    Billy's daughters are Taylor Swift fans, so they're acquainted. Olivia Rodrigo has actually sung with Billy at a concert, and Billie Eilish is definitely a fan. See, the young ones are hip to the Joel! So, Billy's last full album of pop songs came out in 1993 and since then he's put out a classical album, compilations, and a single that he didn't intend to release (but was most likely pressured because of contractual obligations). So he wasn't exactly happy with that, and he wasn't happy making new music anymore, so he stopped, point blank. Until a songwriter/producer named Freddy Wexler approached him with a song that they could potentially collaborate on...and that is something Billy never does, big names have tried and failed to collaborate with him. But he liked this song enough to work on it with Freddy, and actually he thought they were going to give it to Adele. But Freddy convinced him to go back into the studio to record it. Long story short, it happened, and Billy fans all over the world rejoiced 😄

    • @SurvivorBri
      @SurvivorBri Před 5 měsíci +2

      There were two artists who collaborated with Billy - Ray Charles and Cindi Lauper. Billy and Ray recorded "Baby Grand" together and Cindi did back up vocals for "Code of Silence." She also helped him write it. That's a fun story. He hit a road bump and couldn't think of anything creative to write about. Cindi just happened to be in a room at the same studio he was at the time and he asked her for help. And of course, as everyone knows, Ray Charles was a source of inspiration for Billy.

      @etc7070 Před 5 měsíci +1

      @@SurvivorBri yes! You are correct. I should have said "rarely" instead of "never," but it was SO rare that it could practically be never 😁 Billy tried with other big names, but they just didn't work out. Like I just heard him say on Howard Stern's show, even Burt Bacharach didn't mesh with him.

He was true to what he meant and now, after 30 years of not writing. He comes out with this. AMAZING!!!!! This song is Timeless in the History of Music. Just understanding the song I mentioned above and understand this new song how perfect they are related is mind blowing. 99.9 % of singers will not do what he just did. I guess nobody is Billy Joel. This is Billy's first real popular music track since 1993. He released an album of classical piano pieces that was performed by someone else in the late 90s. A song was released that he wrote but had a different performer in 2007. And he released a few tracks he performed that were written by others, including the first performance of "Make You Feel My Love" which was written by Bob Dylan. This is the first track that he both did the performance and wrote the song (although the song seems to have been mostly written by Freddy Wexler channeling Billy Joel, with Billy contributing some and finishing it up.)

    Fantastic reaction. I love watching you ride the "Billy the Joel" train. To answer a question you asked.....Olivia Rodrigo has a song that includes the title of one of Joel's songs, "Uptown Girl". Billy invited her to perform at one of his MSG shows. He is ending a ten yr residency at the Garden. Over 100 sold out shows. I saw him in 22 at Notre Dame. Still rocking an almost 3 hr show. He has a really diverse list of guests at concerts. Miley Cyrus, Jon Bon Jovi, Olivia Rodrigo, Sting etc? Another question...he grew up in Hicksville and Oyster Bay. I have loved this man for 40 yrs. He's still got it at 74!!!! 🎉🎉🎉

    It seems like the song communicates a sublime depth, because when contemplating the current decline of music, Billy Joel, after decades of silence, understands the darkness to which the musical art has been exposed. He then concludes that the time has come to turn on the lights and once again radiates the brightness and dignity to the music of our present.

    His first song in about 17years. The music video to this song is the first music video he’s done in 30years. You really should look at the music video for this song also. It was very well put together. This song is basically saying “did I wait to long to make more music”. He wasn’t going to record this song. He cowrote it with Freddy Wexler and when finished asked him who was going to sing it and Freddy said you are. Billy usually only sings songs he wrote but loved this song.

  • @dswallen1

    Hey Britt. So there was one song released in 2007 that Billy himself didn’t push for release so this is HIS first single since 1993 when he released his final studio album ( although there was a classical album released a few years later). This has an authentic old school Billy Joel feel. It’s been long enough that the fans believed we’d never hear anything new so frankly he could’ve farted into a mic and we’d have loved it. But this is a great return to the studio. Of course he’s been performing live shows for his entire career. I saw him last year at Hyde Park in London and he was amazing. There seems to be a belief that the song is a metaphor for his pop/rock career but in an interview he said he could write it because he’s lived it, so I reckon it’s a straight-up love story. I could be wrong.
    You said we needed to have a conversation ….. there you go. I’ve started one ❤

    You’d be surprised how familiar the younger artists are with the older legends. Their music is timeless because it is GOOD music. Everyone knows who the Beatles were even though they broke up over 50 years ago.
    I agree with your assessment that Billy stayed true to his sound. It very much sounds like a classic Billy Joel record. Nothing bothers me more than artists that sell out by jumping on the trend of the day. Maroon 5 comes to mind. They started out as a true pop rock band and then became some sort of synth techno dance group.

    In ancient Greek mythology, the nine muses and daughters of Zeus King of the gods provide over song and dance. In the word, Music is the two of derived from the Greek word mousiest meaning art of the muses.
    Euterpe: muse of music or flutes, often, playing flutes
    This is the muse he worked with, or that worked with him

    ALL women : this is about Billy not giving up on a relationship
    ALL men: this is about his career in MUSIC. As he aged the music changed with no room for his perspective. However might there just be , might just be?? People will accept great music and not just the flavor of the day.

    I had to laugh when you asked if Olivia Rodrigo knows who he is because she's actually a massive fan! There's a really heartwarming video of them performing together at MSG from a few years ago, he brought her out during a concert and they performed one of her songs and his song Uptown Girl together! I would definitely recommend you check it out when you get the chance! I just discovered your channel and I'm loving your reactions to Billy!

    Obviously, the studio version is better sound quality but this gritty! He is 74 years old now. 50 years since he released piano man. And his music is still relevant. Timeless.

    Billy Joel is one of the most iconic singer/songwriters in music history. Picking songs to listen to is tough, because almost everything he's ever written has been superb. He's right up there with Elton John, who he did dual tours with for almost a decade. But he's most famous for:
    Piano Man
    Uptown Girl
    Pressure
    We Didn't Start the Fire
    Italian Restaurant
    She's Always a Woman
    Allentown
    The Entertainer
    Just start listening, he's got over a dozen albums, he's one of the highest selling artists in history. Listen and learn, you won't be disappointed.

    Yup, that was a great performance. Also, did you notice the cello player just behind Billy? That was Laufey (pronounced Lay-vay), she received the Grammy for Best Traditional Pop Album earlier that day. You should also listen to her. Street by Street, From the Start, Falling Behind, or for the season, Valentine. Love your love for Billy.

    Pleeeaaase go down the Billy Joel rabbit hole! I watch your channel, but don't normally comment. His "B" side, or album tracks were better than the "hits" that made the radio. Start in the 70s and work your way forward. Miami 2017, New York State of Mind, and James (all live from the Old Grey Whistle Stop). Watch those, and you can take it from there!

    I take this song as a question from billy himself. do we still want him, his writing, his take on romanticism? it can be be seen as a hope to rebuild a fizzled out relationship, but I feel as if Billy is asking us if we will accept him, his style. I say YES! bring it Billy!

    Sadly, Billy Joel has said that he really doesn't like songwriting. It's not enjoyable for him. This is in stark contrast with someone like Taylor Swift, who says she basically enjoys songwriting more than anything.
