- Wilderness Survival isn't bushcraft, or camping, nor is it long term wilderness living skills. True survival in the outdoors isn't expending a bunch of energy setting up a permanent home. It's set up shelter to protect from the elements with as little energy expenditure as possible and get out and back home to safety. In this video I show nine different minimalist easy to carry survival shelters. Copy them, or get ideas from them to suit your needs. #wildernessskills #wildernessskills

Dave we love to hear you talk bud that’s why we’re here
Thank you!
He has a wonderful way of talking.
Dave is not the only one loving your way of talking… I hear in the background somewhere like the tail of a rattlesnake ..if it’s the case careful !! Could be some bugs also…
Please don’t hang up your CZcams video!! Too cool !!!
Whenever i hear "Hey everybody", i must have hit the right button.
Lol, thanks for stopping by!
Everytime I hear "hey everybody" in my head there's a voice yelling "hi dr nick" damn Simpsons.
The only thing I would add is a pair of socks 🧦. Nothing like a dry pair of socks to sleep in. Several packs had room for a pair of socks and an energy bar. 💖🌞🌵😷
Absolutely!
Down booties for me!
Clean socks are a must have. I think Dave is just concentrating on shelters
@@GeorgeOrwell-yz6zx, I bet you're right. But he did mention several times that in addition to one of these packs, you'd have a knife, canteen and possibly a ferro rod. ... Now that I'm thinking about it, I'd probably have a lunch in my hiking pack, but an extra energy bar for an unforseen breakfast would be nice. Oh! And maybe a single serve instant coffee would be such a comfort whilst being lost in the woods. ... He did have a down vest in one pack and don't forget the ponchos, so I'm sticking with the socks... even a thin pair to wear whilst you wash and dry your hiking socks... My boots are horrible without any socks. ... You could always keep your tent stakes in a sock instead of a draw string bag. ... You see, on a hike I can justify a survival pack as weight training. But I have a limit... The little yellow bug/snake proof tent, a poncho/tent fly, windshield screen, socks, protein bar and instant coffee. (Maybe a few bandaids in case my tent gets a hole)... That's what I'd be willing to carry in a survival pack. (I like the idea of a net hammock, but trees don't grow close enough here in sunny 🌞 Arizona 🌵. Sending lots of love 💖. 😷
Thanks folks for your comments. Getting these together. As we speak. No knives for the homeless, but I will be adding scissors and toe warmers and forgot the socks. Thank you so much
My favorite expression is "I don't leave the fire to pee without a knife and two days worth of food."
Love your channel.
Very good philosophy! Thanks for watching my friend
Nick you and your dad are one of a very few that are able to do long video's and keep it interesting as fare as I am concerned . The only reason I ever stop watching is do to interruptions. I hope you guys made it through the storm and that the new drainage worked out for you . Stay safe happy Trails.
Fantastic to hear that Brother Mike! We actually fared quite well through the storm. Yard flooded but the basement stayed dry as a bone
Thank you. Always look forward to your videos.
Great to hear that and I'm happy you liked it! Thanks for watching
According to the outdoor expert, Patrick McManus, you should panic first to get it out of your system. Ideally use the "Modified Stationary Panic" so you don't end up running into the next county.
Lol, that's actually a pretty good idea in some situations
Spot-on advice from the late, great Pat McManus!
Thanks for putting so much work into this video, lots of ideas on how to be better prepared. As a hiker I use to think I would be able to stick to the trail and never get lost. I detoured around a down tree in a very wooded area, lost sight of the trail, and got turned around. I spent about 20 minutes finding it again, I was humbled. You never know when you will need one of these.
You are very welcome and I'm glad you liked it. And a BIG THANK YOU for sharing exactly how getting lost can happen! Thanks for watching
I know exactly how long people want to listen to you, Dave...YEARS! Great to see you and Nic out. Fab video. 👍😎🇨🇦🌲⛺
Always great to hear that Marian! Take care and thanks for watching my friend
Heyyyyyy! Another great video with nick too as bonus!
Thanks for watching Brother!
Thank you Dave, there was a lot of useful information to be taken from each of the shelters there to be put to use in anyone’s choice of survival kit. I appreciate the hard work you put in to both preparing, and filming this video. You should never worry how long a video is, because us fans will watch you happily all day long. As always, sending much love to you both 💕 - stay safe from the (just about got some of our freedom back) in U.K!! Crazy times!
