- The 2003 6.0 Powerstroke had a very distinct sound. it has been long sought after to make their 04-07 Powerstrokes sound like that or even A LBZ or LLY Duramax. We are here to tell how you can make your truck sound like it!

Oh so you have an early 04 truck with an 03 motor I’ve worked on a couple trucks like that it was a split year for fords and the early 04 had an 03 motor and the later 04’s had the new style 04 engine, it was a crazy year 😂

one of the weirdest thing I have to keep in mind when ordering parts, usually easier to ask (at parts stores) to just get the 03 parts and return them if needed (hasn't happened yet fingers crossed)

I got My 2019 6cyl base trim Dodge Journey last Feb 26 about three weeks ago.. I got it at 30 miles only now has 1k miles. It makes turbo sound when I accelerate at 35 mph to 40 mph and 55 mph to 60 mph and 65 mph to 70 mph. I don't know why it's doing that but, I Love the sound, I only drive windows closed because still smells brand new but I can still hear the sound. :)
Ive bought an 04 f250 off my friend. Has this whistle. Real loud actually. This vid explained why its so loud. Has no clue. Neighbors hate me hahaha

I had an 04 with a 4inch straight pipe from the turbo back and it just sounded like an air compressor, not much of a whistle. an 03 6.0 with the SCT insanity tune and 4 inch exhaust was the best sound ever.

My 04 got really loud 1 day & the whistle was insane. Sounded freaking awesome. Then I realized my exhaust pipe rusted out. Once I resolved that the whistle went back to normal & wasn't as loud.😅

I have a 2004 that whistles like crazy I can’t imagine the 03 being any louder lol. I have a 5 inch exhaust and my turbo is way louder
Many of the early 04 turbos still had the "2003" turbo, so that is why you have a loud one my friend.

I had an 03 and that thing was loud. I have an 05 now and while it's not as loud as the 03, you can still hear mine about a block away.
I have the 02' , international Dt444e/7.3cu in. and it spools like a son of a gun. I didn't hear it very well until I took off all the extra exhaust and muffler. Now I have about 8 ft of exhaust pipe. It goes from 3.5 to 4" about halfway.
That straight pipe really helps that sound!

Isn't any noise at all a sign of turbulence? Seems they made it smaller to be easier to rotate under exhaust gas pressure, and added more vanes to reduce turbulence. I get why it's not a good idea to machine the resonator ring, since all that does is create turbulence at the intake side, making the turbo have to work harder, so it makes sense to smooth out airflow on the exhaust side too.
Can you make that whistle sound on a 08 6.4 diesel?
Mine started to whistle when my exhaust snapped under drivers side. Left it for a while until I fixed it now it’s silent again

I've always wondered could you come even close to this level of whistle on a built 454 or a high reving boost happy ls? I know it's still gonna be much less boost than a actual diesel. I just wanna know hoe you could get that insane noise on a street/strip gas build

video idea, what makes the stock/stock like 6.0 turbos produce the distinct awesome 6.0 V8 growl that changes with a non vgt turbo.
The "throughty" Exhaust note at idle comes from the position of the vanes. The whistle at idle comes from the vanes being closed. Different tuners have their own preferences. We could make a video on it though, good idea!

Unfortunately, Unless a truck comes from the factory with a VGT Turbo, you cannot retrofit one on. This is the case for the 7.3

Can I not just install a 03 turbo pedestal and then just get an 03 turbo and install it that way on my 06 Powerstroke, I mean I work on powerstrokes all day and the only difference is the mounting spots on the exhaust housing and the way the pedestal is shaped
I have an 07 6.0 with stock exhaust and plan to purchase your KC 03-07 Balanced Assembly Kit this week. I'm only wanting to add the 10 blade 'whistle'. My diesel mechanic suggested we also straight pipe the exhaust while doing the KC 10 blade kit but I'm not wanting to make the engine significantly louder. Is a straight pipe necessary if all I'm wanting to achieve is the higher pitched jet like whistle your 10-blade Balance Turbo Kit provides? Is it counter productive to leave on my stock exhaust with the Cat and Muffler when installing your 10 blade kit? Thank you and great video!
Hello! Even with a stock exhaust, the 10 blade upgrade will still give you a noticable whistle. It's difficult to discuss sound levels because we may have different opinions of "loud", but if you would like more information contacting our customer service team will be the most beneficial.

All turbos whistle, some more than others, a lot of the noise is "silenced" in the exhaust silencers. Straight pipe it if you want to here it roar and whistle. (generally any turbo car not specific to these engines)
Its true you can hear some turbo noises on most turbo set ups. But, there is no non-VGT turbo that even comes close to producing the JET like sound that a 2003 6.0 powerstroke makes. There is something unique and loud about it.

hey pal does the company borgwarner have any turbos that are designed with this type of turbine to produce a fun good turbo whistle? seems like most borgwarner turbos ford uses for there cars at least are using the quiet ones
Since most borg warners are non-vgt, Most of them have an average turbo sound. Borg did make a VGT for the 6.4, but a compound turbo set up quiets down any VGT Whistle

Not sure about that engine, but i would imagine its a different turbo set up. Try putting a 6-8" exhaust tip on, and that's a good way to hear those turbo noises.

My question is what is the sound the turbo makes or where does it come from when it hits around 2k rpm right after it spools? Not the famous 6.0 bark but right before it. My truck doesn't do it (I have an 07, stock turbo w/ 10 blade, sinister intake, spd tune, 5" straight pipe, etc.) but all my friends trucks do.
What sound are you referring too? I have 07 myself...
@cjchico I’m not 100% sure about what sound your talking about but if I’m taking a guess. It could be ➡️“Compressor surge”⬅️ it’s when air pressure gets stuck in the intake after the throttle plate closes so it has no we’re to go but back into the turbo. That could be what sound your hearing from your friends trucks...and if it is, I would recommend getting a “blow off valve” to let the air come out of the valve instead of being pushed back into your turbo. I hope this helps. If your unsure what I’m talking about go on CZcams and type in Diesel compressor surge. Ps. Some people call it other names but the true name is compressor surge. 😃

@K F every vehicle has a throttle plate when your on the gas and when your off it’s closed. it’s not just for diesels it’s any type of vehicle. I’m trying to figure out what sound is a 2k rpm
