Happy Rocktober.
What a profound and powerful gift this man was, and continues to be. God bless Jerry... God bless the Grateful Dead!
Weir is such an amazing guitarist, I’m totally digging his tone and phrasing here. Could he be the most underrated guitarist of all time?
Omg yes. He’s an astonish genius on the guitar. Totally invented his technique and cords and has an uncanny ability to
Accentuate by staccato. I’ve heard a lot
Of. Incredibly fast guitarists like
prince for example or
Someone today who is very fast and clean is named Mihali if you want to check him out but I. Occasion have heard weir play so
Fast, so many notes so fast, it sounds like a slide. And when he takes the high lead on occasion like in a black muddy river or a sugaree lead, it’s beautiful. Beautiful intuition. Think how good he’d have to be to get up there wvery night in this band. And in this combo
Of songs, it’s a joke when other bands that aren’t 2 guitar cover bands try it- never comes through smooth. Absolutely need weir to drive the change. His playing gets mentioned a lot but his singing is also totally needing to be mentioned. Incredible falsetto. His speaking voice is high baritone and he’d sing high soprano notes. Beautiful sense of how to use his voice. And not to just hush but talk
About amazing song writing. Like go listen to weather report suite or in particular sage and spirit. Unreal. And his words were written with lyricists but when he would change them himself - omg. Like in lost sailor “it takes chains to get free”
Like how amazing a thing to say. And he’s a good lookin guy with a great mind and conscience. And he’s a
Stellium
Scorpio.
There you go Bob.
*chords. Duh. Anyway take care and hugs for you friend
I finally get to paste in these quotes from Tom Constanten and Jerry.
"Weir may have been selling himself short, as he was able to grow with the music. In Tom Constenten’s view, “Weir is the easiest person I know of to underestimate… A lot of fine guitar technique only got displayed when Jerry broke a string.”
Years later, Garcia would be surprised by all the discoveries Weir made in his guitar-playing. “That’s his unique value - he’s an extraordinarily original player in a world full of people who sound like each other. He’s got a style that’s totally unique as far as I know. I don’t know anybody else who plays the guitar the way he does… I have a hard time recognizing any influences in his playing…even though I’ve been along for almost all of his musical development. I’ve been playing with him since he was 16 or so.”
One of the dynamics in the band was that Weir was the 'kid' in the bunch, and was frequently quite spaced out; so to some extent he always had to play catch-up with the others. David Nelson said, "I remember the first rehearsals at Dana Morgan's... Garcia was just railing on Weir. 'No, no, goon child! No, no, I told you a thousand times!' He'd be yelling about some passage in the song. 'Let's try it again!' But it was all very good-humored; everybody was laughing."
T.C and Jerry Garcia ... What an AMAZING compliment from Jerry which he just said in a 'matter of fact' way. I got this from dead essays . blog spot . pom with a c instead of a 'p'. this is one of the deepest GD 'sites' that I know of, but it's under 'History' > '1968 The Firing' ...
They were such a great combination of talents that you can listen to this numerous times and hear something new every time. One time you concentrate on Bobby, next it's Phil Lesh's amazing bass lines then another time it's Brent on keyboards. To answer your question though, quite probably.
He is, but compared to those early 70s China/Riders, I find it a lot harder to find him in the mix here--comes up in the mix finally toward the end of the jam going into Rider. Also, it seemed like, back in those older versions, Jerry would sit back and really let Bobby shine during that transition jam. Doesn't seem to do so here.
My favorite combo ❤🧡💚💚💙💜
Saw my first show in 87 at 17. Blew me away!Still on the bus and I'm 51. Been almost 40 years!✌✌😁🥰
Saw my first show in 87......Love ya brother....Bus come by and I got on that's where it all began!!!!!!
The dead we're hitting on all cylinders, these were some awesome times man.. Nothing lasts forever, I'm sitting back listening to soulful music with a smile on my face. 👍
Nothing lasts forever but the recordings will outlast us for sure
I always enjoy shows from 87 to 91. There was a certain energy that pushed the band. I saw quite a bit of msg, Nassau Coliseum and Meadowlands shows in that time and always left the venue satisfied.
MSG was my favorite venue of the 3 you mention, , the small.venues.like the Beacon I liked better
@@1369buddy wow you got to see the 76 beacon shows. That must've been a great time. I got to see Allmans , government mule and many others there later on.
The world went to shit when you left us Captain. I hope I get to visit with you just once over there. ❤
This makes me happy!
Insane mix! So Good.

Man, Phil is crushing this!
he is particularly bouncy
All of them are!Wow!Yes Phil was all over those frets! Wow. I had to get up and start dancing!😁😆✌
I got up and started dancing all by myself!!!!😝😆
Grateful for this song; Sounds lovely, reminding me of music years back but no lesser for sure. Great composition & singin’❣️🌹👌
This feels good.
G was just 45 but looking all worn and ancient. I did lots of shows in that era and we were pleased as punch with anything we could, this is some FINE interplay though with G and Brent
Brings tears and memories, God bless the captain and crew🌞
@3:34 Garcia starts flexing... Sweet performance by the 🌷💀... Billy's drum stick flip & jazz, ....Brent's putting his shoulders into tickling those 🎹's😏 ...Rocking vocals 🎤 from Bobby especially on Rider 🎸 .... Deep notes resonates from Phil's bass... and don't forget Mickey's 💞 driving rythums.... I luv All you DeadHeads!
Sooooooo discreptive Kris!!!!!!! Love it!!!!!!!! Peace n Love
The surf was breaking on the Time Coast beach as we lay there soaking in the last rays of the sun as the Dead played their mesmerising tunes & filled the air with love & joy.
In '87 I shouted louder, louder ... and I wish I was headlight in the cool Colorado rain
Definitely one of the best! they are on point!

