  • Barris Kustoms created the spooky hot rod "Munster Koach" for the hit 1960's TV show "The Munsters." It was built out of three Ford Model T bodies which brought the total length to 18 feet. It has 10 carburetors, a 289 Ford Cobra engine, and no power steering which makes it a crazy car to drive. George Barris, Tex Smith, Tom Daniel, and Dick & Keith Dean all had a hand in this historic build.

I think the B/W show had a different character in it's own right. It mirrored the look of many of those gothic horror movies we watched on Saturday morning television back then. I understand the colored episodes were expensive to produce and contributed to the cancellation of the series.

In the TV show "The Munsters", Lily went to a used car lot to buy Herman a Birthday Present and she saw a 23-27 "T" Bucket Hot Rod and, a Hearse! She asked the Salesman if he could combine the two cars? He said We can do anything you want, so, the next episode was "Hermans Birthday Present!". Let me tell you, when they brought out the Munsters Koach, I thought it was the Coolest Car I ever saw! I was about 14 or 15 when the Munsters series was playing, and I never missed one episode! I laughed my butt off every week and so did all my friends! Herman and Grandpa were a perfect comedy duo, and their timing was perfect! Too bad Hollywood doesn't still make great tv shows as funny as that anymore. The kids nowadays don't know what they're missing, but then again, they probably wouldn't like it because there isn't any killing in it, or back stabbing like there is in todays kiddy matinees?!

I'm pushing 60, and, now that I'm getting up in years, I only now recognize classic vehicles, and old, ornate furniture, made (or usually hand-carved) out of REAL wood (not pressboard), just to name a few. I miss the days of watching glassblowers creating unique pieces of art, and the skills to do so. When I was younger, all that, was lost on me.

As to the steering-- This is a very long wheelbase with a Model T (I think) pitman arm draglink steering box. It takes lots of movement to make it move. That little bit of movement that would make a Model T turn on a dime doesn't do as much when the wheelbase is 2.5 times longer than the steering box was designed for. Also remember that in filming there are lots of cameras and several takes and many times that we see Dennis move the wheel it is an edited clip so we really don't know where each segment was filmed or the speed of the "Koach". It might look like Dennis is driving a long straight street then the clip jumps to Dennis cranking on the wheel but it might not be that way at all. But driving it would be squirrelly. Cool video!!

Who's the dark arts wizard who can synchronize 10 carburetors?
I built that model back in the day, way too cool.
