- The Guitar Style of Pat Metheny Part 1 "The Early Years"
This episode is the first of a multi-part series on the guitar style of Pat Metheny from the years 1975-1984. In this episode I discuss the early Metheny sound and how here achieved it. I also explore the early stylistic traits of his playing that used Jazz, Rock and Country elements to create his eclectic sound.

I don't know what's more impressive Pats music or your interpretation of his music. Your ability to analyze is beyond measure
I know right? Rick just slips into the solo after 2 beats and hes nailing pat's licks......Just amazed!
Like seriously! ❤️✌️🇨🇦🎸
Pun intended, Chris?
Agree. Someone in the newest comments called him (PM or RB) a "cheesy guitarist". That person is CLUELESS
Pats music
Takes a genius to explain (simply) the genius of Pat Metheny
This is probably the first "how Pat Metheny plays" video I've seen that might actually say something about how Pat Metheny plays.
When Pat Metheny picked up a guitar the world changed for ever. He has everything. People have made whole careers on only 1/100th of what he will show in one song. And he puts it into every song. Find him and listen.
I was born to be a "guitar guy" in Indianapolis and was performing by mid-60's, and have always been pretty damn good at it. But, I met Pat, and Mick, and Gary in the summer of 1973 ( stage band camp in Normal, Illinois ) through family in Boston ( before I went to Berklee ), and immediately realized that there were true wizards in the room. The guitar fingerboard never looked the same to me from then on, even though I spent MUCH time on nylon strings and "Segovia Repertoire". Memorization IS challenging, especially in Baroque Music, but not as instantaneously creative as these guys, Pat in particular. Lucky we all are to have such people in the world. Really lucky.
Rick, I am watching this the day following the night Lyle Mays died. I was PMG's interpreter on their first tour of Poland, back in the 1980s. My heart breaks
I share your sadness Wladek. Those two brothers bound together by such magical creations. I feel like a beautiful dream that for me lasted more than 30 years has abruptly come to an end. I'm so thankful.
Yes Wladek, I feel the great loss too.
Wladek, your pain is real, and widely shared. Lyle was incredibly creative, and his grace shone through so many of the group's compositions.
Pat's work with Anna Maria Jopek was incredible (I'm assuming your connection was that collaboration), and I'm grateful that those recordings introduced me to Leszek Mozder, an artist in his own right.
Pat Metheny is the most expressive musician ever. Uplifting and positive feel like an endless blue sky.
@Patrick - I like that analogy, "endless blue sky". 👍🖖😎
Love your description of Pat's music.
Endless blue sky.
Patrick Rodrigue agreed
He also makes the most expressive/funny guitar faces when he’s really feeling himself during his guitar solos.
You sir are unbelievably talented. To cover and explain the genius of Pat is amazing. For me you have unlocked the many style techniques that has haunted my dreams since I first heard Pat in my teenage years in the 70’s. I’ve been playing on stage now for over 45 years but only the blues only to be secretly wishing I could play like Pat. Thank you so much for your work and ability to teach us what’s behind the curtain.
First it was Bach, then Steely Dan, now Pat Metheny - I'm so glad I've subscribed!
The more you get into the details, the more you realize how geniously Pat's playing is. Very big stuff.
I got to meet Pat back in '93 in Gainesville, FL. My college guitar teacher was a student of Pat's at Berklee back in the 70's, and was able to get Pat to come talk to our guitar class! Cool stuff!
Pat Metheny is a real American treasure. I don’t know of any other musician who is as serious as Pat about his craft, and to hear him speak you realize quickly how smart he is and how he is able to express in words his point as well as he expresses his message through his instrument. Pure genius composer that I believe is as important as Aaron Copeland with his ability to sound truly American. I still listen to him daily and have for 30 years plus, for my money he’s the best jazz player ever. Everyone should know how important he is to music.