You are very welcome and I'm glad you liked it! I figure no matter what climate or terrain a person lives in there's gotta be something useful in these shelters. Stay safe and healthy and thanks for watching Sheila
Hearing you talk was the first reason I subscribed for. Hearing you talk made me watch ALL your videos. Keep doing what you're doing the way you like it. And we shall hear you in the next one!
Im very happy to hear that Dan! Thanks for the support Brother
Loved All That Your Showed & Demoed Too, Great Day For A Coffee, Hap-E Labor Day Weekend, Friends ! Happy Trails From The Sunny Maritimes ! ATB T God Bless
Thanks Terry! And a happy labor day to you too! Thanks for watching and may God bless you brother
Excellent! So good to see so many different survival shelters. Thanks for sharing!
I'm glad you liked it. Thanks for watching Marjie!
Found you years ago searching DIY camping gear.
You remain the most creative outdoors man on the platform inspiring so many projects and fun experiences.
Started sewing gear for my sons Scouting journey.
Learned of Mors here and invented some designs of my own.
Your knowledge and enthusiasm elevate the community here.
Many thanks for your time and energy and inventive approach.❤
Fantastic to hear that Arthur! Making the gear is half the fun! Thanks for the comments and thanks for watching
👍 Danke fürs Hochladen!
👍 Thanks for uploading!
👍 Very good and beautiful, thank you!
👍 Sehr gut und schön, danke!
Thank you my friend!
@@Reallybigmonkey1 You're wellcome!
buddy you talk we'll listen, people don't realize how much you can learn by just listening, not calling you an old timer but i love to listen to stories old timers tell, and you have some very interesting stories to tell, great video
Thank you Robert!
I'd be tired too after carrying and unpacking all these shelters! Great job, as usual.
Lol! Filming this was exhausting. Take care and thanks for watching
Thank you thank you thank you,,,I was into all three of the subjects...A bushcrafter,,a camper,,and survivalist..now only two..but you nailed it...this video has caused me to change my ruck sack to surviving only...it would only take a few things to get me camping again,,,but I NEED to survive to camp and bushcraft!!!!!
You are very welcome Brother and coming from a man with your experiences I'm honored!
Dave, I live here in Texas and when it gets hot the locus make their noise, another month or so and then we will have the sweet sound crickets in the cool of the night. Loved the video, loved the definitions.
Man I love the sound of them crickets and I'm glad you liked it. Thanks for watching Michael!
You are the one youtuber that I always look forward to watching! I get impatient at times waiting for your next video, but when you pop up its DAVE TIME!!! My wife really loves warching you as well! Great having Nick messing with you...LOLOL. You guys keep things real and aren't afraid of making mistakes but turning them into teaching opportunities!
I personally enjoy the longer videos.
One last thing, thanks for exposing me to the many uses of welding rods for bushcraft! You are truly the best! Have a blessed day Dave!!!
Fantastic to hear that Kevin! I do wished I could make more videos than I do but time is always limited. Welding rods are a Bushcrafters main resource! Lol, We are glad y'all liked it and Thanks for watching
Love seeing you two together, thanks for the ideas. Stay well.
We are glad you liked it. Thanks for watching Gabi!
Nothing better than Papa bear Dave and his cub in their natural environment, showing the rest of us how to survive with some pretty decent comfort. Thanks Gents, a visit is always a fine way to spend an evening.
We are glad you liked it Tyler and see ya in the next one
Great survival minimalist shelters Dave. I like the mini super shelter and the bug proof tent especially. Thanks for the video. Hope you and Nick have a great Labor Day weekend.👍🏕
Thanks Jeff, I'm glad you liked it brother. You have a good Labor day weekend too!
Great ideas. Looks like you and Nick were having fun, despite the spiders etc.
Thanks, I'm glad you liked it and we definitely had fun!
Of all the bush craft/survival channels you are the one I will always listen to as golden. You have shown and explained everything better than most. The tent tarp with no door makes me think a Bar-B-Q cover would work too.
Thanks Owen! I'm glad you liked it and my other stuff! Tent flys, bbq covers and mobility scooter covers all will serve this purpose. Take care and thanks for watching
You should make 9 mini videos showing each set up. Love your videos!
Maybe not in a row, because that might get boring, Lol. But I may work my way around showing each set up on a trip!
This was a very thought provoking video a Dave, lots of good ideas.