Big thumbs up to that! Surely missed but never forgotten!! Luv'n'hugz ems
Jerry sure could make the axe sing
We had a great 3 days when Jerry got back from his “ vacation.” Some say he had to re learn the guitar ?! I’ll never forget that weekend , good times !
That has to be a slight exaggeration. I always heard he had to re learn the guitar but you never hear anything to back it up. When you first hear that anecdote, its as if jerry's memory was completely wiped, and he had to learn from scratch. But I bet in reality his hands just needed to loosen up again, he was probably just really rusty and clunky for a little while. maybe a week. But he clearly never forgot his signature riffs, or lost his ability to.play his own unique style. Instead he was sitting in with people very soon after his coma and it was clear he was still Jerry. it would be amazing if he literally did forget everything, and had to take guitar lessons for a while and was still able to get it all back. But from what it sounds, he just had to shake the cobwebs off. Obviously his hands were swollen from diabetes and that made it hard to play until he got it under control.
@@kevinr.3542 actually.... i forget who it was but they actually said they had to teach jerry how to play my funny valentine... it was from some interview...
Actually Merl Saunders reintroduced Jerry to his Guitar after his Summer 86' Diabetic Coma !!!! 💀⚡✌❤🌹
He completely relearned the guitar
Merle Saunders -- they played it together in Merle and friends and Merle helped him come
Back. He completely relearned the guitar that fast. His first show out was sitting in with los lobos And then jgb and then fall dead. Garcia is God. Don’t you guys get it? He completely relearned everything in a few months
Thanksss...!!!
Wake and bake!!!
Love Bob's tone on this.
Which Bob will that be?

Bob weir. The good looking auburn headed kid to the right of Garcia on the rhythm guitar. The one responsible for assuring the transition between these songs. Peace and love to all of Europe
Jane Seamore Lovely music great...! Now i spotted the good looking auburn haired Bob Weir..He’s the sportive type with his shorts.. and can sing too❣️👌
You think all Bob’s are handsome?🧐😝
My 2 all time favorite Dead songs!
What's your numero uno? Just curious. ( I'm guessing Eyes of the world, or maybe Playing in the band)
Brent was just like a lighting bolt just a flash of light. NFA 65-95!?!
By 87 Brent had found his stride and fit perfectly....this unlocked his creative songwriting period also.....check out the blow aways from spring '90 for peak brent

Where's the Phil love man?
metalhead86deadhead92 I ❤️ Phil.
It's everywhere..... Always
Phil is great
Phil is running these songs.
@@christopherwarren2965 I think he's referring to the lack of camera time
Where’s Bobby’s sound?
Not trying to be a drag but - is this the best you guys got in the tank? ?
Come on all the years people Jerry looks pained and uncomfortable from the start… Compare it to many other videos where Jer is just exuding joy. Roosevelt 76 Sugaree opener comes to mind. And certainly others from the late 80’s/90’s.
For me, this is a hard view. When García sings I wish I was a headlight on the northbound train, I’ll tell you what he’s feeling - I freaking wish I wasn’t here right now, I really really wish I was on the northbound train.
Love you JG, anyone who sweats like that must be all right
Funny how two different fans can feel/hear something so different. I see this as an unhurried and patient prototypical China-Rider for this period. Jerry often has a stone, almost bemused, face--really, from what I have seen, about the only time he did not was during 89-90 when he and Brent got into a sweet groove and really drew energy off one another. Additionally, the jammy transition between China and Rider is Jerry-driven, tasteful, and patient: it seems to at least rather naturally hit the expected climax guitar/band riff (often this feels forced). I will not say it is a China- Rider for the ages, but it is solid and, even, a bit above average for this period. (To be frank, I often have trouble getting past Jerry's distant look; I often ask--does he want to be there; does he enjoy what he is hearing. I think the answer is, for most shows on most days, he could take it or leave it. The audience builds the mystique around it!)
There is always one down vote every week?!?!? How??? Who is this person???
Sometimes people steeped in the disease of alcoholism that have uncontrollable tremors in their extremeties, possibly causing them to downvote a video that they would have otherwise approved of.

You sure this was not Oct 1988 I'm sure my girl was there and her son was just a few weeks old
Yo
🥲🙏🏻
Don't hate
you think he couldn't retire? they made their money on concerts, concerts were all they were about. They could have retired but they were a road band and the road is what kept them alive. they werent the best band musically they were the best band communally they identified with their fans and played for them. The girls in the tie die dresses looked like a giant flower garden, I'm sure that's what the band saw and why they kept playing year after year because as long as they playing the promise that the meek might inherit the earth might still be a reality.
Not Jerry’s best, but not too bad.
Why the crappy effects at the best part as they transition from China to Rider.....basta! But damn Jerry tears up that Rider!
those effects are sick on the right chemicals