Agree. Someone in the recent comments called him a "cheesy guitarist". That person is CLUELESS
I'm not even a guitar player (I'm a drummer) but even I found this fascinating. Obviously, it takes one superb technician and musician to dissect the playing of another.Obviously, Pat Metheny was/is a prodigy, being able to grasp all kinds of scales and such at such an early age. He is one of my favorite artists, period. Many thanks for posting this and the others.
Pat must have put in a crazy amount of work on each lick. Talent +
9:11 - Screen grab from Joni Mitchell's Shadows and Light. What a brilliant album that is.
This is one of the finest lectures I’ve ever witnessed.
How does one summon the time in a busy life like yours even in youth to pick up so much knowlege in so many diffrent styles and learn to produce and write a hit song. Ive seen teachers write down on a blackboard how Charlie Parker plays but you have actually injested the exact solos of so many players and can demonstrate them like nothing. Incredible!
Thanks Vincent! Glad somebody finally noticed lol.
He was a college music prof for 5 yrs and did a graduate deg. That’s probably where he worked a lot of this out.
Don McLeans Vincent would be a nice” Why this song is great” vid.
Sir, you deserve 500,000 subscribers monthly.... I’ve been a Metheny minion all my life, being myself a serious guitar aficionado I always felt alone in my musings about his playing, melodies, solos etc etc, now I found a fantastic/unique teacher who opens a new dimension on his music, I can’t tell you enough how grateful I am for this gift, you added a 5th dimension of enjoyment of this wonderful music.. thanks..thanks
Metheny is the man! "Phasedance" is one of his greatest tunes of all-time. Your interview with him was excellent, too.
What's always amazed me about all of Pat Metheny's work is not so much about dexterity and playing style, but the unparalleled complexity of HARMONY ... along with extremely creative, appealing, narcotic crafting of SONGS (for me the peak was "Letter From Home" album I've listened to hundreds of times). That in my view is what for me has made what he (and Lyle Mays) does musically so unique and addicting to listen to. Far and away my favorite musical artist.
How awesome you are Rick, I learned about Pat in 1985 from my jazz Prof Charlie Jennison at UNH, he had done some teaching at Berklee, and my life changed forever ...moved to Palo Alto in 1989 and have been more or less in California ever since. Pat's has become the soundtrack to my very colorful and strange life. Just before coming back to the US in 1984, I'd been living in Switzerland and was introduced to Andreas Vollenweider by a mutual Italian friend ...years later took up Celtic harp and electro-harp ...ran into David Arkenstone as a neighbor and friend in Cambria CA years later...funny how paths cross. My former hubby turned out to have been Todd Rundgren's sound engineer at Utopia in Bearsville back in the late 70s. It's like a huge interdimensional puzzle coming together ....peace and blessings from Sedona AZ🙏🏵️🦁🌵
By far, Pat Metheny is my favorite guitar player. #2 isn't even close.
You, Sir, are an asset for humanity :)
Thank you very much for posting this lesson.
Am not adequately skilled to express how much I appreciate this. Thank you.
I was turned on to Pat in my dorm room. A guy across the hall loaned me "Watercolors." I was hooked. I must have seen Pat perform 6-8 times, and each time was fresh. Beyond his technical brilliance, his teeth, and his striped shirts....was this guy committed to giving other musicians a little exposure. I remember when he introduced Pedro Aznar for the first time....and in Berkeley, he introduced a group of sisters who had put some lyrics to one of his tunes. His kind and caring introductions of these young musicians....was so cool. Thanks Pat....for always looking up!
Bruce Moeller was at that show. Lyrics to Phase Dance
Discovered Pat Metheny in college in 1978. I was in a recored store and saw a poster about PM playing that night on campus. I bought the white album (Phase Dance and all that) and was hooked. Enjoy your program.
PAT's A GENIUS. PERIOD. (Thanks!)
