  • Do you have a new baby Miniature Horse in your life? Congratulations!
Babies are definitely different than adult horses, and they need different considerations when they're being handled. Remember, everything is new to them, so we have to teach them what we'd like them to know!
My family has been raising Miniature Horses since 1981, literally since I was a baby, and our horses routinely grow up to be happy, well adjusted horses who have excelled in a myriad of competitive and non-competitive pursuits: from champions in the show ring to valued therapy horses.
Here's how we've always handled our foals, demonstrated with one of the most precocious we've ever had, our precious "miracle baby", Wish!

I just got a 4 month old mini weanling. He is not scared of me but likes to push on me with his chest and rub his head all over me. Is this an aggressive move? Should I correct this? He nips at me but I have taught him I don't like that.

No, it's a play or itchy behaviour, not aggression. Even behaviour we interpret as aggression in youngsters is always play. Horses just aren't aggressive to humans unless they're very scared. If you'd rather he didn't rub on you, you can simply start walking away when he does it, and giving lots of scratching and attention when he gives you a little space. He'd also benefit from a horse companion, especially one his own age, if he doesn't have one - then he can get all his rough and tumble play out with a more appropriate playmate than his human!

    Hej

Hi Kendra, I'm Jeannine Gruber and I've raised full grown horse foals but I just got a 2 month old foal miniature who already is 27 inches tall at 2 months old. The place where I got him from all the horses are unhandled and untrustworthy, I got a halter on the foal and I see that you think that is a no no. The foal is very sweet but mom interferes with any thing I do with the foal and I only have mom here for another two months. I need some help with someone who knows and raises miniature horses and doesn't just throw them in a field to breed like rabbits then expects these foals to be ok. He is fine as soon as I catch him and from the back forward he is great, I want to start to work with the hind end so I can pick up those feet because I know they need trimming but he is afraid if anyone gets near him but me. Can you please help.

oh, of course they need to get used to a halter and being led, I just don't think it's as important as making friends. The easiest way to get them comfortable with haltering and leading is to routinely halter and lead them in and out of turnout, or just out on a very short walk every day. Have someone else lead the mare and mostly let the foal follow and just get used to the halter and the fact that they're attached to you at first, they'll figure it out very quickly! As far as not being comfortable with others, while it might be more challenging during a pandemic, it is generally pretty easy to find plenty of friends and family who would love to come scratch the baby! The more people he meets, and realizes that they all are good for scratching babies, the less worried he is about strangers. For first hoof trims, I usually sit on a chair and hold them over my lap, but then mine are usually a week or two old at their first trim, sounds like he might be a bit big for that, but still, a cuddle approach might be helpful!

I have a 6 day old baby with her momma and she is soooo goosey! Momma is sweet with me but is protective of the baby. So I've been sitting with her in the hut and letting her come to me. Will she get more trusting as she gets a bit bigger? Its our first baby. We have several rescues so this is totally new for us! Momma came to us pregnant so we are learning on the fly. Thank you!

Yes! You are doing exactly right just sitting with her. Also spend lots of time grooming and scratching momma - studies have shown that the best way to get foals used to human handling is to let them see their dam handled by humans and comfortable with it. Focus on mom, and before you know it baby will get old enough to be curious and get her share of attention too! ❤

@@MiniatureHorsemanship oh good! Yeah momma and I are still working through trust. She was brought into rescue from a kill buyers auction. We got her last September and she was already pregnant (also had a foal on her which the rescue kept). I tell you what we've come a very long ways and she is super protective of this baby. I think the rescue said she was of the other foal as well--which is why they brought her to us initially. They couldn't mess with the baby when she was around and he needed to be weaned. So....I'm going to step it up and continue doing all these things that she likes and hopefully baby will continue to be curious ;) I'm really happy to find you! I will for sure be checking out your website. I just got to thinking this morning that I really need to be a step ahead on this. I don't want to enforce, accidentally, any bad behaviors. Thank you so much!

@@MiniatureHorsemanship we had a break through literally the next day. Nuggs is totally into scratching now and she comes when I call her. BUT I am thankful I watched your videos because she has also decided that her new teeth are meant for biting and her rump likes to hop around like she wants to kick me. I was so thankful I had just watched your video because I knew just what to do. Thank you! :) We are now BFF'S Nuggs and I. I told her we would be, ha! :)
