- Back in 2013 I did a video on my El Cheapo Heated Tarp shelter. The number one comment I got on it was what do you do if it rains or snows? I always replied I have a different set up and I'll show it one day. Here it is. Five years later. LOL. Heres the original video • El Cheapo Heated Tarp ...
Im getting multiple repeat comments on why not prusik knots/loops. I use the carabiners because they are fast and durable, they offer a total of four extra inches in width on the smoke opening and most important of all, anytime this is set up the roof almost always has to be shifted during set up or as rain is blown in from a prevailing direction. The shifting lines from end to end are often done with a tautline hitch so linear adjustment is a breeze.
Ever consider zip ties? They work just as well as carabiners. BTW, you taught me how to tie a prusik knot. Tried it out and it turned out to be a pain. No offense dude, but them knots required constant adjustment. Zip ties on the otherhand, set once and no worries!
Prusik knots do have there place in some applications. Zipties are awesome for semi permanent set ups.
I would think carbiner would be a lot easier for quick set up and tear versus zipties. Zip ties would be fine if you were leaving the shelter up permanently, otherwise I would day carbiner would be the way to do you don't have to cut the zip ties. Now that is just my opinion, because that way you would use less on set up.
Actually, my set up is permanent. I pulled a couple of maple saplings together into an arch and used zip ties to hold them together. That's the foundation for whatever tarp set up I want to do. I'm starting my 3rd season at that site but I need a new tarp. We had a couple of windstorms blow thru and it tore the tarp loose. the only thing still holding was the center point held by a zip tie. So it's off to Menards for some el cheapo tarps
Yep, and that's exactly why I use carabineers. I like your opinion, several others on here have something against carabineers. LOL
So I've been homeless for 2 years and Pismo Beach California now I'm kind of in the woods in Pismo Beach California and this to tarp or three tarp shelter you got that's going to be my new home so thank you brother thank you very much with a mixture of your other shelter tarp

I love the idea of being able to have the fire in the shelter, I have sat next to a cozy hot camp fire while winter camping and dreaded going to my cold tent to sleep. If you do burn a hole in the tarp you can patch it with duct tape or just replace the whole thing easily.

Carabiners, prusik loops or whatever it does not matter how it is secured it’s the function of the shelter that is the important stuff, if you use red clips someone will say yellow is better. That is a great shelter for a few folk to sit in and get warm and cosy (minus the spiders) your el’ cheapo shelter was the first ever video I watched of yours, since watching that and many other videos of yours I bought a sewing machine and now make my own bags and so on, and today I now know how to make a, lets say a “posh winter” El cheapo shelter

That's an awesome setup for a 10 day 4 person camping/hunting trip. Stay warm, cook and drink brews. It beats the fire outside the tarp setup, that's for sure.

Dave, I would really appreciate a video about the steps needed in a long term survival situation. I mean chronologically ordered steps that must be carried out to successfully survive long term. And showing, as you do, the honest and frank difficulties in doing that, and how to overcome them. That would be a wonderful video.

Dude, your videos are interesting. I watch them on an evening in bed and is so relaxing hearing your soothing voice my friend, I tend to fall asleep towards the end because its my natural sleep cycle so have to watch again in the morning lol.. A nice shelter which takes some time to set up but well worth the effort, especially for long term use like you mentioned. Much warmer than a traditional lean to shelter and with good airflow. Leaving one end open is key to not getting carbon monoxide poisoning through the night when the fire smolders and struggles to stay alight. ATB and thanks for uploading.
Thanks! I'm happy you like the videos. Oh yes, the absolutely beats a common lean to. It doesn't seem to matter how big the fire you have on a normal lean to, you're always battling the cold and the wind.

i think its great you and your son are into camping and survival . I lost my Son in 2013 ina boating accident while on a fishing trip. So I didn't get to do as much as I would have liked he was 20 when he passed he loved fishing and camping . So do as much as you can with your Son and Always tell him you love him. I can't stress that enough. You know all that though your a great father getting out with your Son to experience the out doors with each other.

I loved your "El Cheapo" back in 2013, and you have surpassed it with this one. A suggestion that I would have, would be for the top ridge line to be a little higher at the enclosed end so that the smoke has a greater chance of not getting in your eyes when you enter from the other end.

Hi Dave, You might wish to consider sweeping clear the tent floor area of all the fallen leaves and twigs. That might reduce the presence of so many spiders and other bugs. Also consider a bug spray applied to the outside of the base of the tarp up to no more than 6 inch's but all around. Still, you and Nick came through with "another exciting video!" Thanks again!

Hey, David. Use your metal spring clamps to temporarily secure the upper tarp while you run your guy lines. Once you get everything tied off, you can remove the clamps and make your final adjustments. Just a thought, from a fellow "Son of the South" (North Carolina).

That video that Nick asked about about the kid that lived in the hollowed-out tree is a book from 1959 made into a movie in 1969 called My Side of The Mountain. It's a fictional novel about a young boy who left Society behind and went into the woods and learn to survive on his own.
Now I remember! It didn't jog my memory at first because I thought it was a youtube video he was talking about. Not a for real movie.
Hello Dave, as an observer from afar, I have to tell you man, I really enjoy your accent. It's not so much your accent, but the words you choose, apply them and say them. It's the type of accident that says, I lived my whole life in a small country town in North Georgia. I too used to have the very same accent and miss it tremendously. I moved to central Florida back in 1980 and brushing elbows with all these transplanted Yankees and their entourage have lost my accident. While on vacation with my family, we stopped to eat in Rome Georgia. My family picked up on their accident right away. My youngest daughter who was seven burst out laughing and ask me "do you hear that daddy, is that a real hillbilly"? Much apologies had to be made, but those were the good old days. Anyhow, just wanted to say welcome back. Glad you got some other work load off your shoulders and back to making videos, enjoy your adventures my friend....... by the way I use that phrase"as an observer from afar"to get your attention and sometimes it works.