Great video. I'm a huge Pat Metheny fan. The first time I saw him in concert he did indeed open with Phase Dance :)
Dude, you f**king rock!!!! That was a quality breakdown of one of the greats, and executed brilliantly. I'm so glad you've come to CZcams to share your skills and knowledge - always an education to watch!
Pat also studied with Toninho Horta. Look for this musician at youtube, specially the Terra dos Pássaros album!
Nice video into Pat's style and sound!!! Congrats
Toninho is one of the best musicians in the world. So much musical gold is from Brazil.
I saw all his first tours . I started playing his music on 12 string w/ New Chautauqua .Brightsize, Metheny Group, Watercolors &
American Garage was an awesome tour and then came Left Turn and it was on. Full Circle was my personal favorite tour .
The last show I saw was autotonatron? Misspelled . But Ive seen him 20+ times including with Mitchell at griffiths park for a rehearsal in 78 I believe . He's my GOAT .
I am late to the Rick Beato fan club, but better late than never. Of course I also love PM, and am glad my old room mate turned me onto him.
The rare value of Rick is his combination of being a music genius, and also apparently being an amazingly generous and wonderful human being. I'm convinced now more than ever Rick is a American treasure.
if the world was in trouble and the only way out was to send 2 men to play our way out of trouble ...i would say send in Pat and Lyle, they would bogle the thoughts and emotional feelings of anything . 48 now , 17 i found pat metheny and i haven't recovered since, this video was fantastically explained, what a player you are too Rick Beato
Metheny was an amazing musician even in high school. I was in the same school, at the same time he was. He played a few assemblies at the school during our senior year, jaw dropping even then. I never met him, but now I wish I had. I played bass in garage bands in those days after teaching myself guitar and other musicians I knew there were saying he took the phrase 'far out' even farther.
I remember seeing PM perform at the Frankfurt Opera house in Germany in 1995 with Lyle Mays
I have to add a comment to this Rick .....I have been listening to Pat Metheny for 30 years, and being a player myself, never quite understood the complexity of his playing and you have broken it down so well. I guess I play along with his music not realizing what I am doing technically. Thank you so much for all the time you put into your videos.....please keep them coming !!
Great to watch this! Saw Pat back in 1987 in Lowell MA, my jazz prof Charlie Jennison at UNH turned me onto him in 1984 with American Garage...never stopped listening, became the soundtrack of my life!! Bless from Big Sur🦁
Rick, wow! I am just amazed and stunned with all of the talent, wisdom and knowledge that you possess. I know you have worked your are off to get where you are.... The interesting thing about you is, is that your not merely a good "technician" or sole "cerebral", you actually embody ALL of this with ease and it comes across easily to us listeners and viewers! Deepest gratitude.
Metheny's music put you into an introspective intellectual level and opens up a plethora of emotions, hes soloing is lyrical and seems like a journey
Nice description BV!
Analysis makes this drummer appreciate Pat even more. Thank you.
Best explanation of Pat's style so far !
First time I ever heard Pat play was at an outdoor concert at the University of Miami in 1973 on a warm night during college spring break opening for the main act - whom I forgot! I was struck even then by his sound. Nice playing, Rick.
Wow. What a discovery. After years of adoring the work of Mr Metheny, I get an insight into the cogs and sprockets that produced so much joyful music. However, Rick, unlike you, I have only managed to see him once. So far. Boy does he get around. Just not much to the UK unfortunately. Just discovered the Dan Gottlieb period, which was unknown to me. So musical. Quite different to Paul Wertico and very different to Mr Sanchez. Two favourite tracks so far, the extraordinary Heat of the Day and the work of art that is The Way Up. Cheers Rick.
All my wife can say is "Whats with the hair?" Shes been saying this for thirty years. All I can hear is progress.
And the hair has progressed also.
We want him playing guitar as much as possible. Let us do our hair.
Hudge Pat Metheny fan. Cant believe I didn't see you video until today. Love this!
Rick, you are brilliant. Not many people can dissect such genius proclivities.
