    A lot of people think Steve’s reaction is bad because he starts ‘criticising’ her choice in women. As someone who is queer, if I came out and I got this reaction, I would feel so much relief. Steve isn’t criticising her. He knows she’s terrified, and he wants to reassure her that it’s okay, and he starts making fun of Tammy to show her that she deserves way better.
    I just really love this scene because I hope my friends will have the same reaction when I come out, and I just feel comforted by this.

    This series is set in 1985. A time when being openly gay was extremely dangerous. And also a time when TV and movies started challenging the idea that being gay was somehow wrong.
    Robin represents that. A wonderful, quirky, lovely girl that is struggling in her loneliness about being gay, about wanting someone to love...about being accepted.
    And there is Steve, one of the biggest jerks from her school, turning out to be a damned good friend. And she is TERRIFIED that he will reject her friendship, that he may even attack her over being gay (which happened and still happens today)...she loves him AS A FRIEND...and she is scared.
    And Steve simply accepts it. It takes a few seconds to understand it. She may be the first gay person he ever met. And he just...accepts it. When so many would not have, Steve make a Muppet joke and accepts her.
    That is why in the end, Robin gets Steve a job. She will now defend that doofus until the day he dies. Steve protects the Party, but Robin protects Steve. Because he earned it.

On the one hand, Steve has come such a long way from the arrogant, judgemental d-bag he was in season 1, so it is totally in character that he would be so accepting of Robin regardless of her sexuality or the fact that she didn't reciprocate his romantic feelings for her. On the other hand, he probably understands on some level that coming out to someone (especially back then in middle America) is / was a pretty big deal, and ripping on her choice of crush is his way of showing that nothing has changed between them. Without explicitly saying so Steve is showing Robin that he accepts and supports her, because that's what friends do.

      You sure? I didn’t sense any real implications of her being a lesbian at all. Not like she should’ve worn a sign on her chest exclaiming her sexuality, but I honestly feel like the character would’ve remained relatively the same if she was straight. It’s not a bad thing that they added an admittedly “gay” character to the roster, but I feel that they should’ve done it in a way that would actually impact/explain the decisions she makes over the course of the show, not just so that she could turn down Steve.
      Hopefully in the fourth season they’ll actually build upon her sexuality and properly implement it into her character, but I just feel like the way the “big reveal” happened could’ve been better.

    • @JetDarknessable
      @JetDarknessable Před 4 lety +356

      @@swissidol8403 The way i see it, it changed her and the relationship she had with Steve.
      For example, it shows the struggle she had with her sexuality possibly affecting her friendship with Steve, because he could judge her or being so heartbroken.
      Sure, she didnt need to be gay for the Steve rejection thing to work, but i think it was a clever way to do it. I mean, Nancy already dumped Steve cause he wasnt her type, if the same happened to Robin, it would be kinda boring.
      I also think it was meaningful to her, because it adds to her personality. The whole season i thought she liked to tease and mock Steve in a way of drawing his attention to her, kinda like "notice me" way. So it works like a semi plot twist, if you will.
      And yeah, it wasnt explored a lot, but it didnt needed to be. Shes a secondary character on a pretty large roster, and sexuality is far from the main focus of the plot.

    I think the biggest reason for his sudden change as that he was the popular kid in school, none of his friends were LGBTQ he thought only the weird kids were.
    And now he’s become friends with someone who was unpopular in school, realized how cool she is and how popularity doesn’t mean anything, and now realizing that Robin is gay he’s gonna support it because he cares about her.
