    We so enjoy your tree identification videos. I know what the mature bark looks like, but have never seen a young tree. Identifying the useful trees as we clear parts of our land for agriculture and animals is critical. Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge. 🙂

    I'm impressed!!!
    Do you harvest on the tree or use drop clothes and harvest the fallen ones???
    I'm praying for your persimmons harvest and that you only get light rains, so sad to see hundreds of burst open persimmons.

    Persimmon is also a weather forecaster. When you cut it open there will be a shape that looks like a knife, fork, or spoon that indicates the winter coming up. I don't know the meaning of each utensil.

      @jawjagrrl Před 6 lety +1

      Pat Skelton I was taught that a spoon means lots of snow, fork is a mild winter and a knife means ice. Been pretty accurate for us.

    I have one that for the nine years that I’ve lived here barely had any fruit. It had an oak tree and a couple other trees in close proximity to it. I cut them down and now the persimmons are so plentiful the lower branches are nearly touching the ground. I have two others in the same situation and I’ll be clearing them out shortly. I did not know about the vitamin content, guess I’ll be making some preserves this fall.

    We have a wild persimmon tree .It only produced once. Someone told me there are male trees and female trees. Have you heard of this? There has to be both in your area for fertilization.

    • @jawjagrrl
      @jawjagrrl Před 6 lety

      carol parrish we only have one that I can find on our land, but it produces every year that we don't have a late frost. We do have Male and female muscadine vines though - one we were sure was Male surprised us this year and set fruit for the first time in years.

      @trl30215 Před 6 lety +1

      You are correct - the native wild persimmon (Diospyros virginiana) is dioecious - meaning there are male and female trees. Some folks graft limbs from the female trees onto the males & vice versa to ensure pollination and fruit production on all trees.

    Mr. Danny we were wondering what those were all over our property! Looks just like the tree you describe in this video!

  • @jawjagrrl
    @jawjagrrl Před 6 lety +1

    We have one extremely tall on our property - lots of fruit this year as well. We often lose setting fruit to late frosts. We love reading the seeds for winter predictions.
    How do you store and use them?

    • @DeepSouthHomestead
      @DeepSouthHomestead  Před 6 lety +1

      We separate the pulp from the hull and seed and freeze the pulp.

    • @jawjagrrl
      @jawjagrrl Před 6 lety

      Thanks! Now that I know how easy they are to propagate, I'll try and start more with the seeds we don't use for forecasting.

    My Mother used to take us kids and go get them before they were ripe. She laid them out and allowed them to ripen. Then we ate them! If we didn't do it that way, old man possum would eat them all!!

  • @jumpoffa5011
    @jumpoffa5011 Před 6 lety +1

    I've never seen a persimmons tree in my life until my next door neighbor put a tree in his yard. Over the years I watched as the red fruit would appear and the crows and other birds would have a feast on the fruit. One year a branch grew over the fence and I was able to watch as the fruit grew and dropped on my side of the fence. I never tasted a persimmons much less how to eat it. I had to look it up on the internet. I learned you can eat them like an apple, so I took a bite. It was delicious.
    My neighbor never took care of the tree. I guess he considered it a nuisance because he never harvested the fruit and allowed the birds to eat it. I asked if he would be willing to share some of the fruit, but I really got a straight answer from him, such are neighbors in California. They tend to stick to themselves unless you have something they really want.
    Anyway, I went to Home Depot to see if I can get a tree of my own. It took 15 months to get one. It seems they are a specialty item and you have to special order them. So I finally got one. I planted it in my back yard and in the next few years I too hope to have my own fruit.
    I learned that you can dry them and eat them like apple chips, you can of course eat them like an apple. So I will be looking to see what more that can be done with persimmons on a long term basis. Perhaps some of you can come up with some ideas that you are willing to share.

      We had coyotes that chased a skunk for 500 feet and it was getting sprayed. Only thing left of the skunk was the white fur stripe down its back. Had to have be very hungry to eat such a horrible meal. The pasture stunk forever seems like.
