- Theres an allure to camo and stealth. We often like to camp hidden from others. Sometimes we need to hide to capture photos of wildlife, in some cases maybe even in the search for Bigfoot? And for some folks, camo makes a fun game of hide n seek in the woods. Lets explore camo in this video. My thoughts and ideas on what works and what doesnt.

That "giant pocket" was a game pouch for rabbits, birds, and other small game back in the day. All hunting coats had them.
I've seen that on numerous vests that was lined with a waterproof style lining but this is the first time I've ever seen a cotton jacket with an absorbent cloth game pocket. I'm surprised it doesn't have a water resistant liner.

I heard this before. And I own a jacket myself that has a rabbit pocket. But honestly - don't dead animals bleed and or poop in that pocket? Why would you spoil your gear this way?
@@frankbunton5505 I agree 100% Frank. Game leaks all kinds of fluids and I wouldn't want that in a big pocket of my cotton jacket
@@frankbunton5505 The pockets had a rubberized lining. You could actually carry a half gallon of water in them.
Sniper veil is the only one we use for that purpose. It lets wind passes trough it and you can let it around your neck when it's cold. It doesn't slip as other materials do, so you can easily set it on any backpack. Just offer your back to the viewer et voilà.
Makes sense to me! The sniper veil is definitely a good piece of gear

For many years I have gone hunting deer or elk without hunter orange. Camo was my choice. I found it desirable to be invisible to my fellow man, as well as the critters I sought. Unless I hunt with my grandchildren. We then become neon signs. I won't risk their lives as I might my own. Thanks, Dave, for your insights into this topic.

Good morning, Dave. I hope you had a nice Thanksgiving. My favorite camo is a Real Tree leaf design (and similar). It blends well with the leaf litter floor and also granite boulders or ledge that we have in many places in NH. But mostly I I just like the looks of it.

Great video! I might have commented this on the camo panel video, but Mossy Oak(and some others by now) make a 4' x 12' camo panel for covering blinds. It's very light and sturdy. I've used one for years for stealth camping in the winter and haven't been caught yet. They make several types of camo for whatever season you need. They run about $25 but for people who aren't as savvy with a sewing machine, they'll work great.

I believe that here in the US the army is the only branch that uses the OCP camo and the Marines currently use the MARPAT camo. Great video, thank you

Great video Dave, I love me some camouflage.
A Marine buddy of mine told me to break-up the head & shoulder shape. So I took a boonie hat and a piece of netting from the craft store, tied some jute/twine in various earthy colors and made like a ghillie head piece. We used to test it out on each other to see if we could be detected. We also made full size ghillie outfits. It takes alot of time and is hot in the summer, but it was the most effective camouflage.
To your point about wearing two different patterns, my best outfit (for the desert) was wearing coyote brown pants and multi-cam top with my ghillie-boonie hat. It was very effective to mimic the desert (brown) ground and the greenish shrubbery.
Most of this was developed as my Marine buddy and his son would play airsoft with my son & I many years ago.

Fun video. I love camo. I think hiding your "shape" is important too. No straight lines or sharp edges. Those "fluffy" fabrics that have things attached and used for hunting etc are probably the best. Dont know what the official name is.but my son said its called ghillie suits

The natural cover greatly added to all of the camo types. Where cover was sparse it was much easier to see you. Also shadows seemed to help over direct sunlight.
And I think that the item that your sister gave you is a headband meant to cover your forehead and ears. I’m pretty sure I’ve seen skiers wearing them on TV etc.

Dave I must say I really enjoyed this video. I was thinking reversible jackets or an added liner. That would be a lot of work. However, when it comes to the panels it would be very easy to add a different pattern to the back side or some netting. This could add more options. Even inside the hats you could add a thin layer that rolls up on the back of the hat or lays inside the hat. So many ways to multiply the camouflage to the camo. Peace and Freedom 🇺🇲

@@Reallybigmonkey1 I do remember the one with the liner. If you make the bag for the panel a bit wider the liner will be a little wider but thinner but, you could stuff the bag and have a nice cushion to sit on.