Amazing as usual...I fully agree with the comment that Pat is so much more than a jazz musician. I'm still getting over The Way Up live best night of music I've ever seen
Pat Meheny is so versatile ,
He is a master guitarist.
Chops are unbelivable.
You can certainly see that music is his true love ! 🤗🏖
Totally agree. I find that “The way up” is a masterpiece. I got to talk for a few minutes with Lyle Mays after seeing them perform it in Montreal. Lyle was such an amazing pianist and human being. RIP Lyle.
The early years were great. He was unknown and with such a fluid style. I saw him a couple of times at free concerts at Swope Park in Kansas City, where I think he is from. Outdoors in the evening, it was a great time to discover an up and coming jazz guitarist.
Wow! Cool Jerry!!
I was fortunate to be at Berklee from '74-'78, so I had the good luck to live a lot this stuff. Very nice presentation of the music and approach of a very important musician!
I have that real book 1978
These videos all start with a cool story , then some theory and concept that really challenge the limits and question the extent of my own knowledge,
I love these videos , i can finally see how far it can all be taken
Love Pat Metheney,R.I.P. to his keyboardist Lyle Mays, amazing musicians, medicine for the brain their unique style of prog jazz.
..TY,,.,.Rick Beato...Like your work and Love PM....on my pay list always ....
Nice history lesson and analysis observations. I was probably one of the 900 who bought Bright Size Life. I bought everything else in the late 60s and 70s. I maybe should have bought a house instead. The music then was incomprehensible to me. Corea, Mclaughlin, were awesome but what hell are they playing and how? It was hard to learn because nobody else knew either. CZcams is a resource I never dreamed of as a young player.
The "exercises" you talk about should possibly be called etudes. Classical guitar etudes are studies on a particular technique or interval.
I owe s big thanks to my high school girlfriend's late father who was a big Pat fan and played the the American Garage LP, George Winston, and Michael Hedges often when I was at their house around '84. Much respect and gratitude to her Father.
I listen to American Garage about once a week!
I saw Pat on his first tour with Gary Burton, Steve Swallow and Mick Goodrick in a club off King Street in Toronto. That was in 1974 and I have never tired of his music since.
How can you not love Pat Metheny music damn I forget how good is music really is I used to have a car stereo in my motorhome that was over the top in volume and wattage and sound and I used to pop in a Pat Metheny tape and that motorhome used to just explode in sound it was ecstatic
The passion comes through, excellent!
that chromatic lick is mind-bending, thank you!
I had the pleasure of seeing Pat Metheney and Lyle Mays at SUNY Oswego in 1978. He sparked my deep interest in jazz, and improvisation! Phase Dance was what he opened the concert with. . .
Wow. I'm not a guitar player but I know Mathenys music very well. I learned so much by watching your video. One of the best videos on CZcams. Thank you
Thanks so much for your videos, Rick. When I listen to American Garage, I hear Metheny's tribute to Aaron Copeland. I've always been waiting for his tribute to Steely Dan album.........
Metheny and Steely Dan, welcomed in the same breath.
My favourite guitarist. It's amazing to see how conversant you are with his licks and the theory involved. Thank you!
I once read a PhD thesis on his style/writing. It's nice to see the different interpretations. Great video and work.
A sensational guitarist and teacher.
We all love Pat, what a great player teacher you are. Thank you
Pat is one of my all time favorite musicians. And boy, does Rick have his sound and style down to a science!
You Sir, deserve a medal for this video! Greetings from Brazil!
So glad I came across this! I’m going to listen to Pat Metheny for the first time in November. I only discovered him this year and am going through his repertoire, but wondered whether I could fully appreciate the performance with my lack of knowledge of jazz/jazz fusion guitar. I’m currently a student of classical guitar and am trying to broaden my horizons. After this breakdown of his style, I’m now more excited about the upcoming event.
I can't thank you enough for this and all of your videos. Bravo !
