders, tints and paint techniques - it's like a form of alchemy and I love it!
Brill!
The momentous day has arrived!
Prepare to be underwhelmed...
@@BillMakingStuff I was adequately whelmed 😉
Great video
Thanks!
Just had a go on making a rusty tester panel using your textured paint and masking technique! I cried with joy at the outcome! Baking powder is becoming a favourite component in my crafting box! Thanks Bill!
I'm glad you tried it! And it worked! Never thought it would actually work...
Rustpunk is my jam. Love the content. I built my first spray bottle robot the other day thanks to you. Can't wait for the next episode.
Would like to see it, tag me on Instagram
You know I did actually watch this when you put it out and didn't have anything interesting to say, but since you said it didn't get enough love... Your rust is second to none Bill, don't let anyone make you think any different!
I never have anything interesting to say... I still say stuff. Thank you.
Sweet
Thanks
Very Good job Master 👍👍👍🚀🏄
Bloody love The Works me.
And me
Love the content keep it up
Trying
Cracking Tutorial...I use Copydex for masking, it's cheaper, but I can now use it to help do rust 👍👍👍 Thanks Bill
Oh ill look that up thanks
Whats nice is that each technique give the rust a different flavor (coming from an amateur rust taster). The "just paint" give an indoor rust where its not exposed to elements, but metal has a thin rust. The textured paint is like a rusted hull of something found by the sea. While the powders give a rusty look you'd find the desert. Wonderful stuff.
Thanks, I'm glad you enjoyed it
Thank you for this great tutorial. Yes, it is simple, but these are technics, you have to have seen and tried to understand. I've done rust before with expensive model-industry-stuff before and I knew the theory, but know I can do it better and cheaper.
Thats what I strive for
good tutorial
Thanks