Some really great camo patterns and some great ideas for other items to use as camo cover! The only other thing I would add is when hiding as you were (I know you were just doing it for examples) is to use the environment like trees, shrubs, etc and blend in with that or make your body shape a little distorted to break up what your body shape actually is so as not to be obvious that you are sitting there or stooping! Great show Dave.! Great camo collection. My hunting coat as a teenager was green and black, but it had a big pouch on the back that used for partridge. I really like that pattern on the 10X coat.

This is the most in depth video I’ve ever seen on different camo patterns and innovations. A mostly brownish mix of different shades works good here in West Virginia for this time of year. Come turkey season in the spring the the light and dark patterns of green is what hunters will go to. Mossy Oak green pattern is common. The woodland camo is also very popular. I really like the Vietnam era tiger strips. I’m a big fan of using the shamaugh or sniper veil with a neck gaitor and a wide brim bush hat. Another plus with the bush hat other than concealment is it good to keep the spider webs and twigs out of ur face while hiding in the bush, and always gloves. I really enjoyed this video, ur videos are always so relaxing and entertaining, thanks brother, take care of ur self.

I agree @ 23:16 this is a very effective camo combination. The poncho/netting at 25:59 isn't bad either! All in all, the lineup of poncho setups was very effective. Tulle is pronounced, tool, believe it or not... Isn't that cool, Tulle is another fabric tool for you to use, lol. The next thing you might want to check would be which fabrics are florescent under UV or IR light, if you truly want to be stealthy. Some dark colors can read surprisingly light under these two light sources, and they will stick out after dark. I really loved this video. Eyes open, no fear, and be safe out there.

Excellent and thought provoking video ! I've seen camo patterns glow brightly like blue jeans sometimes do from being washed in regular detergent . Washing with sport wash and spraying with U V shield will eliminate it . Many types of game like migratory birds especially ducks and turkeys can see color very well , especially if it's florescent ! Looking for unnatural outlines will help reveal people who are camouflaged . Natural foliage seems to be the most effective way to counter that when used in combination with camouflaged clothing ..at least to me , although it can increase noise . Appreciate the effort you put in your videos ! You have been a favorite of mine since I saw the first one long ago !

Much of what gives people away is noise keeping silent seems a real chore for most humans. As a former soldier who trained in camouflage a lotos it is based upon certain criteria. Shape, shadow, colour, texture, contrast, distance, tones.
A sniper or member of a team aiming to remain undetected in enemy territory who remove as much chance as possible of being seen by blending in a keeping silent. You may wish to gain intelligence and leave unobserved from a strategic point and get back without detection - keep noise and unnecessary movement to a minimum. Afterwards you can buzz on being so close to the enemy patrol you could have cut their laces or throat without detection or noise. Stay safe Dave. Another great video

Excellent video Dave. You sure put a great deal of effort into making this. The main thing I learned from your video is the importance of selecting the correct camo for the area you are in. If you don't, you'll stand out like a sore thumb. Many of the camos I felt just didn't break up your body shape enough but I certainly agree with you about the Mossy Oak at 23:09. That really blended well with your environment.The bug net, the poncho liner and the sheet weren't too bad either. It just really depended on what was in your immediate proximity and how you were standing.

The Multicam pattern with hood was the first setup that I thought was effective. The brim added a bit of useful shadow. The next one that took my fancy was the green mesh sheet you deployed where there were green fronds in front.

Good stuff- Ive used camo in woodland and arctic environments and no matter what environment your in, same rules apply with regard to blending into your surroundings and keeping a low profile behind natural concealment. The 3 main types of camo that I like is the old school BDU woodland, the multi-cam and the German Flecktarn pattern. Thanks for your vids and be safe out there-

Good choices. Dave wore a flecktarn suit several months ago and it was highly effective in hiding him in his demonstration. Another very effective pattern, I think, is the A-TACS patterns. There aren't any distinctive lines separating the various color shades.

Great Video, The item around your neck is a ear warmer I also so make a Gilly Panel out of fish net and strips of old Camo pants. I drape them around my Deer blinds. It works real well with the use of natural material stuck into the fish net holes. Have Fun in the woods.

