- If IT careers are so rewarding, why do many highly motivated and skilled technical pros consider leaving their jobs each year? One reason is office politics; or more specifically, the de-energizing effects that office politics can have on the unfortunate individuals caught in its grasp.
It's often difficult to define office politics because it is more of a perception than an individual act. It includes the concepts of power, influence, clique, favor, protection, and communication. Additionally, every individual in an organization will have his or her own viewpoint and experience--often with extremely different outcomes.
The negative side to office politics is often described in terms such as backstabbing, bullying, infighting, gossip, favoritism, string pulling, covering up, or working the grapevine. Employees who benefit from office politics may use more positive terms including decision influencing, personnel bonding, clarifying, plugging in, streamlining, or fast tracking.
Key takeaways:
• Navigate organizational politics to get things done
• Cope with difficult situations and people
• Keep cool under pressure
All well and good if you are an extrovert by nature. As a natural introvert all this socializing is draining. I'd like to just come to work do my job and not have to concern myself about what others think of me or me worrying about how should I make them feel. I prefer to work independently and eat my lunch alone lol

Oh yeah, wouldn't we all. But that's not the world we live in. If you get the chance, check out a piece titled The Hatchet Man's Playbook. Absolutely spot on.
This stuff is part of the job.
As a busy full time mom..I look forward to my alone time at work

This is finally the place to land up to learn great tips to be politically savvy and excel at work. Thank you dear for this great work done
my current manager broke all these rules on her way to the top. she started in the same position as me, and is generally reviled by the majority of the office. She just happened to click with the manager at the time who laid the door open for her as a result. but the main reason they clicked was because she was always the hardest working of the group and seemed to understand the company's mission.
The entire 45 mins can be summed up as "be good, do good..." but in reality it's entirely a different game
Wonderfully explained, thanks for sharing...
Good information. If you are just starting in your career I think this is right on. If you've been in business long enough, a lot of this is familiar, but I enjoyed the basketball metaphor. Lots of great reminders. Thank you.
That was valuable presentation. Definitely worth the watch.
These things not happen most of the time.People don't help usually each other.but it's good we have more hope and optimistic. LOVE FROM INDIA.
This was really informative, great video!
I over-perform, go above and beyond, excellent communicator, organized and I definitely make sure that I shine and stand out for great quality work and I get along with everyone. Yet, I work with a lot of management who are just power-tripping, use their power and authority for bad never good.
So you leave!!! I will never work for a abusive boss!!

Great video, very helpful.
sad that this is what the world has become. Process over content. How to brown nose and back stab is more important than doing stuff and being intelligent.
Yup! U hit the nail on the head! It's completely crazy but true! U need to read the Hatchet Man's Playbook!
I'm afraid it has always been that way

yes i do recommend that book and those stories are true, because I have encountered some of them myself.
Excellent...
Best video on this topic so far....
fantastic presentation
I genuinely show interests in other people in the office. I want to get to know them. However, nobody seems to pay any attention to me since I work remotely. It's very hard for me to navigate.
Was the audio recorded with a potato perchance?

Office politics are not a possibility for introverts. It's exhausting and draining. All I can recommend is this. Make sure that the owners or managers see the positives in the work you do. Other people don't matter. Your only real relationship it's with your manager or owner.

doing what you suggest will make it easy for the sharks to eat you up. what you describe is at the best the starting point... you have to learn how to fight back and defend the results of your hard work. Without becoming a shark yourself this is not possible
Can some one help me with the slides of this webinar in particular ?
I think being known as a good politician is a positive point, when there is competition for a position people identified as leaders will have the priority for the position , and leaders are politicians
Spent several years working as a developer. Moved to an analyst position because corporate IT sucks. Seriously sucks.
Never send email if u’re in emotional condition, whether happy or angry..
Trust me
How can I do this when I see people once a month and I they work together all the time?
I'm not in their same circles as them.
funny i just left a very good paying position because of back stabbing underhanded crap from co workers...
Oh yeah, I know exactly what you're talking about. If you get chance, I highly recommend reading a piece titled The Hatchet Man's Playbook. It talks about exactly what you just said. It's better to have a stable, reasonably well paying job with people you like than to have some highly position with people you hate.
Been there done that. It's better to have a job with the right people and make less money than it is to work in a place like you described. If you get the chance, read a piece titled The Hatchet Man's Playbook - a LOT of eye-popping, non-obvious stuff!
Peace of mind is so important. If u get the chance, check out The Hatchet Man's Playbook. You'll really appreciate it!
these are generalities in a vacuum. the real world doesn't work this way. Even being prepared for meetings, you can get called into meetings without notice and also might not have time to prepare either.
You said to expose the sharks, any suggestions on how to go about this?
Read the Hatchet Man's Playbook.
Office politics only works well in the right environments. From my experience if the environment values human trust and information integrity you will be treated well for asking questions and telling the truth (with empathy and logic.)
If you’re in an environment that only values numbers, competition, and poor leadership. Only the ones who do the dirty work get promoted. (Which is not ideal longterm wise.)
It’s all dependent on the environment and what they value.
What's the name of the speaker?
It's all about your boss, and how you fit in company culture. Your job is to make sure your bosses can continue to get paid big bucks, and do less. Sycophants always are being groomed to be the next promotion.
Moraine LAKE Precient observation.
Hello sir .thank u for amazing info.
Well , I have a question. I've been in my work for 2 years now with the same people , and I'm always insecure , and I'm always working.i don't engage with coworkers at all, I don't have connection with any of them to be honest , I don't know where I should start ? And if I changed my attitude suddenly, would it be awkward? What are 1st steps to take in my situation ?
This is just an idea, but start small, whether it's initiating a hello, smiling, asking short questions, then slowly increase interactions. That way you're slowly training them to get use to increase interaction with you.
anyone know the speaker?
These are not office politics...These are what an ideal person wants t o do...But it doesn't work frankly...
Unfortunately you have to get a great relationship with your immediate supervisor and above if not somebody is, help them succeed.
I fear to become a saint after watching your video
What is the name of the presenter? If he has more resources?
jadarite is on the periodic table of elements
My boss is too smart to take my credit and spread it to the rest of the team so I don't have the upper hand compare to others. No one sees what goes on beneath him. The larger the company is getting the more invisible I become