LOL, Well this shelter is usually done in the winter time when all the bugs are dead and you can be on the ground. I showed it kinda late, I ran out of cold weather. Man that Dakota pit tent cost a fortune. Im a el cheapo guy all the way now!

Hot air rises... Smoke mixed with hot air rises... Rising air will exit as at the highest point... So it will favor the ends VS the sides where it would have to travel down again before rising... Highest path of least resistance... LOL Thanks for sharing brother... Enjoyed... Peace...
All you stated is true but I have to clear something up. When this shelter is set up without the elevated roof and just open ends, it fills up with smoke in the top pretty bad. You HAVE to have that separate upper tarp elevated for the smoke to pull out the ends. Why this has to be? I honestly cant explain. That's just how it works for some reason. Must be cross draft?
With too broad of an area to leave from, no upward draft is created... IE: a downstairs room can fill with smoke even with a staircase leading upwards - but a fireplace, even as small as it is, wont, because of the upward draft in the chimney pulling the smoke away... So in your shelter, the heat pulling out the ends draws the smoke with it... Or absent the top, it is simply rising over a large area, the smoke isnt pulled, so it cools and hangs, and you end up with the "smokey room" above... // Sorry - thats long winded: By restricting where the heat can go, you create a draft or pull, the smaller the better, and the more it will pull... Large open designs will allow smoke to cool and linger without something to pull it out...
If you really want it to clear smoke fast, raise one end a foot and leave a small opening at the top (say 1' by 1')... On the lower end, leave the opening at ground level... And angle your top tarp the same as the two below... This will create a cross draw that should clear the whole shelter despite only two small openings... In theory though, it will draw as much cold air in as the other end lets out heat... so you might want to put the fire toward the low end and pull the heat past you on the way out...
Bumble Bee Junction Heat doesn't rise. Hot air rises, heat radiates. 😉
The smoke does rise. Yes, along with some heat but you also get radiant heat from just being beside the fire.

its youtube brother they let you know what they want you to know lol . i just got a rode mic mini it works with phone and the dsl cameras no batteries required works off the battery in the phone or camera . but it has a dead cat with it so it really helps with the wind and is a cheap mic if you use it with the phone you have to buy a separate cord to adapt to the phone . i think even with the cord it was only like 70 dollars . or so

Hey David,
I hope you are doing well today. I have seen many, many, vids where you are setting up a Ridge line or tying rope to a tree for some reason. In many vids you get bumbled up do to filming stress or just nature of the beast. The taunt line hitch is great, but one flipped loop and now it's an unmoving knot. I learned from corporal's corner to have Bolins on the ends of my rope hanks. Just prestage them for deployment. One wrap around the tree, pinch a loop through the Bolin and slip a tent stake or stick through to hold it. Bam. Super easy to set up and pull out the rod from the "marlin spike hitch" and its down. I've seen little kids of 6 Yrs old set them up at pathfinder camp. He teaches them to have a taughtline with Bolin, 2 pursic knots, pre staged and how to do a truckers hitch on the other side for super easy super quick set up. Anyway hope you and Nick are having a great day!
I usually cinch up my taut line hitches to trees and never had one come lose. Everyone does stuff differently. Thanks for watching man

Enjoyed the first build of this shelter as much as this one. This shelter is brilliant. May take awhile for me to build, but once I get the cord tie off down everything else will come together easy. Thanks brother.

I like your shelter - looks comfortable, dry, and well-ventilated. Nick is doing a better job also. If you would employ trucker's hitches and prusik loops you could cut 10-15 minutes off of the construction time. A prusik loop at each corner of the ridge lines and the center grommets of the top tarp would only use 12" of paracord for each attachment point plus it is adjustable in terms of tension. Enjoyed your video and your good ideas.

The knots you mentioned will work but with the variability of height and spacing of trees this has always been the most simple way for me to put this up and take it down. You also have to be careful to not tension the lines too tight or the wind may rip the tarps if they don't give. Thanks for watching

Hey there Big Monkey, the small bag you refer to is very versatile and typically used for "PERSONALS" such as shaving, bathing, small medical etc. items however, it can also be used for "other" needed small items such as weapons cleaning kit, sewing kit etc.I like to call it a "Versatiles Bag". Extremely handy for organizing the MANY small items we all have to deal with! Great idea with the tarps (my preferred method of shelter due to their versatility).....................VENTILATION IS KEY TO STAYING DRY, WARM AND COOL! First of all, much thanks for the concepts and skills you share in your videos. I prefer tarp shelters over tent/hammock setups. I have been searching for a means to provide heat in the winter for tarp sheltering. I can't stand camping cold!

the reason why you only feel wind in the top of the shelter is because the way you put the top tarp made a venturi it's also the reason why you can't really the smoke because it's suck up in a venturi and rapidly mix with a lot of air passing tru. really nice set-up by the way

@@Reallybigmonkey1 I live in Alaska, so shelter is a necessity. I don't believe I've ever been on a camping trip when it didn't rain or snow lol. Over the years I've had a great deal of fun experimenting with different ways to set up shelters and using different materials to get the configuration I want.
