  • It's May! That means it's Multiple Chemical Sensitivity Awareness month! Most of this month's videos will be about GOOD things that have improved my life over this last year, but first we start out with a RANT!
One of my fears came true and I was summoned for jury duty. Accessing the healthcare was a nightmare.
We simply must do better so that everyone can access quality healthcare and public spaces.

Turns out nearly half of the states in the U.S. have no bans on smoking in public workspaces. This seems wild to me. Something else to be fixed!

Wow, i'm so sorry they put you through such a nightmare! That's unacceptable that there were so many barriers put in place for you, and that they couldn't accept the original letter from 2013.
I just did jury duty last month, and I think if worse had come to worst, during selection in the court i was in, there was an option to stand with your number raised if you felt you could not complete your duties as a juror, and then later you would be called back to discuss your reasons with the judge and the lawyers for the case. You would be able to explain your limitations, and it's likely you would not be selected for the trial. BUT that's at my court, which also made getting an exemption much, much simpler than this, since I had to help my parents get theirs. And obviously even that one day of selection (especially in a crowded place with a long wait) would have been detrimental to you.

I’m so sorry you have to deal with all the stupid red tape on top of everything else! But so grateful they finally excused you!

Get a letter from your doctor for a reasonable accommodation, you would be in the ADA guidelines. Get a RESPRO mask with chemical filters, they're expensive but they work really well. They work better than my full face respirator with special filters. I have to wear my RESPRO to my doctor's office as they use plug ins, they also unplug them minutes before my appointment and then roll their eyes and do their kick down thing. I was called and filled out a form online and got excused in advance.

What chemicals are you allergic too?

That question is a slippery slope and hard for any of us to answer. There are no requirements for explicit disclosure on the label as to what the combination of chemicals creates as a reaction to their combination. Most of the chemicals used in products in the US are actually banned in Europe. It's usually the VOC's that close an airway down and cause the reaction. Those solvents bond with the proteins in our blood in the oxygen exchange for Co2 when we breathe. Once my lips go numb (even while masked) I need to vacate where ever I am or my airway shuts down. Even when I vacate it's time for the hives to start & they last about a week, along with the low blood pressure & high heart rate. It's like getting the flu on purpose. It's like living with a peanut butter allergy and society smears it all over themselves before they leave home. But- we're the crazy ones.
