I always like hearing this speech to Ichigo. He’s not a psycho like Kenpachi who enjoys narrowly winning and taking damage and what not but he still does enjoy fighting. You don’t enjoy being powerful if you don’t test your powers; when you’re strong there’s satisfaction fighting others who are strong. The biggest example is actually in his first battle with Kenpachi when Zangetsu walks up and asks “Do you want to live, or do you want to win.” And Ichigos response was “Just fighting has no meaning, just living has no meaning… I wanna win!!”
Oh, I forgot about that conversation. It really ties in with what Kenpachi sait to Ichigo here, in this episode. Good point! -Ana^.^
I love hearing a fresh, early series take on things. I watched these episodes SO long ago. My friends and I had so many ideas about what was going on and where this was headed. Love these kinds of discussions.
I love hypothesizing about what's going on, even if I'm wrong a lot of the times, the one time I get it right is so satisfying. This anime is gold! - Ana^.^
The original title of the series was Death and Strawberry. Strawberry referring to Ichigos name and hair

Ichigos name means "number one guardian". The old man can represent then honorable side of warrior(the honor to fight for others). The hollow can represent the killer instict and the enjoyment of wanting to gain power after being in battle for so lon (the hunger to fight for yourself alone). Ichigo needs to understand them both.
Oh, that's interesting about the bame. I never took the time to look into the meaning of it. As for the meaning of Zangetsu and the hallow, yeah, I agree with that. They are two sides of himself, he needs to acknowledge them both equally to reach his full potential. -Ana^.^
