    I had an '87 Evinrude 15 that the grommets for the water cooling system so shut from the damned alcohol in the gas. That's a pretty bad head gasket. I really enjoy your videos are really helpful even for guys like me who work on these damn things.

      +brt 123, Yes the grommets are motor killers on this model for sure. Lucky for me we have no ethanol where I live so far. Salt water does'em in as well. good little kickers otherwise. kodi

      @@kodibassInsideoutboards I really like the way you describe the problem and then you show the solution most of these videos that others do don't describe in detail the problem take for instance how you showed your getting really hot good spark but it's running on one cylinder then when you pulled the head and showed the two cylinder heads and how one is loyal in the other looks like it's been steam cleaned. I work on these things but it's hard to find someone who can describe the problem and then the solution in a way that cogs with the wheels in my head. Keep it up you're very appreciated

    Thank you for pace and detail of your video. Enjoyed it. Question please. If you did compression test on each cylinder and you got 90 lb on both. Could you still have a head gasket leak issue? Thanks

    Thanks for the vid! I have a '89 10 hp Mercury. Low compression. I tried spraying penetrating oil in the cylinders (originally only was about 5 to 10 psi when I first pulled plugs), it's getting about 25 psi on each cylinder now. Apparently, it was sitting for many years. About to pull the head, hopefully, it's just a head gasket and not rings, or worse.

      +B Yep' check your head gasket & cylinder walls, If no scoring is present your motor can be re-ringed'' not to hard @ all on that motor. kodi

      @@kodibassInsideoutboards Thanks! I am looking at the parts breakdown for the cylinder parts, there isn't a gasket listed for the two cases. Strange. There are exhaust side gaskets, seals for the upper and lower crank, and lower gasket for the powerhead. I am going to tear it apart. I will need about $200 in parts, then I will be selling it since I don't have the need for it. It's a very clean outboard, but just about at the price point where if I have to put any more money into it, it would be a wash. Thanks for the video, I love working on boats and outboards, your vid really helped!

    Good work, but wondering since there is evidence of a hot motor why you didn't just replace the thermostat to cover that potential over heating issue. Seeing that it is the wire covering/protector, perhaps the alternator was over charging. My manual says that if the machine has a generator, you should always hook it to a battery to keep the rectifiers from blowing.... but that evidence of heating would bother me....

    Hi kodi, Do the flywheel keys on this type of motor, (9.9/ 15) have a mark that needs to go downward when you install the flywheel? And if so what's the reason for that? Thanks

    Hello Mr Bass. Do you know if there is any way I could rig up forward controls for this model? Obviously steering and gear are ok. The internal throttle linkage is the problem.
    Regards Phil.

  • @fleetwin1
    @fleetwin1 Před 5 lety

    Yeah,, that thing looked way too nice, doesn't even look like it has been run in salt water....Yep, somebody overheated it for sure....They lucked out in that the water didn't get into any of the bearings, sounds good. The question is how and why did it overheat to begin with, and was that problem taken care of....You could ask the owner, but it is doubtful you will get the straight scoop....The only other thing that worries me is that this engine has TWO of those pesky upper water tube grommets cuz it is a 15hp. Yeah, the design was improved over the years, but the latest ones still get crushed. But, that engine doesn't look like it has been run much in salt water, so I'm guessing the grommets are not an issue. But, if it were mine, I would definitely pull that powerhead and tend to those grommets. I usually cut them back a bit so they are less likely to get crushed over top of the water tubes. It is such a nice engine, would be a shame to destroy it. I know, I know, the owner won't be interested in spending that kind of money.....

    • @kodibassInsideoutboards
      @kodibassInsideoutboards  Před 5 lety

      +kramden, I agree on those grommets, I thought I was the only one cutting them,,, I have seen so much heat damage to these low profile motors from them rubber motor killers, I will admit I have never came up with a absolute " true Fix" for those grommets. dam shame cause these are pound for pound one of the lightest & most powerful motors out there. kodi
