McLaren Crash at $99 Ride and Drive

  • This happened a few years ago on a $99 driving experience. The customer piloting the McLaren shouldn't have a license, and the instructor in the passenger seat got lazy or shouldn't have been an instructor. Either way add everything up and you have a practically totaled McLaren 12C in a parking lot.

    After the wicked under-steer just prior you'd think the instructor would wake up a little. The fact that the instructor said floor it so many times makes it 100% the instructors fault IMO. The acceleration alone would be overwhelming to most (member of the 200hp or less club here). This driver clearly had little idea how to drive properly and listened to the instructor implicitly despite not having the skill/experience to keep up with it.

    Driving a 12C one-handed. On a course designed to experiences a performance car's capability..... moron.
    I hardly even drive highway with one hand, unless I have to change gear, and my car has half the horsepower of that thing. Take a fairly well-balanced car (even a slow one) with a neglected front suspension down a twisty but rough road and you'll understand why being able to control the car at all times is important. You see people these days buying and driving supercars that would have a hard time maintaining traction on a slightly moistened go-kart track with a 12hp Briggs under their throttle just because cars have so many mandated electro-nannies they think the car will save them from themselves if they need it. Guess that's why Dodge gives away a track training session with every SRT car they sell nowadays (even if practically nobody uses it).

My instructor was doing the whole "floor it, floor it" thing, but not only was he wearing a helmet and ensure that I was driving with two hands, but indeed he policed where my hands sat on the wheel.
    Also, I didn't even know how fast I was driving until I got home and looked at the gopro footage. You're right, it was a comedy of errors on both parts.

      If the driver purchased insurance for the car (generally a couple hundred dollars for the drive) the insurance company will cover it. If he only spent $99 on the package though, I seriously doubt he is also paying the extra for insurance. If he didn't purchase insurance, he is liable for the damages.

    • @TheCarCrazyGuy
      @TheCarCrazyGuy Před 7 lety +63

      No company puts their car in jeopardy relying on the driver to buy the appropriate insurance. The car is too expensive to take that risk. The driver may only have to pay for the deductible if any.

      Mostly Insurance. Rob's rates may go up slightly and he will have to ether eat the small increase or increase prices, which would put some of the burden on consumers. Also anyone who uses this insurance company is ultimately effected by the loss in a minuscule way. The instructor is in for a big loss opportunity wise as this is now associated with him and his brand.

    Life for my family 'cause man, these God damn food stamps don't buy diapers

    For me to want to say in one spot, another jam or not

    To formulate a plot fore I end up in jail or shot
    Success is my only motherfuckin' option, failures not
    Mom, I love you, but this trail has got to go, I cannot grow old in Salem's lot

    I had a great instructor at the track at Vegas. I am a confident driver with a good amount of both real and simulated (full racing rig) racing, so I effectively know the ins and outs, and just need to seat time to get great laps. Regardless, we went out in the Cayman S, and that car was super easy, no problem. The Aventador on the other hand, my instructor was good enough (and recognized my abilities to read and navigate racing lines) that he had me push the car around corners harder than I would have done on my own, at least for another 20 or so laps. On a tight right hander, he was able to direct me to counter the understeer, which felt different than my experiences in FWD cars regarding understeer. Same basic principles, but that AWD system in the Aventador relies on constant control of balance, otherwise the understeer is ridiculous (and I'm sure oversteer is a real thing in extreme cases too). Either way, I was lucky to have a good instructor who pushed me harder than I though I could go that early on, with zero issues and lots of fun.
    My experience in the Elise in Cancun on the other hand, that guy wouldn't let me rev past 6000rpm on the straights. Let me tell you, for a car rated with a 4.9s 0-60, and an engine that is only powerful up top, made for a slow time. On top of that he just let me drive and never got me to push it harder, not like in Vegas. BORING.

    As an autocross nerd who's witnessed similar incidents, I would also point to course layout as a possible exacerbating factor. I know, for example that the infamous Eddie Griffin Enzo crash would have been easily preventable with a change in layout to not put a jersey barrier right outside of a tight turn following a fast section. We can't really see the course layout from the video, but I'd be curious if that was a factor, or if this guy ended up WAY off course in order to hit something.
    The sanctioning body I run with most has very experienced course designers, and while accidents still occasionally happen (you can't out-design stupid) it's an incredibly low rate / vehicle runs attempted.

I don't think they have control over that youtube decides on a video by video basis whether to give you a skippable ad or not and that depends on the type of content in the video as well as the personalisation algorithm that takes into account what content you like as well as where you live

    I'd done the "exotic driving thing about 10 times on a couple of different tracks and a good instructor is key to having a good time and learning how to drive an exotic car anywhere nears it's limits. This is a good example of why you really should have a good instructor if you're going to drive an exotic like this. 1st clue the instructor didn't have a helmet on even before the "student" was driving with one hand. Not sure who's driving experience company this was but if I was the owner I an assure you the instructor would never work for me again.

There's just nothing to be gained, everything to lose. Believe me, the first few years you've got your hands full just learning to drive the line, hit the apex, and keep both goddamn hands on the wheel. I mean folks, watch Mr Spaghetti here, he still flips his hand over and grabs the wheel from the inside! Even a guy with his experience we have way, way, waaaayyy more things to teach before ever getting to "floor it". Good call, Rob. Now about those hands….

    I have had lots of professional track driving instruction. One day I thought I could instruct my other friends on the track. Boy was I wrong. You really have to control what people are doing. The guy I went with wanted to show off and I felt instantly shady. We almost wrecked but I didn't feel comfortable commanding some guy I don't know that well how to drive. I was there to give pointers, then all the sudden I am in for a shady ride with some newb. I learned my lesson. I let actual instructors go out with people.

  • @wtfudc
    @wtfudc Před 7 lety

    I think the driver share more responsibility. After all, he is the one behind the steering, he is the actual decision maker. It's like flying a plane, air traffic controller instruct the pilot to fly toward and lineup to the runway for landing, but the decision to land or not is in the pilot's hand. If the runway is unsafe due to weather etc, pilot make the ultimate decision to land or not. ATC is like a tool to assist the pilot. Does it apply to this case? Instructor did encouraged him to floor the gas. But he didn't FORCE him to do it. It's a common sense to slow down to a turn, he is behind the wheel, he is the one who decided when to start slowing for the turn. I mean if your instructor tell you to crash into a wall, do you follow his instruction? No, none of us would do it. A person with common sense would stopped and Not to hit the wall?
