    Yamaha has taken oak to new levels of beauty, response, and projection with the Live Custom Hybrid Oak shell pack. Each 7-ply handcrafted shell in this series features an inner phenolic resin ply, chosen by drummers in blind trials, for a purer fundamental and enhanced dynamics across the kit. The Live Custom Hybrid Oak's outer oak plies have been treated to a Japanese uzukuri-inspired finishing technique for added luxury and elegance. Beyond its shells, the Live Custom Hybrid Oak features the very best of Yamaha's flagship hardware, including inner bass drum weights for heightened low-end response, single-post Absolute lugs for maximized shell integrity, and Yamaha's latest YESS III suspension system for a sweet, toneful tom sustain.

    These drums are the real deal. Of all of the amazing kits Yamaha has produced (including the top-end PHX kit) these have the most presence and unique tone of them all. I sold my Maple Custom Absolutes after getting these because they are SO satisfying to play and all of the finishes are both stunning and unique. In fact, my DW Collector's Maple/ Mahogany kit seems kinda lame and boring compared to these!

    • @robertacosta3134
      @robertacosta3134 Před 9 měsíci

      Wow, that’s bold selling the Maple Custom Absolutes. I’ve been looking into a used set of MCA’s, but these Live Customs are on my radar as well. Do you still feel strongly about these over the MCA’s? Thanks

    • @golferal
      @golferal Před 9 měsíci +1

      @@robertacosta3134 As good as the MCAs are/ were, the Live Custom hybrid oaks much better suit my average gig and are much less finicky to tune. There is a well documented issue with some of the MIJ Yamahas having tuning and resonance issues (seems to be especially prevelant with the 12" toms) that I suspect are related to the YESS and YESS II mounts. I've owned the Birch Customs, MCAs, and played on some 90s RCs and Live Customs and the hybrid oaks just have a little something special. Plus they look killer!

    I don't have a favorite drum brand but I've always been a fan of the quality and consistency of Yamaha, however this takes it to a whole new level. I have a Stage Custom birch with a 20" kick drum that I use at college and it does the job very well. I think Yamaha has done a great job with bringing in kits such as this, the reintroduced Recording Custom and Tour Custom to expand the line. I do hope however that Yamaha brings back or introduces something a little more price friendly. This kit is significantly upgraded from the previous Live Custom but the price is much higher now. I think that there needs to be one or two more kits from Yamaha to go in between the Tour Custom (which is around $1200-$1300 for a 5 piece kit) and this version of the Live Custom Hybrid (which is around $3000 along with the Absolute Hybrid Maple) as the old Live Custom was under $2000 as well and a few more snare drum options to really get more of the recognition it needs. Plus, more attention needs to go to their Stage Custom, Rydeen and Manu Katche lines to get those back up. Unfortunately, the new hip stage custom is more expensive than the actual stage custom so that's a decent drawback, but I would love to see some more love go towards the rest of the lineup.

    Reminds me of when Neil Peart went down to the Percussion Centre in Fort Wayne, and we tried out that set of Ludwig drums that were “Vibra-Fied”. They had a thin layer of fiberglass added to the inside of the shells giving them that punch heard nowhere else.

    I always liked Yamaha but the selection and availability has always been lacking. You kinda just get stuck with the shell pack basic configuration with zero options to add on drums. DW and Pearl do a good job of having options to add on. But they’re the only ones really. Which is a shame because add ons need to be available as non special orders. Sometimes you need that 18” floor tom or 8”. Sometimes the 4 pc shell pack just isnt enough.

      Yamaha is a Japanese company, as is Tama (Hoshino Gakki). The political relationship between the US and China is not the same as Japan and China. So when you say, "current politics" you would need to be more specific as to which countries you are referring to. Both these manufactures have recently moved almost all of their manufacturing to China. Neither company is going to be moving anywhere anytime soon. And, regardless of where these drums are being made, both companies are continuing to make fantastic drums, if not better than ever.