I'm glad you liked it Don. Thanks for watching
High, go further and best wishes. Kindly Fiete
Thank you my friend!
Thumbs up!!!
Clark
Thanks Clark!
Thank you Nick and Dave for a wonderful video. Nick makes me laugh with his side comments. You guys ROCK.
You are very welcome John and we are glad you liked it!
Great video (as usual)! I enjoyed it immensely. In the Palmer Furnace segment, I believe you had a mobility scooter/chair cover. It looks similar to the cover I put over my wife's scooter. If it isn't, they would make excellent survival covers. You wouldn't be as crowded under one of those as you would be under a plastic garbage bag. Also the cost is between $16.00 to $30.00.
Thanks Buck! I'm glad you liked it. I looked up mobility scooter cover on Amazon and I was impressed! Anti-UV, waterproof, 210 heavy duty tear resistant cloth! That's excellent shelter material. Thanks for watching brother
I enjoyed your video! Thanks very much.
I really liked the sling pack with the single strap. I also enjoyed the "run around in circles "comment. I have heard a quote that is actually the very opposite of what to do, but is a great memory tool. The quote is " when in danger, when in doubt, run in circles, scream and shout."
Thanks Brian, I'm glad you liked it. Lol, running in circles and screaming is the norm for those who panic. Take care and thanks for watching brother
One of your best video's yet . Many great idea's within ! Very good ! Be safe out there .. Gubs
Thanks Gubs, I'm glad you liked it. Thanks for watching
Picked up a bunch of great tips and ideas
Fantastic to hear that Jef!
I love this video! Thanks Dave and Nick! I keep a plastic poncho and mylar blankets in my car. When I go hiking I take a storm shelter. It's bright obnoxious orange. And watch out for that falling debris! 😄
Thanks Ian! I'm glad you liked it! Man it sounds like you're well prepared!
I started my lunch break by looking on CZcams, and there's an hour long video from Dave. Perfect.
Fantastic to hear that Craig!
Some really awesome tips. And nick throwing debris at you was sooo funny. 😁😁😁😁😁
Lol, we are glad you liked it Michelle!
Yay! A new Dave video and a cup of coffee.. I hope the rest of the day measures up!
.. one time the BF forgot the poles for the kids tent.. I put the whole dome tent up with all the ridiculous quantities of cord I always have 🤪.. it’s absolutely possible.. it looks absurd and it’s not ideal for big rain, but it’s doable! LOL
I have the components for a super shelter in most all of my kits.. here in the northeast, it’s possible to get hypothermia most of the year, so it’s a good system to know and have the bones for at all times, and if it’s just enough for 1-2 people, it’s not a BULKY kit, especially if it’s brand new stuff, a new HD tarp in it’s package fits down the back of a hydration pouch perfectly and still fits the hydration bag, and a new plastic drop cloth and big survival blanket fit just about anywhere, add in a teeny bivvy bag and you’re in excellent shape. It all fits into a teeny bag, and leaves lots of space for the rest of the stuff you’re nuts to go without 🤪, a knife etc..
Awesome stuff as always Dave! Nice to hear Nick’s voice too! 😬😬 hope you’re doing well Hon!!
Great to hear that youre having a good morning! Thats very cool you have set up a tent this way before. We only need super shelters down south about three or four months of the year. I'm happy you liked it! Thanks for watching Ruth.
THANK YOU Very much Dear Dave waiting for your next video
You are very welcome my friend and thanks for watching!
I think there are so many log cabin shelters on CZcams because the thumbnails look great and they get a lot of views. -millions some times. That's fine for entertainment. I like to look at cool shelters, too. But there is a need for videos about survival shelters. Thanks, Dave & Nick for taking the time to demonstrate these.
Very well said Doug! Log cabins are fantastic but folks need to see what simple calorie saving options need to be utilized. Thanks for the comments and thanks for watching Brother Doug
lol good stuff brother . this is like 9 videos all in one . my favorite part was the end lol . cause thats what i would be doing to lol . i only got a hammock set up with bug net and rain fly . i would freeze to death in the winter but cant beat it for summer lol . and you already know ill watch what ever your doing . stay safe brother . ill see ya in the next one .
Ah well, like I said you gotta choose for your climate, season, terrain and environment. Take care brother and see ya soon!
thats me. once i found a hammock and a hammock bug net i dont like the ground any more. get some spring clips, wally has them up to 4 inch. then go to a seconds type store and find a camo comforter. king size. i tie two corners at the foot end and two at the head end then clip the sides to the hammock net. leave the air pocket and it will take the cold well. i am not going to try snow but there is a big difference in holding heat and also keeping the wind from stealing your heat.
