  • Pulitzer Prize-winning historian Doris Kearns Goodwin's latest book is devoted to her late husband, Richard Goodwin, whose speeches for Presidents John F. Kennedy and Lyndon B. Johnson and Senator Robert F. Kennedy produced some of the most memorable phrases of the era. She talks about her upcoming book, "An Unfinished Love Story: A Personal History of the 1960s," with CBS News chief election and campaign correspondent Robert Costa, and about how history and politics shaped their lives together. Goodwin also explains why she believes people who choose to tune out from participating in this year's critical presidential election are "cowardly."

Ms Doris Goodwin knowledge of American history is incredible. From Lincoln, FDR, JFK and Johnson to her lovely memories growing up loving baseball, I think she’s the only historian that I can actually relate to, the way she shares history with the public is so vibrant, you can see the love and dedication she has for our country. I hope she keeps sharing her infinite knowledge with us and I highly recommend you guys watch Ken Burns’ documentaries, she’s almost in every one of them.

Took a class in college called The Life and Times of Martin Luther King, Junior. Surprisingly, the class talked A LOT about LBJ, and we learned what a crazy character he really was. Hearing Doris talk about LBJ reminded me that when you are the President of the United States, you can maintain decorum in public and still be yourself when the spotlight is not on you. Wonderful story!!!

Did they mention that in November 1963, LBJ was about to be indicted by the Senate on criminal charges? The Bobby Baker and Billy Sol Estes investigations directly implicated Johnson in criminal matters. LBJ was going to be removed from the 1964 Democratic ticket and charged.
But on Nov. 22, JFK was murdered. In Texas, Johnson's home state. And everything changed for LBJ. Instead of going to jail, he moved to the White House.

Agree, all her books are fabulous, including her charming book on baseball, "Wait Till Next Year". My favorites though are "No Ordinary Time" on the war years with Franklin and Eleanor Roosevelt and because of my Irish heritage(!), "The Fitzgeralds and the Kennedys". Her knowledge and research are amazing, and she writes in such an engaging manner. Additionally, she gives a full picture of of the personalities she's writing about (good and bad), and just draws you into the story. Not every historian can write so well, and reading about these wonderful characters in our past makes you proud to be an American.

I attended Mr. Goodwin's memorial service that day in May, 2018 in Concord, and to say that there were many "voices of greatness" would be an understatement. I'll never forget the eulogy she delivered, soberly but with feeling, and not once did she break. Speaker after speaker got up and had their turn on that dais (most of them nationally known historians) and I was absolutely rivetted to every word spoken in that church. Afterwards I waited in line to express my individual condolences, and as she looked at me she had a very faint and quizzical expression, but then smiled and asked who I was. I told her that her youngest son was a client of mine and that we have known each other for several years, and that I was there to offer my support to the rest of the family. She immediately shook my hand and gave me a hug, and it told me that she was the most giving person I had ever met. Just lost a husband, but then wanted to know what connection I had with her family that I made the trek all the way from Boston's northern suburbs to this service, and she was so gracious in her gratitude. Not too many months went by that she also became a client of mine, and I was absolutely thrilled to be part of her new circle. I'm counting the days until her latest book is available for purchase and I will then relish every sentence. Such a wonderful national treasure but, more importantly, such an amazing lady. Miss seeing her so much (switched companies and moved out of Massachusetts during Covid).

It says something interesting about Richard Goodwin that he was part of both Kennedy's inner circle and Johnson's inner circle. LBJ was so pathologically mistrustful of the Kennedys that he didn't keep Kennedy people on unless they particularly impressed him. He initially didn't even want Secret Service agent Clint Hill being on his detail because he had been on Mrs. Kennedy's protection team. Then he ended up trying to hire Hill away from the SS to work for him personally when he left office. This interview makes me want to read more about LBJ, and probably also DKG's book about her husband. ☺

Were it not for Viet Nam Johnson would have been considered one of the greatest Presidents in American history by virtue of the Civil Rights Act What's more, he likely would've sought reelection in 1968 thereby staving off Richard Nixon for at least four years, perhaps longer. A lot of history changes in that situation.

well, if not for Watergate, Nixon would be considered one of the greatest Presidents.....and we are seeing the fruits of LBJ 's policies today with the destruction of the black family, because he rewarded single motherhood and in order for a family to get the most benefits the man had to disappear... correct me if I'm wrong..

We need another LBJ. He didn't give a flying leap what anyone, press included, thought of him.

be careful you do not sanitize Johnson too much. The nation he left on January 20, 1969 was a far worse place than the one he inherited on November 22, 1963