In my time outdoors hunting, if I’m completely still (not even moving head) wild game will keep moving their heads while looking at me. If I don’t move and they don’t scent me, I can watch them for awhile. I’ve had deer and squirrel finally go back to eating or walking thru. I wear olive green pants and a green/black flannel and camo hat and sometimes gloves. I think movement and scent is really how they know I’m there. Wearing blaze orange doesn’t seem to affect them. If I’m on public land I wear something with blaze orange for other hunters to see me. Great video Dave, I can listen to you ramble on because you always teach me something new 🦃👍

Once in the fall we were out driving through the forest in the fall with all the colors. My dad was wearing an argyle sweater vest and khaki pants (this was in the sixties) with bright yellow, red, blue, green and purple diamonds. He got out of the truck, walked a few steps into the forest and literally disappeared. Who would have thought that something that bright and colorful would have provided camo.

Excellent comprehensive job with the camo. You effort is appreciated. Over the years I have collected numerous types of camo. It was very expensive. I always thought something lightweight to pull over your standard coat and pants would be the best. I like the sheets made into a poncho for quick camo and blind. Have you tried the ASAT patterns? I have to agree. The set up @ 23:20 was the BEST, although some of the poncho ones were nearly as good. My Dad took us out since I was a wee one looking for game, so my eyes are pretty good at spotting pretty much anything out of place. Guess I will get me a poncho to use when I plan my next nefarious outing!! LOL 🤣🤣🤣 Blessings Dave. Thanks for sharing.

It's all helps to a degree. Some more so than others. What really impressed me was how much motion effects visibility. Very important to remain still. And it seems very difficult to come up with pattern that works with completely unobstructed view but the better ones became effective even with light cover.

Single biggest giveaway is movement.
I know it’s simplistic to say and there’s more to it,but the best cammo in the world is rendered useless if you move about.- You can wear anything and many animals wont see you if you keep still,as long as you’re down wind.
Second biggest giveaway especially if hiding from people and birds is face not covered.

Great video, sniper veils are also in desert I am a fan of your panel idea. I caught myself on a trail cam at night and camo fleece appeared white in infrared, digital camo is best for that in my opinion, I heard thats similar to how coyotes see so I tested it.I hope you guys had a good Thanksgiving and have a good weekend.

That was very interesting Dave,and you sure just about covered everything,and the cover you picked as your #1 at the 23 minute mark,I agree you were almost invisible.Some stood out very obvious but like you say you have to break up your pattern of a human shaped object in the woods,deer and other animals know their turf pretty well and you have to beat em at their own game of camouflage.Thanks for the video and hope you had a great Thanksgiving,take care brother and thanks for taking the time to show us the many options.

Another good and interesting video Dave. Forces usually make the most of the terrain and when it comes to Camo they will use "dead space". It's usually darker, like the base of a tree with hanging foliage.

The French had a cammo pattern that the U.S.and South Vietnamese special forces modified. I spent a lot of time in the jungle doing bushcraft and the Tiger stripe is superior. I'm in the Mojave Desert now-being a student of the desert. I make my own shrouds from small laundry bags spray painted appropriately for my area . I use a common boonie hat with twine to attach twigs and such to. Thank you so much Dave.

Half my wardrobe is camouflage😂 I just feel better in my camo year round! Never paid much mind to hiding from game though, but crazy people and the occasional Sasquatch for sure!! Loved the gator as a hat idea

Excellent video Dave. Just remember, when camouflaging up, one must take into account his natural surroundings and have the ability to break up his own physical outline and stay in the shadows and be very quiet.

Hi Dave! This was another fun video. There is a reason we call it "Fun in The Woods", right? LOL. I am sure you have studied these scenes, so there is nothing new I can tell you about them. I will say my observation was that the face is almost always the giveaway. This really underlines the value of face paint and random shaped head gear, as you point out. Great video. Really interesting. I noticed how much the angle of the sun as it seemed like it was lower, and how shadows from the trees made a difference. Sometimes it even helped too, depending on the camo.

40:45 Near the end of the video you wrapped that camo around you and with that camo wrapped the way it was, reminded me of Return Of The Jedi (1983) when Leia was wearing camo and met Wicket. Except hers had the piece of it that covers her neck. I would love to have the one like she had in that scene!

Funny thing, all my hunting vests game pouches are a waterproof type material like polyester or nylon. The 10x jacket pocket is a soft absorbent cotton which I would find disgusting after putting bloody leaky game in. Lol. I'll use it for a survival kit.