Superb, Superior and so 21st Century. Rick You Make Learning Music JOY-FULL
Your channel has become like an oasis to me :) thanks so much. This made me want to learn Bright Size Life - so beautiful.
I played show clubs around Boston fairly often in the 70s. Around '76 ( '77? ) I heard a public radio station broadcast a Pat Metheny recording or live performance. It definitely grabbed one's attention.
In the fall of '78, I was playing around Boston again. A fellow Akronite, Jeff Golub, was living in Allston at the time and he invited me to go see The Pat Metheny Group (original configuration) at the Paradise Club. It was an amazing musical experience as well as very humbling. Of course, I'm not the only guitar player who has been humbled by Jeff G., or Pat M.
Pat M. was playing through the early version of an MXR rack-mount digital delay, into an Acoustic amp, (model unknown).
@RB - you're such a name dropper.
Nice job Rick. Big Pat fan. Great comments and playing. As always, you're doing a fine job.
Wow. You are a fantastic player, Rick! Thanks for sharing your insights!
How cool. Love your analysis of Pat's music and playing. As for the concert at Nazareth in 1981, I was there!! I think that was the start of his synth guitar and the Offramp Tour. I lived in Rochester at that time and previously saw him at Brockport with the 1980-81 tour, but nothing compared to the concert at Nazareth. I was so blown away being a guitar player myself. That was a milestone in music history as far as I am considered.I play with Nik in Rocheter who I am sure you know of. Dave Mancini is a good friend of mine who I am beting you know. So good to hear you play and praise my most favorite player/composer.
So who needs Pat?!! You can play his tunes!! Fab!
By far the best insight into Pat I have ever heard, so much more than the piecemeal teachers who do a multitude of guitarists techniques yet never get deep into the schema of knowledge, the vocabulary and technique of the guitarist. This is by far more detailed and fascinating.
Amazing. Thank you!
You play just like Pat. I love Pat Metheny.
Rick, I love this video. Thanks for attempting to explain quantum physics to a caveman. I get about 1% of what you've demonstrated here and if I can work my way up to 10% I'll be a greatly improved guitarist/musician.
Best explanation of Pat's genius I've seen on You Tube.
Nice job Rick. My takeaway is to learn as much as you can about your heroes in any walk of life. Its important to study your idols and Pat is as deep a topic as someone like John Coltrane. Jazz innovators they are and very worthy studies.
O.M.G. Fascinating! For someone who knows virtually nothing about music theory or playing technique, this was quite an education. Amazing analysis!
Great in-depth exploration of Pat's gitar style. I've been looking for this for years.
Brilliant video. Thanks for uploading this.
Brilliant video!! Thanks for sharing.
This is brilliant. Thank you for such great content!
Cant wait to watch part 2. I'm a huge Metheny fan!
Thanks!
this video needs more attention
Excellent thanks!
I love Pat and this is so FANTASTIC!
Fascinating, going to have to watch this one a couple more times... Thank You! 😎
Great work, very informative and engaging! Thanks so much for sharing this!
Completely amazed by this channel !
Outstanding! Thank you for your insights!!!!
Thanks for this lesson. Great to see these scales done so well. Glad I found your video's Rick!
Saw him play with Bruce Hornby a few years ago....together, not one as an opener. They were just two uber talented musicians, playing their brains out and enjoying themselves. I was so fortunate.
Playing catch-up. Thanks Rick!
So much knowledge here. Love it. Thanks Rick!
Simply great stuff.. You are amazing Mr .Beato. Thank you!
I'm soooo happy to have found your channel Rick! I look forward to listening and learning from you. Metheny has been a part of me since I was 16 and had been playing guitar for 2 years. I could never play anywhere like what he does, but his music has been an inspiration for 30+ years. Saw him from the front row at the Bushnell in CT in 1988. It was an incredibly moving experience as I'm sure you can imagine. Thank you so much for the time you put into your channel. Truly amazing stuff!
