    I just did this today on my 2007 gmc envoy instead of poking holes or risk of wrecking the wires it is much easier to pull the steering wheel. The shaft is notched so there is no way to put the wheel on crooked the wheel came off very easy with no puller all you have to do then is unscrew the two torks screws at the back and unclip the harness and push the switches out from the back making it very easy

    Looked at other ways to do this. Took off wheel and put switches in with no trouble in less than 1/2 hour... Easy to get a hold of plugs......

    Great video and great suggestions in the comments too. Going to do this on my 07 Silverado Classic soon. I have a Foxwell 510nt scanner that tests and clears all those ecm errors you had pop up, highly recommend it.

    use dental floss by threading in the middle of the wires on back of connector. Push the switch 1/2 way in the pull on the dental floss from both sides. it pulls the connector in till it clicks. then pull out the dental floss.

    The airbag will not deploy unless there is an impact which takes a very hard collision or if you short that circuit. Most people remove the airbag. There is a small hole on each side of the airbag. Insert a small allen wrench to release each side. You can then pull each wire for each switch and make them a bit longer which makes them easier to remove.

    Another way to do it as long as you can get them out with a pick is to take the new switch apart and then rebuild it in the steering wheel socket. I couldn’t get the lower ones snapped back in. So rebuilding the new one in the hole allowed me to snap the connector in and then get it reassembled.

    To make it easier, go to TRQ Channel/Page and look up this. Make it easier to get them all out. Once they are out, put all back together then re-route the bottom connectors, incase you ever have to do it again, but this time you can just replace the switches and don't have to remove air bag again.

  • @Onry1

    The first thing you did wrong was turning your ignition switch on with the airbag disconnected or out.
    You will always have to reset your airbag with a scan tool...

  • @RobPGamerVaper
    @RobPGamerVaper Před 2 lety

    I attempted this a year ago I was able to reconnect the top 2 but the bottom 2 suck
    Anyway I attempted it again because I wanted to replace my white LEDs with blue but even with air bag out no luck
    So what I’ll do is go to pick and pull and cut the connectors off another truck I’ll get as much wire as possible and then cut my connectors off and splice them nice nice so I’ll have a extra couple inches and not have to stretch the wires and incase I want to replace them or something again later.

  • @jeffescortlx
    @jeffescortlx Před 4 lety +4

    I think GM intended the official way of replacing the buttons is to not only remove the air bag, but steering wheel too. Once the wheel is off the back plastic cover can come off. Once that's out of the way you have all the extra length in wire you need.

    • @The_Active_Region
      @The_Active_Region  Před 4 lety

      I thought about pulling the wheel to see what that did for me but it was dark and I don't have the right puller. Since you do gauges and clusters where can I get the correct led's and new servos? Do the led's need resistors as well? I have a few noisy servos I would like to replace. You can email me if you don't want to get into it here.

      @@The_Active_Region any X27.168 stepper motor will be safe to buy (white with that part number printed on it). I like to use old school 5mm LED's. A lot of the pre-packaed 12v automotive led lights are too bright and use unreliable LED's. You'll want flat top, not dome focused lens, diffused prefered. I use 5mm with built in dropper resistor, makes for a clean install. But I purchase direct from a manufacturer in Shenzhen. But there are some cube LED's floating around the state's that work nice too.

    It's definitely a defect in the product. It's not unreasonable to expect those buttons to last for the life of the vehicle when they do so easily in others.

    • @The_Active_Region
      @The_Active_Region  Před 4 lety +3

      This truck was made in 2007. Leds were not all that common in vehicles at that time. Incandescent don't last forever. It is pretty common across all vehicles when they get up there in age.

      @jeffescortlx Před 4 lety +1

      @@The_Active_Region I wouldn't call it a defect problem, but engineering choice problem. They decided to use 3mm lamps. That small of a incandescent isn't going to have a long life.

      @@The_Active_Region - you said you replaced your last button about 1 1/2 years ago.
      I have a 15 year old BMW with the original buttons in it. The controls are still legible and the lights work fine.
      If you think that's acceptable, then apparently I'm the first one to tell you that higher quality materials exist.
      Sorry if I sound arrogant but this one is too blatant to let it slide. That's just junkie American made car materials. Even Japanese economy cars have more reliable control surfaces than that.

    • @The_Active_Region
      @The_Active_Region  Před 4 lety +1

      I thought you meant the bulbs. You mean the plastic wear. Yes that does seem a bit premature. And yes they could have made the materials thicker so that even wear would not much affect it. You are also comparing BMW to a GM product. Two different worlds when it comes to quality vs price when manufactured.

    • @techelectricfuture3094
      @techelectricfuture3094 Před 4 lety

      I mean the quality of the button from a practical standpoint meant to include finish and deliver the features intended when manufactured.
      There are 2008 - 2012 edition BMW where the interior trim finish wears off prematurely and looks ugly. I mentioned economy Japanese cars as well in anticipation of the BMW vs. GM argument.
      Since you're entertaining the topic.... Do the controls wiggle or creak when applying a side to side motion 90° to the direction of intended movement on the old and new controls?