Great video Dave as usual! Thanks for sharing your ideas with everbody.
You are very welcome brother Randy and I'm glad you liked it!
I can listen to you all day...keep it up my friend.
Thank you Darlene!
Another great video. Great information and entertaining as always.
Thanks Ken, I'm glad you liked it brother
shared
Thanks Brother
You are definitely ingenious! Great survival shelter information! Thanks Dave!
Thanks Marci! I'm glad you liked it!
I appreciate your good common sense approach to things Brother Dave. Excellent video! 👍🏻 ~John
Thank you Brother John!
No dear, no one thinks you're insane, apart from Nick 😂 But he'll be grateful one day, that with all that weight training you got by willing to carry all these shelters and stuff into the woods to please us all with another Great video, you're strong enough to carry him out if necesarry (when a camera hits his head or so) 😂😘 Again, so much usefull information, thanks Dave.
Thanks and I'm glad you liked it! Lol, so far no one's been hit in the head by a camera but anything is possible! Take care and thanks for watching
All of them are excellent, really enjoyed the video.
Thank you Sharon!
Great to see y'all! You and Nick are awesome. I love watching y'all. Sorry, I've been working a lot lately
Thanks Joel and it's always good to hear from you brother!
Best hour I’ve spent all week. Thank you for always providing fun informative content. 🤙🏽
You are very welcome and I'm glad you liked it. Thanks for watching!
Many many good ideas👍
Thanks Angela, I'm glad you liked it
I use a fisherman vest to carry my stuff in when I fish or backwoods walk, and they work great! Oh yes I use Industrial garbage bags, and brick laying line and plan on sleeping sitting up next to a tree.
Sounds great Jerry!
Dave: "check out these shelters guys"
The bugs in the background for an entire hour: "REEEÈEEEEEEEE!!!!"
Lol! Sorry but thats just the sound of a southern summer
@@Reallybigmonkey1 :-) *
Dave and Nick, enjoyed the video. Never too long for me. Nick you just tickel me to death picking in your Dad like that. We have giant spiders like that too here in the Cherokee Smokey Mountains. See them mostly in the garden. You two have a great Labor Day Weekend now...ya hear!! Ha!
Thanks Rebecca and We are glad you liked it! Oh we hate spiders too! Thanks for watching
Most of the time I learn something from your videos. Thanks for making them
Fantastic to hear that my friend!
Great Video Dave and Nick! Thank you.
You are very welcome and we are glad you liked it!
Great show gentlemen. Very helpful. Thank you for sharing these different shelter types.
Great video work Nick.
Have a blessed day.
You are very welcome and we are happy you liked it!
Thank you guys for your shows. You all are very good entertainment.
You are very welcome Ronald and we are glad you like them!
I love the windshield cover idea and the poncho multi use.
Thanks! I'm glad you liked that
We love the talk dave because you talk sense 👍👍👍
Thank you John!
Firstly, you love to talk, secondly, we love to hear you. There was so much information and excellent advice in this latest video that it could have been twice as long and just as interesting to watch. To me, these are the best type of your videos and I've learnt so much over the years from them. That shelter with the candle was something I'd never heard of before. Each of those kits were complete in themselves and I realise now how I hardly have any!! I really must sort that out! As always, many thanks for another great video from you both. You can, of course, keep the spiders 🕷️🕷️🕷️😃
Great to hear that Spencer and I'm glad you liked it. Numbers of kits add up with numbers of mode of transportation. Leave one in the jon boat, kayak, canoe, ATV ,camper wherever you go. Thanks for watching
Thank you so much for sharing these ideas and possibilities with us. This is a great video!
You are very welcome Beverly and I'm happy you liked it! Thanks for watching my friend
Some good ideas. Thanks Dave
Thanks, I'm glad you liked it.
... Always a good time.. Dave ,, the man who's mind never sleeps .... with all this unpacked ,, now have to go back to the house and come back with an ATV and trailer to load it all up to get back home ....
Thanks, lol. It took awhile to haul all this stuff out! Thanks for watching
Wow. I see I can maybe drop some weight out of my kit. My own kit is in an old nylon Military butt pack on a 2" belt with canteen, tube tent, net hammock (more for camp chair than bed), trash bags, knife, fire kit, TP, etc., etc. In the woods or just hiking, where I go this simple kit goes, over my shoulder to the head or around my waist!! Ya just never know when "stuff" is gonna happen. Great info. Thanks.
