    In INHUMAN KIND, Motherboard gains exclusive access to a small fleet of US Army bomb disposal robots-the same platforms the military has weaponized-and to a pair of DARPA’s six-foot-tall bipedal humanoid robots. We also meet Nobel Peace Prize winner Jody Williams, renowned physicist Max Tegmark, and others who grapple with the specter of artificial intelligence, killer robots, and a technological precedent forged in the atomic age. It’s a story about the evolving relationship between humans and robots, and what AI in machines bodes for the future of war and the human race.

      Rule 2: If it can't be weaponised, scrap it.

    • @PHeMoX
      @PHeMoX Před 4 lety +2

      Rule 1 is something more along the lines of: Rule 1: If we don't develop this particular type of weapon, some other nation will. So might as well make sure we are the first. Rule 2: Develop multipurpose platforms to cut cost and expand capabilities. In other words, if you have a HUMVEE that can have a machine gun attached on the back or top, you'd of course make it so you can mount _any_ weapon on it. You wouldn't make a HUMVEE specifically for just 1 type of gun and then build a new HUMVEE that supports another type. That's basically stupid. I'm as anti-war as the next person by principle, but if you disregard rule 1 then sooner or later your country will meet a superior force. Also, the key to understanding and countering weapons like these robots, is really all within developing them yourself. And no, I don't believe for a second these things couldn't have an 'off switch'. Don't be crazy. In fact, you will see that in terms of communication there's a risk of these things getting hacked or influenced and made to respond to commands, should they indeed be more autonomous. By the way, that aircraft bomber they showed, is literally only autonomous in how it takes off and lands, flies around, finds its route. It DOES NOT have an AI that makes it follow directives. To say it someday will be autonomous 'at the flick of a switch' , then raging war by its own choices is being extremely dishonest.

    • @AnthonyGoodley
      @AnthonyGoodley Před 5 lety +30

      But the main point of this video is that when robots are combined with AI software and can think on their own there is no longer a human making the life or death decision. Then you have autonomous killing machines. This is quite different from a missile or torpedo. A human hit the button to fire it typically. But I suspect there are also systems in place where a missile launch also can happen automatically under the control of a computer.
      A war fought by AI could be a very scary thing if it starts making bad decisions. All it takes is one bad choice for it to escalate out of control.

These robots can do deep underwater explorations, they can enter radioactive zones, they can be used for fire fighting, they can be used for logistical support...the list goes on. And if one day a country is fed up of losing young men and women in wars, yes, they can arm these robots with weapons. It simply comes down to how they use them.

We are 5 years past the time this video was made and now Boston Dynamics has a robot that can do back flips! In this video the robot had a hard time just standing up. MIT says we will have the Terminator Robot by 2040. It looks like we are on course for this and even a little ahead of schedule. What if the Terminator movie isn't a movie at all? Maybe it is a training film to show us what is up ahead in the near future we are creating.

    We started using UAV's (Unmanned Aerial Vehicles) solely for reconnaissance? Actually in WWII both sides started using remotely controlled vehicles, both land and air solely to destroy the enemy. The Germans had remotely controlled (by wire) "mini" tanks to roll up to or under enemy tanks to blow them up. They also had radio controlled (wireless) bombs designed mainly to use against ships. The US used radio control in bombers cram pack filled with as much explosives the plane could carry and still fly with the intent of crashing into a target.
    Now, fast forward to today. The "predator" drones in use today were designed for reconnaissance only. Then the military put missiles on it. Then they decided that was good, but they wanted something better, something designed specifically to deploy weapons systems. Now we have UCAV's (Unmanned Combat Aerial Vehicles). We built robots to save the lives of bomb disposal personal, then the military said that was good but they wanted something else that was designed to carry weapons systems. Now we have relatively small tracked remotely controlled vehicles with machine guns, grenade launchers or even rocket launchers on them. Now they are asking for robots that move like us to carry out dangerous tasks like putting out fires or entering hazardous areas to rescue people or just to carry heavy loads to lighten the burden of the fighting men. But it's only a matter of time before they say, "that's good, but I want something that can use weapons systems". For now they are all controlled by people, but already they are asking for autonomous (not directly controlled by a person) robots that can be dropped into a combat zone and carry out missions like a normal combat unit today, but consisting of only robots.
    It's almost like we are designing our own destruction. Have any of those people never seen any of the terminator movies? The computer system put in charge had a directive to end wars and protect us, so it set on to the task of destroying the cause of our destruction, us. We are the cause of our own destruction. So it saw it's duty was to kill us all because we are the most destructive threat to ourselves.
    We cannot allow our governments to sew the seeds of our destruction by the very machines we build to "protect us" from us.

    I don't understand here statement on "We are not opposed to artificial intelligence, but we are against robots that can target, and kill someone on its own." Wouldn't artificial intelligence potentially lead to something like that?

