  • Do You Need a Passport to Go to Mexico?
Yes. If you are a U.S Citizen, you’ll need a valid passport book with enough blank pages to go to Mexico, in general.
You'll need a passport, whether you're traveling by air, land, or sea, to travel to Mexico.
Don't have a passport? Don't worry, we've got you covered.
Our passport application services make getting your passport to Mexico effortless. We'll provide you with everything you need to get that passport right at your fingertips in no time.
Do I need a passport to go to mexico
Do I need a passport when flying in/out of Mexico?
Yes, as a United States citizen, you must present a valid passport when flying in and out of Mexico.
There are no exceptions to this rule. Passport cards are not accepted when traveling by air.
You will also need a "Forma Migratioria Multiple" or FMT when flying into Mexico. You can obtain an FMT from an airline or at any port.
There is a small fee associated with the FMT. This "tourist" fee is typically covered when you buy your plane ticket to Mexico.
People who travel by air will receive a stamp proving they are traveling legally and have a valid FMT.
Do you need a Passport inside 8 weeks?
Passports and Visas.com will help you with your passport application. It's easy, painless and fast.
Do I need a passport when traveling to Mexico by car?
Yes, as a United States Citizen, you must present a valid passport when traveling to Mexico by car. Passport cards are also accepted when traveling to Mexico by land.
Similar to when traveling to Mexico by air, you will also need an FMT or "Forma Migratoria Multiple."
When traveling by land, you need an FMT if you are staying more than 72 hours or traveling beyond the "border zone."
Do I need a passport when traveling to Mexico by Sea?
Yes, just like when traveling by land or air, you will need a valid United States passport when entering Mexico. You can also use a valid passport card if you do not have a passport book.
One exception is traveling on a closed-loop cruise that starts and ends in the United States; you do not need a passport. On a closed-loop cruise, United States citizens can use any government-issued ID with a photo and proof of citizenship. Proof of citizenship includes a birth certificate or naturalization certificate.
Do children need passports when traveling to Mexico?
It will depend on the method of travel.
If you are traveling by land or by sea, children do not need a passport. On land and sea, children under the age of 16 can use their birth certificates, naturalization certificates, or certificates of citizenship to re-enter the U.S from Mexico.
However, when traveling by air, children of all ages are required to present a valid passport book.
Remember that the age cut-off for children traveling by land or sea is 16 and not 18, which is customary in the United States. Be sure to get a passport book or card for any children 16 or older.
As a precaution, if your children do have passports, always carry them with you when you travel to Mexico.
Does my Passport have to be valid for 6 months to travel to Mexico?
The current rule is that you may use your U.S. passport for travel to and from the United States within the validity date displayed on the passport. That said, check with your airline as many still implement a 3 or 6 month rule, meaning the passport has to have either 3 months or 6 months of validity remaining at the time you enter Mexico.

I live in California & drove to the Tijuana airport. I even parked my car in the parking garage for 6 days! I flew Vivaaerobus, checked my luggage at the ticket counter, they ask for your ID or passport. We handed them our DL, they checked the bag and printed our boarding passes. Going through security we handed them our ID & boarding pass. We flew from TJ to Cancun.
Going home, the Cancun airport, same process. As long as you are flying within Mexico you are perfectly fine.
At the border, we handed CBP our ID’s they asked if we brought anything back, said no, he replied enjoy your night.
Please ask me as many questions as you like, I was extremely nervous booking everything & not knowing if it would work but trust me, you are ok to fly within Mexico without a passport.
On every Mexican airlines there is a documentation needed to travel clause & it states for foreigners flying within Mexico you can use an official Id.
Happy Traveling! Enjoy Mexico! It’s a beautiful country!

If you are a US Citizen and drive or walk across you can just go with a DL but coming back in is the real issue. I recommend making sure you have a passport and if not have at least a copy of your birth certificate and your DL as a minimum otherwise you are subject to a fine to enter back in technically. If you are nice CBP can let you return to the US on a verbal warning. If you aren't and they are still patient they may have you formally sign a document to show you've been warned and that next time you'll automatically be fined. Avoid dealing with all that and have your passport when possible. I am a US Citizen in San Diego and have family in Mexico right across the border and cross weekly fyi.

If you are just going across the border from the US, then no. You don't need anything to just go across the border. You need FMT or Visa when arriving to Mexico by plane from another country or when traveling into the interior of Mexico.

    • @chaolan77
      @chaolan77 Před rokem

In MX they call it FMM (effe emme emme). I spoke with a bunch of very fluent Spanish speaker US immigration officers speaking in English who where referring it to it that way to. It's forma migratario múltiple .. but everyone abbreviates it and the local police refer to it as a "permiso" which you should have it on you at all times 'cos I hear you can be detained otherwise. Um.. Well I'm not a US citizen so things are obviously different and they vary depending how you enter the country. I bring a laminated copy of that FMM along with me around my neck with house keys and a VISA debit card for emergencies. My maestro MasterCard was rejected a lot in my first week strangely. I wouldn't recommend you take your passport cos it's super easy to leave behind. (as I did in my first week.. a kind teen ran after me shouting "señor!! senor!!") 'cos I was the last customer in the quilt store. A colored photo copy should generally servise. And businesses appreciate and sometimes expect you to go make a xerox copy of it, so carrying a copy along with your accommodation details helps a lot. Oh and mx passport sized pics with your hair behind your ears taken in front of a white only background too. Also when signing stuff they don't like varying signatures either. I don't know if you can PM here but I'D LOVE to know how you go with dental work and how costly it is and the quality. I hear it's real cheap if you ask for a cheaper option. I haven't had any work done ✔ yet but a couple of places I stuck my head into passing by said that they accept USD which is convenient. Also many small bills is preferable to paying with big bills. Close to the border be careful with people coming up to you asking for $$$, selling their last prized possession or offering to escort you to pharmacies, motels, restaurants. Never open your purse/wallet in front of people if unnecessary. And any wearing anything that gives you away from a mile away touristy like fanny packs. After darkening my greying hair and beard, I definitely feel I fit it and feel more like a local. TEFAS buses are pretty nice too. Well, probably too much info but I like to pass on what I've experienced. Good luck!
