  • Full Western Movie, Full Length Cowboy Film, English: Tell Them Willie Boy Is Here (original title), 1h 38min, Drama, Western, 1970.
In 1909, when young Paiute Indian Willie Boy returns to his California reservation to be with Lola, whose father disapproves of him, a killing in self defense takes place, triggering a massive man hunt for Willie.
Based on true events, Tell Them Willie Boy Is Here, tells the story of one of the last Western manhunts, in 1909. Willie Boy, a Native American, kills his girlfriend's father in self defense, and the two go on the run, pursued by a search posse led by Sheriff Christopher Cooper.
    Director: Abraham Polonsky
Writers: Harry Lawton (book), Abraham Polonsky
Stars: Robert Redford, Katharine Ross, Robert Blake
Tell Them Willie Boy Is Here is a Technicolor movie released in 1969, based on the true story of a Chemehuevi-Paiute Indian named Willie Boy and his run-in with the law in 1909 in Banning, California, United States. The movie was written and directed by the once blacklisted Abraham Polonsky, who, due to his blacklisting, had not directed a film since Force of Evil in 1948.

PLOT (Wikipedia): The film's story revolves around the Paiute Indian outlaw Willie Boy (Robert Blake), who escapes with his lover, Lola (Katharine Ross), after killing her father in self defense. According to tribal custom Willie can then claim Lola as his wife. According to the law, Deputy Sheriff Cooper (Robert Redford) is required to charge him with murder.
Willie Boy and Lola are hunted for several days by a posse led by Cooper. Willie manages to repel the posse’s advance when he ambushes them from the top of Ruby Mountain. He only tries to shoot their horses, but ends up accidentally killing a bounty hunter, resulting in another murder charge.
Days later, as the posse closes in, Lola dies by a gunshot wound to the chest. It is left deliberately ambiguous whether Lola shot herself in order to slow down the posse's advance or whether Willie killed her to keep her out of the posse's hands. Cooper is inclined to believe the latter and then goes off ahead of the posse to bring in Willie dead or alive. As soon as Cooper catches up, he comes under fire from Willie, who is positioned at the top of Ruby Mountain. Cooper narrowly avoids being shot on several occasions.
In the film's climax, Cooper maneuvers behind Willie, who has donned a ghost shirt, and tells him he can turn around if he wants to, which he does. The two pause before Willie raises his rifle at Cooper, who beats him to the draw and shoots him. Fatally struck in the chest, Willie tumbles down the hillside. Cooper picks up Willie’s gun and finds that it wasn't even loaded, making it apparent that Willie deliberately chose death over capture. Abashed, Cooper carries the slain outlaw the rest of the way down Ruby Mountain and delivers him to other Paiutes, who carry the corpse away and burn the remains.
When confronted by the county sheriff, Cooper is told that the burning of Willie's body will ruin the people's chance to see Willie in the (now-dead) flesh, denying them the ability "to see something". Cooper retorts: "Tell them we're all out of souvenirs".

Everybody deservse better than to live in a reservation..And yet what is more sad to me is that they have allowed their spiritual believes..rob them of their inner power...Because the Spirit of life is allways within men and not in clay or flesh...Believing that being disconnected from the land of their ancestors is so strong with in them that is is killing the emotionally and spiritually..leaving walk around like zombies( spiritually dead) Realizing that the Spirit is allways within them wherever they may go is what will give them back the wings to soar like eagles free and powerfull wherever they are. This proves how strong beliefsystems( vibrations of thought and emotion) are..

Willie Boy's marker is located on Ruby Mountain, off Dixie Mine Road off Old Woman Springs Road (247) North out of Yucca Valley. Been past it a hundred times, never knew it was there.
Sad story. Hunted down like a dog just because he loved a woman.
He was a local legend where I spent much of my chilhood. My best friend was a Morongo Indian. Dirt poor. I used to go out into the desert and pretend I was Willie Boy escaping the whites. My friend would be the Sheriff. He always caught me, but I sure learned a lot about the desert. It wasn't exactly the best jungle training for Vietnam, but the fieldcraft experience was invaluable.

To be honest, I wasn't raised to see race or color, or discrimination in that way.

This is an underrated film that was released at the end of a tremendous decade of upheaval. I have watched it 3 or 4 times and I think its very well directed and photographed, the cast is fine especially Redford and Clark, and the editing is adroit. It is based on a true story and it actually does that story justice. The relationship between Clark and Redford is complex and well written and they both deliver strong performances. Amazing that Ross started her career with Butch Cassidy, The Graduate and this film.

A bit ponderous but along with other good films of the era it has to be credited with helping to bring about a sympathetic attitude to the plight of native Americans who suffered terribly at the hands of the whites. Willie could have been played by an Indian but I doubt audiences of the time would have been quite as receptive such was the prevailing mindset of the time.

I don't think it would've made audiences any less receptive if he'd been played by an Indian; I just think there were very few Indian actors (if any) who auditioned for the role. Acting looks easy, but it's really a very difficult skill to do well.
This is why I don't mind when white actors and actresses play people like me (which Hollywood has done throughout its history, even using brown makeup and colored contacts and, in the 1960s, sometimes even entirely prosthetic eyelids).
It would be awesome if there were actors and actresses of every race, but ultimately what matters is if they do a good job of capturing the audience with an empathetic performance.
I only ever play extras, I don't have the skill to play an actual role. And that's fine; everyone has different gifts in life.

It's interesting that Redford and Blake get top billing here, but have only one dialoge sequence, if you can call it that! Redford gave an interview to Joyce Haber in June of 1967 indicating that he took the starring role precisely because it met with his social concern, "It concerns the Indians." He signed for Universal, "on the understanding that they would use an authentic Indian. Then they signed Robert Blake." Redford was being sued by Paramount at the time for pulling out of a movie called "Blue," so probably did not want another law suit on his hands for this one.

Really great movie. Willie wanted to live s free man and die like one. He had the chance to kill the Sheriff and the others but he didn’t do it. They should have left him alone.

Last tank crew in Viet Nam. One black guy and two Indians and the white guy me. What a privilege! Semper Fidelus! Now they talk about systemic racism? What fools!!! What Bigots!!!
This was one great movie! The ending was appropriate. The taking of a life is a something that affects you to the core.

But how could it end otherwise is my query.
It should have gone to court (white mans) or council (native American).
I'm not sure how the Native Americans deal with murder, (the initial murder being Lola's father), and if that was self-defense on Willie's part or not isn't clear, but certainly if it wasn't self defense, Willie would know in his heart that there would be a reaction. And even if it was, he probably didn't trust a fair "trial" because so many white people didn't like the Indians no matter what.

Very cool! Never realized this was a true story. I actually live in Victorville (mentioned in the movie) and we're about an hours drive to the Morongo Indian reservation/Banning.

Great movie, of a not so great subject. I can relate to the racism depicted. I can relate how my late grand father, over one hunred yrs old, was so bitter at the way he was treated. I can relate how my field worker parents described racism in America. But...My parents stopped being angry, as they saw their children grow into profesionals, and racism crawled under a rock. They broke out of the stigmas, and retired in a million dollar house. My dad was still illiterate. No doubt, sick criminality occoured on both sides, in this movie...And especially in my fam history...My relativezs are the most violent folks you will ever see.
