Thanks Kendra. I recently received my first minis...two from my cousin. The 13 year-old mare had laminitis pretty bad when my cousin rescued her. After painstaking and attentive care, Misty now has nearly normal hooves. My cousin cautioned that it would be easy for her to backslide, so I am kind of over-cautious, I suppose. The other is a 6 year old gelding who is very healthy...might be a bit on the 5-6 score end. They both wear restriction muzzles for the most part of the day, but get to free-graze in our pasture an hour in the morning and an hour in the evening. They get to share a flake of hay at night. We live in Texas, so there’s not a lot of cold weather here.

Great, informative video with correct information. I have had all breeds of horses for 40 years now, and have taken care of others minis over the years. Well, 4 months ago I rescued/adopted a chocolate palomino gelding miniature. Oh my goodness he needed everything- vet, equine dentist said he most likely never had his teeth worked on, he had huge hooks and ulcers in his mouth from 18 years of neglect... His doing well now, but the weight issue is Always on my mind to make sure they don't get too extreme.. They are such easy keepers, just looking at food and they seem to gain weight. The winter coat for minis is crazy, it's September here in California, and he already has the huge winter coat, even little feathers on his fetlocks! What you mentioned about the winter coat is very true, it is quite thick and can be deceiving to the naked eye, you need to feel their bodyweight with your hands. Thanks for the great advice!!🐴

I bought 2 miniature retired breeding mares from my neighbor and he told me to only give them hay because that’s all they’ve ever had. The vet has said there weight is good but definitely could use some more fat. I’m just not sure if it okay to give them grain if they’ve never had it before?! If you could answer this for me it would be so greatly appreciated!!!

It depends. If you are looking for a well trained, but not fancy one, they would cost maybe (CA) $400 - $700. If you are looking for a fancy show mini, maybe $1000.