Sounds like you have a good kit assembled! I'm glad you liked the video my friend
It's always good to see you and nick those are good shelters I get the point you're making. a coffee and chef Dave video is always cool 😎 thanks for sharing brother.
We are glad you liked it Brother James! Thanks for watching
Great video Dave, some awesome point here. "Survival" has been glamorized a bit lately I agree. Its good that people are talking about it more, but only seeing it through rose colored glasses can be a bit deceiving. Keep up the good work!
Thanks Brother! I'm glad you liked it! Folks absolutely aren't talking about this as much as they should. I can't remember if y'all had a podcast on this or not but a Survival vs. Camping would be very interesting. Take care and thanks for stopping by
Great video
Thanks, I'm glad you liked it Hiram!
Well Dave I can listen to you all day there is a lot of knowledge there and if they dont listen they dont learn and they die plain and simple
Fantastic to hear that Roy!
Have mercy dem bug was LOUD!😂😂 Thanks for the ideas guys!
Oh man it's like this all summer here! Thanks for watching Mark
Thanks my friend. I appreciate all of the effort that you expended to show these off. Very useful info. Have a blessed Holiday weekend. John
You are very welcome Brother John and I'm glad you liked it! Happy Labor day weekend and may God bless you brother
I enjoyed the variety. You definitely accomplished your goal of stimulating thought about the approach to the subject. And I don’t get tired of hearing you explain. In fact, I wish you’d work in more stories about your camping days with your mentors and other unique experiences like “The Mystery of John’s Mountain.” I think I’ve listened to that one at least 8 times. Thanks for the content.
I'm glad you liked it Jerome! A lot of times in the educational type videos there's no time for old stories but, when ever I get around to camping this winter I'll tell a few more stories. Take care and thanks for watching
@@Reallybigmonkey1 I look forward to that.
Great video. What a thinker you are. Love you were with him Nick! Quite the variety.
Thanks Dianna! We are glad you liked it. Thanks for watching
Dave you've got to start your own line of bushcraft and survival gear! People will buy it! And I'm still waiting to win the lottery so I can fund your own wilderness TV show! Take care brother.
Both sound good to me!
Great !!!!!
Thanks!
I love your videos. Always a bit different than others and lots of ideas. I always look forward to your videos.
I'm glad you like them that much! Thanks for watching my friend
good video my friend, well done!
Thanks Jack, I'm glad you liked it!
Awesome
Thanks!
good video, practical info, great demonstration
Thanks, I'm glad you liked it
Bushcraft: green, brown & gray
Survival: yellow, orange & red
Camping: yellow, red, blue, green (all the teletubbies colors)
Lol, I like that
Love the last scene! Thanks, guys.
We are glad you liked it Greg!
Building individual wooden cabins in the woods is getting popular. Fine if your in a warmer climate for winter. Great Video Dave. Thank you.
And good if youre going to stay awhile. I'm happy you liked it! Thanks for watching Donna
Dave we are listening! That might be the most Nick has talked on a video! All great points. Thanks!
Lol, thanks!
Great options, I don’t carry large packs anymore, love the minimalist approach. Can carry all the survival items in one of those small packs. I have one of those military waist packs, I thinks is ideal. Combine it with the gear I’m carrying on my person, belt knife, SAN, small backup knife. I like a simple shelter set up. Thanks Dave and Nick for another great video . Alan R.
You are very welcome Alan and we are glad you liked it! I love the sound of your kit!
awww i get to finish out my work week with a Dave video! honestly i could listen to you and Nick all day while i work :) Lucky we live in NW Georgia, water EVERYWHERE... and so glad to see a shelter video. it's actually fairly cold here for many months and a good shelter and fire are essential.
Great to hear that and I'm happy you liked it Shelby! Oh yes, it gets cold here, especially overnight temps in the woods. Thanks for watching
Reallybigmonkey, the shelter King! Great video Dave.
Thanks Michael! I'm glad you liked it brother
Well done
Thanks!
Well done Dave…thank you for taking the time time to do what you do…
I'm glad you liked it Mark and I'm always happy to share!
Thank you for your thoughtfulness to consider so many options.
Very good!!
You are very welcome and I'm glad you liked it