      MrGovenator1 Well technally you could program a High EQ into a robot

    • @fredflintstone8048
      @fredflintstone8048 Před 9 lety +11

      MrGovenator1 Artificial intelligence is a widely defined and perceived term. Even a simple computer program in a particular sense 'thinks for itself' in that it can carry out a set of programmed instruction unaided once they are programmed in and the sequence started. Ultimately all any computer can do is carry out instructions that were programmed in. Even the self learning robots collect and store data that is used for correction in a way that was precisely programmed by a human.
      Regarding gaining a will of their own apart from the person programming the machine, that is not possible. Robots are not sentient beings with a self will. They merely carry out instruction. They give us the impression that they are thinking as we do, but they merely mimic us because the designers made them that way. The reality is that we have no idea how to build a machine with a self will. We don't even understand how 'free will' or self will in a human works. It's a topic that has been studied and debated for a very long time. Robots are not even close to self determination. Those that believe they are, are more familiar with the science fiction movies than they are familiar with how these machines actually work.
      With this said, Jody is absolutely correct in saying that the military will weaponize the robots. Look at all military technology that we have today already. It's a form of robotics that can kill efficiently, powerfully with it's operator at a distance which does two things:
      1) Protects the operator from the potential harm of personal engagement.
      2) Isolates the operator from the horror of the action making it surreal, much like a video game, thus removing humanity / empathy from the equation of harming another human being.
      Is this new? Not at all. Just like the crew of the Enola Gay, dropping it's nuclear warhead from high above Japan, the modern soldier can be isolated from not only the danger, but the emotional impact of doing damage to fellow human beings.
      The scientists / developers will not stop creating these robots any more than the scientists who developed the nuclear bomb could or would stop. It's not only their living in that their work is funded by the military, but also the challenge is irresistible just as it was with the bomb. Some of the scientists making the bomb buried their head in the sand employing denial that it would not be used. The wiser people knew, but kept going because man is really not 'good' at heart, but selfish, Egotistical.

      @MrGovenator1 Před 9 lety +1

      Fred Flintstone That got really deep. Okay, so the way you are explaining it would seem that my knowledge of AI is what science fiction has us to believe. In that case, lets think about it in that sense for a second. If AI was exactly how it was portrayed in the movies, and we ever did manage to develop that sort of technology. It could potentially led up to my original comment? I have no real knowledge of robotics or engineering, or even that sort of software development. So I more questioning what sounded like a statement that contradicted its self.

    • @fredflintstone8048
      @fredflintstone8048 Před 9 lety

      MrGovenator1
      One of the reasons I got into the definition of AI is because the question becomes moot when we consider how robots work. A robot will not decide of it's own free will, or let's say 'apart from it's programming' that it's a good idea to harm people.
      But let's just say for the sake of discussion that it would be possible to create a Self willed sentient machine. I think your question is that sentience could potentially lead to Machines that decide for themselves to kill people. One of my favorite movies as a youth was the 'Forbin Project' The movie was centered on this idea. The computer system decided that people were harmful to themselves and others around them so it decided it should be in charge of the human race and make all important descisions. Those descisions included killing people who got in it's way..
      Who knows what would motivate true AI computers? Their programs written by humans? Perhaps, but the idea of the sentient computer that becomes completely autonomous is that it breaks free of the constraints of it's programming and moves on to higher, better thinking. Would the machines care about humans? I see no reason for them to do so, but at the same time I don't see any reason to think they would be agressive toward humans. If programmed for self survival they might knock a person down who got between it and the wall plug when it's batteries were running low... ;-)
      Concerning the ability of computers and robotics in the present, a robot can be programmed to automatically do certain pattern and profile recognition, so without so called AI (the scifi brand), it's possible for robots to be deadly toward people and this is controlled by the most dangerous animal on planet earth. The human. Also, technology goes wrong, so a robot that identifies enemies will no doubt sooner or later go 'haywire', and kill the wrong people. As the video demonstrated, drones are used to blow up buildings where a number of people meet together. Could have been a potluck dinner, but the powers that control these things don't care. Blast anything that moves.

    It is something a non-computer programmer or robotics person would be concerned about because they don't understand that people need to program them - they will not start thinking on their own. EVERY tool and machine and even rocks can kill. You cannot eliminate all threats. If we do not create service robots we will be left behind by other nations who could use them against us. The point is that PEOPLE are behind the machine if it is car, a gun or a robot. We can use anything for good or bad, but we need to understand it so we can control it or counter those that are used for evil. People hated America before we used drones to target terrorists. We have saved many lives by proactively striking the terrorists. We are not intentionally attacking innocent - the terrorists are putting civilians at risk by locating their cells in civilian areas. War is NOT sterile but we have made it so much safer for civilians that every accidental death makes it to the headlines for the FIRST time in history. Rather than point out this achievement, the media touts the exception rather than the rule. Here are a few facts the media and the Left ignores:
    * There are far more violent deaths in our own inner-cities than civilian deaths in the war zones.
    * There are far more babies killed in abortion clinics than ALL deaths in the war zones.
