    My Dad bought us the Hitchhiker's Guide game new in the box in 1984. I was 8 or 9. It came with all these crazy accessories, like a bag with pocket fluff and cardboard Joo Jantha sunglasses. But the game was utterly impossible. Couldn't get past the Babel fish until Prodigy message boards came along; someone posted a walkthrough that we printed off on a gazillion connected, perforated pages on a dot matrix printer.
    The other impossible game was Discworld. To this day, when I can't make something work IRL, I say, "That doesn't work," in my best Eric Idle accent because it's CARVED INTO MY BRAIN.

      I thought that Discworld would make this list. I had it on Sega Saturn but never clocked it. It was one of those 'throw logic out of the window if you want to solve the puzzles' games.

I asked him what his secret was and he said his mom said "if you put half as much time taking care of yourself as you did those damn Sims you'd be a great man" so he litterally started to pretend every day of his life was a Sims game and went to college, studied bathe for imaginary points. His wife has no idea he sees his life and kids as mere characters in an rpg who he is getting Stat boost on. Lol to this day I look at his ig when he's on vacation for the third time this year thinking... Maybe I should too lol

    My childhood was defined by the game "Zack and Wiki: Quest for Barbarous's Treasure", and it's a game that I really wish more people knew about (seriously, more people should play it!). It's a point-and-click puzzle game for the Wii (it got ports on the eshop later on) in which you play as a kid with a magical monkey companion who can turn into a handbell. When you ring the bell, it turns any living creature in your vicinity into an inanimate object that you must use for the puzzle. Interesting concept, right? I got it as a child, and never took the time to wonder why it was listed as one of the top 10 hardest games made for the Wii in so many lists.
    Oh. My. Gosh. I was a fool.
    So essentially a majority of the puzzles you're working on require as much logical thinking as humanly possible, because if you think there's a possibility you'd die from doing something, then YOU'LL DIE from something. Glowing eyes in the water? Don't even click on it. Glittery dust on a skull? You die instantly. Monster yawns? DUCK FOR COVER.
    Turn on the airplane when you first walk in, not 40 minutes later when you need to escape. Look up first if the bat is really a bird, because using it in your concoction as a bird will result in a 10 second countdown timer. Don't touch the painting, there's a piranha in it. Everything is trial-and-error.
    Each level is essentially a Rube Goldberg machine of animate objects, and if you're in the wrong place at the wrong time, even if it's literally just standing on the right of the death trap instead of to the left when you press the activate button, you die and get sent back to the beginning. Each level, to one who's played it before, will take about 25-50 minutes to complete. For people playing it for the first time, at least an hour and a half, if not more, plus 6+ deaths per level that send you back to the beginning.
    Oh yeah, and if you launched the mast at the squid at the beginning of the level when he was looking for you and you played the rest of the 40 minute level... well, you needed that mast, so guess you'll die.
    The two levels "Operation: Takeback" and "Treasure Island" took me days, if not weeks (depending on my mood) to complete. I literally memorized every single step in both levels as a kid because I loved the satisfaction of playing something straight through that took me SO LONG to complete! ...Except sometimes certain levels change at random, so good luck with that.
    It requires a LOT of patience, a LOT of walkthroughs, and A LOT OF DEATH, and it is SO worth it.
    That game destroyed me. I freakin' love that game.

  • @Gunman610
    @Gunman610 Před 5 lety

    The worst thing about Infocom games was how easy it was to make them unwinnable. Sometimes you wouldn't even know what you did to make them unwinnable (like, in Planetfall, you'd put electronic key cards in the same bag as a magnet and, when it came time, you wouldn't know why they're not working) or you'd do something early that wouldn't screw you sideways until near the end of the game (frotz me, from the Enchanter trilogy).
    The babel fish puzzle was hilarious precisely because it was like that. Trial and error (as long as you saved your game at the right time). However, Infocom doing it constantly was just a pain in the ass.

    For me it's RIVEN: THE SEQUEL TO MYST. That game was impossible simply because I just couldn't figure out the internal logic of the world, so solving puzzles was something I just couldn't do.
    And this was well before the internet, so I had to actually order a playthrough book, which cost me $45.

    Workers And Resources: Soviet Republic is like a blend of Factorio and Cities: Skylines. You have to build factories and warehouses, then manage resources, imports, and exports, AND maintain your population so you have enough workers to remain productive. Then they added a tourism industry and added a whole other layer of complexity.

    The second Command & Conquer game Tiberian Sun had an expansion called Firestorm. (guess calling it Shitstorm wouldn't have sold as well) At any rate, the 1st mission involves capturing some protesters without killing them. Since all of your units automatically open fire when they get in range of an "enemy" this was basically impossible. Don't remember if you could at that point order them to hold fire like in Age of Empires or not, but after failing this C&C Shitstorm mission 20-30 times, I ejected the disc, snapped it into tiny pieces and threw them and the box in the trash.
    One of a very few games ever to "win" the snapped disc award.

    The King's Quest series was maddening but I'm with Jules on this. Text based games are probably the reason I have very little hair left :/ Zork was a favorite. To be honest, games we played back in the 80's were all pretty difficult for the most part (and extremely immersive), because they didn't hand hold and you typically had to map your way (in quite a few games) with graph paper. Good times ;)

Me and my dude used to take turns playing and we would both get wrecked everytime. What are your thoughts on the new battletoads game for Xbox? I’m hyped for it but not gonna lie I was slightly disappointed when they revealed gameplay of it. I’m not a big fan of the art style they chose and idk I just thought they were gonna modernize it but instead it’s basically retro style just like the old one

    • @hepwo91222
      @hepwo91222 Před 5 lety

      @@jeremyroberts8822 obviously Battletoads was always a ripoff of TMNT, but was far more complex, challenging, and diverse in its gameplay. The original NES game I got to the last level legimately but using warp zones, but died early on. I used a game genie to beat the game, so I never beat it legitimately and I played it and practiced a lot. Loved the game, a game for the time it came out was ahead of its time, but its difficulty is what holds it back for me from being an all time classic like Megaman 2, SMB3, or Legend of Zelda. As for the new game, we'll see, not a fan of the art design, maybe it will grow on me. I never beat any Battletoads game as I couldn't beat the SNES or GB games either! So I hope it is challenging, but fair.

    Super Ghouls and Ghosts. Couldn't beat it until I got the SNES mini and abused the save feature. And even then I had to redo the whole game because I didn't know you needed a particular item - which is a random drop - to beat one of the bosses.

    Hardest time i've had in a game was the Hard difficulty in Fall Of Cybertron and the last 2 missions in the Musha campaign of Dynasty Warriors Gundam: Reborn which were 8 stars rating that forces hard difficulty, where you can get insta-killed by named enemies, and couldn't be reduced until the level was beaten.
    Ended up using the Buster Gundam and spamming my SqSqSqTr combo to charge my aerial special which i also spammed.

    The musical genres in their hardest difficulty. Guitar Hero, Rock Band, Beat Sabre. I've seen people master ridiculous songs but I don't possess the audio-visual acuity to excel at these games, my hat is off to those who do.
    Rayman 3 Boss Fights are the closest I've gotten to being good at musical skill games, there's an odd synergy there between platformer and timing your actions along the level's track.

    DK64 the game its self wasn't hard if you were at least semi familiar with Rare games but it was so tedious, you had to collect golden banana's, on top of that you had to collect individual specific character colored bananas, some doors could only be open with this person, some bosses could only be fought with this character, on top of that the only way to get to the final boss is by collecting two separate coins which can only be found by playing the 1983 game jetpac and the original Donky Kong in game.
