I think its a bit more convoluted than that. You can go through the Olympian gambit of European obstacles just trying to own a gun, or you can just buy the "illicit" version. Im sure if we had the same draconian firearms laws, the US would be SATURATED with identical guns with most all of them being just for shits and giggles, and/or owned for the sole fact that the govt doesn't want you to have them... which is why many Americans own firearms to begin with.
I love how most reporters that are ignorant of guns emphasize the "Semi-Automatic" phrase. They think that somehow "Semi-Automatic" weapons are more dangerous than "Normal" weapons. The ignorance of these people is astounding.

People call them cars or airplanes. It's much more unusual to see bolt-action or fully-automatic weapons so using a descriptor for those is understandable.

Great camera work on this piece. For all the people arguing about guns, the point of the documentary was not to say people shouldn't have guns. On the contrary, it said that people will have guns no matter what, for varying purposes. The issue in this case is that the guns are not licensed and thus cannot be traced in any way, making them easier to use in crimes.
