  • Freeman’s January 26 European Art & Old Masters auction offers 257 lots and features a number of interesting artworks, including what is likely the single largest offering of oil, watercolors, and etchings by Canadian artist Frank Milton Armington. Important oils depicting scenes of London, Paris, Jerusalem, and Constantine are for sale. All of the Armingtons were privately consigned from a single collection and have never appeared on the market before. Each of the oils - 15 in total - is in unrestored original condition and rendered in the artist’s delicate, impressionist style.
A number of fine 16th-18th century drawings also featured prominently in this auction, ranging from religious subject matter to genre scenes, landscapes, and Neoclassical studies. In addition, the sale includes a number of very good Russian artworks, beginning with a finely cast Prince Paolo Troubetzkoy and oils by artists such as Henryk Siemiradzki, Lukian Popov, Konstantin Trutovsky, Konstantin Gorbatov, and Petr Vereshchagin. Other standouts in the sale include previously unknown works by Lesser Ury, John William Godward, and Franz Richard Unterberger. Post World War II works by Auguste Chabaud, Edouard Cortes, Jean Dufy, and Jorge Gonzalez Camarena round out this fine sale.
