LYRICS
now, the prodigal son was a forward child, his mind was not to obey
but after he left his father’s house he thought he had gone astray
i believe i believe that i will go back home
i believe i believe that i will go back home
i believe i believe i that i will go back home
and be a servant of the Lord
his father saw him coming he met him with a smile
he threw his arms around him saying this is my darling child
chorus
the prodigal said, i searched for true religion, but to peace and no faith could i find
until i came to a little place called Bakersfield, that eased my troublin’ mind
chorus
i wandered into a tavern where a music band was playin’
the steel guitar rang out so sweet, i feel like i was prayin’
i asked a comely waitress, is this a new teaching
she said there is no God but God, and Ralph Mooney is his name
let me empty your ashtray, Mr. Mooney, if the drunks interfere i’ll be sad
but just as long as you sit there on the bandstand and play your guitar like Buddha, i’ll be glad
the father asked the prodigal, did you smell the sweet perfume and hear the angel band?
he said, dim lights, thick smoke, and loud, loud music is the only kind of truth i’ll ever understand
the prodigal son
Ry Cooder’s latest album, The Prodigal Son, is all America, our spiritual, hopeful voices, our raw cries and our sly provocations, voiced through the songs of the Pilgrim Travelers, The Stanley Brothers, Blind Willie Johnson, and Ry Cooder himself. This is black and white gospel church music, our own history of the spirit, sounding completely fresh and contemporary, framed by Cooder's expressive vocals and graceful, elegant guitar work. Aided by his son, drummer and chief collaborator, Joachim Cooder, The Prodigal Son is a deft commentary on our ailing moral state. This is music for these times, a fearless dive into the country’s soul and the man, Ry Cooder.
For nearly 50 years, the immense scope and influence of Ry Cooder's music has perhaps been felt as much, or more than heard. As musician, producer, songwriter and sage, the Santa Monica, California native has explored music and culture from across the city, the state, the country and around the world.
Over the years, Ry Cooder has received various awards and accolades such as:
2017 - BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards- Lifetime achievement
2007 - Americana Music Association Lifetime Achievement Award Instrumentalist
2003 Grammy Award (Best Traditional Tropical Latin Album) - Buenos Hermanos,
2003 Grammy Award (Best Pop Instrumental Album) - Mambo Sinuendo

I'm 81 years young and still rocking mainly in my rocking chair. Hi from Australia 😎🎵🎶🎵🎶
Rock on my Aussie mate, love having you express yourself with the rest of us! Old Man meself in the American south.
Hi mate, saw him play in Perth in about 1982 ish for three hours and it was all acoustic- riveting bit of a shame at the time thought it might get electrified at some stage but really didn’t matter.🎸🤗😁👍
I'm only 75 years but i move my leg on this groove and i'm happy!☺
Me too mate... throw down the zimmer frame and get to it!
Ya high here too 🇺🇸✌️
Listening to Ry for damn near 50 yrs . Just gettin better
Bop till you Drop was my intro.
like good French wine😃
j'ai 73 ans ,et cette musique me "transporte tjs autant ....
longue vie à toi mon "frère" de musique
There is no age limit for these kind of music. Music like these keep me alive. When you die, music stops; that is scary.
Ry Cooder is the best guitarist most people never heard of.
That's true and it's very odd! I do my part though, sharing far and wide. I've adored this man since the 70's.
I ain't most people
I concur.
Nah. That would be Danny Gatton.
Ry is arguably the greatest slide player tho.
Music/art has a lot to do with your age. Being 59 I dont know many people that never heard about mr. Cooder.
Happy 77th Birthday Ry Cooder 🎂🥳
Thank you so much for your amazing music!
🎶🎸🎶🎶
I was a real prodigal son biblically speaking, the Lord Jesus led me in my troubles to this song and I knew I was forgiven preacher Ry Cooder thanks for your message brother I am back in my Father house Amen!!!!!!
Best place to be!
AMEN!!!!!
AMEN!
Halleluyah.
I would replace Ralph Mooney with Robert Randolph in the lyrics. Although I would have loved to see Mooney play.
What a great sound! If this song doesn't move you...... your either deaf or dead!
I first heard of Ry from the movie "Southern Comfort." I didn't know who that guitarist was till I mentioned it to my guitar teacher at the time, back in the 1980?'s, something. And then again in the movie Crossroads, which made Steve Vai so famous for his amazing arrangement, and performance. Anyway, I started following Ry, and his amazing playing style. I discovered a bit of recordings, but never to many videos since CZcams was invented. This is truly one of his latest, and greatest performances. He is a one-of-a kind guitarist. I'm so glad to see that there are many more videos out there. Ry is a goddamn living legend. Please keep posting them!
And that, people, is why I have worshipped at the feet of this genius for 52 years !!!!
ditto my friend, he is a legend and I would consider it a privilege just to carry his guitar case for him.
@@GetsumJ I have listened to his music since the 1970s , I love his work he also does a great film score
That is a long time to be so near someone's feet...
The other players are SO sensitive to what he needs for backup. A master class for any aspiring musicians with ears!
All musicians need good ears & timing. Most peeps don't even know Ry Cooder. Their loss. He's bad ass and has many talents/outstanding.
Now that's how it's done. Sounding good lads.
First heard Ry's music in the 60's with Taj Mahal and others. His soundtrack score for LONG RIDERS blew me away and every single LP, CD or recording he's ever published! His open tunings are a thing to behold, but of course he's a genius of so many genres of music. Think Cuban music, Caribbean music, Rock and Blues and he's been there and done that! An American music icon, one of the most innovative artists to ever have given us his music. Thank you RY!!
With you two hundred percent
😀😀
Check out Paris Texas. On u tube.
Amen to that 🎸🎸
Memo from Turner and soundtrack of movie Performance
He's not a genius in any of those other genres, he's just given them some publicity. And even in American music he's done plenty of stuff that's not so great.
Nobody wants to talk about the saxophonist comping like a pianist with those harmonizers? Never seen or heard anything like it. Wow
Love it!
I like it too... would love to hear some Mississippi saxophone in there, too.
These guys sure can rock da house, sax & drums nuanced, restrained & funky, true harmony...Ry Cooder's thang I guess.
Yeah man, what a badass!! ❤️
cole glasscock I think it’s Sam Gendel.
I remember seeing Ry Cooder with Captain Beefheart at Carnegie Mellon University I'm guessing in '71. He was the first band on the card that night but I always remembered his impeccable style. A great artist
At 77 I just discovered Ry Cooder. Love it!
It's never too late to discover Ry Cooder !
@@francoisebeylie2923 I just discov
Aren't you glad you lived long enough to experience Ry? Hope you live to 100 and get to experience many more personal musical discoveries. Check out Sonny Landreth and Roy Rogers also.
@@timontide6404 Good !
Listen to My name is Buddy. Ry made music supporting unions and this cd is a masterpiece..as well as ALL his music!
His sense of melody and timing is just supernatural - he instinctively knows exactly what note to play - and sometimes more importantly, what note not to play! Inspiring.
UFO'S have landed in Rylands back yard(Chaves Ravine?) or was it Roswell/Tonapaugh Ca.??
it's commmmming mates-tick tack /tick tok what the hell-them REDS never came out from under the bed-should have held the line at the Chosin or Elbe or someplace hahaha ??Damed Ruskies
Precisely put. Absolutely phenomenal talent - peerless as far as I'm concerned.
But what's going on with that synth-sax? It's horrible.
There are guitarists. And then, there is Ry Cooder.
He has got a sound like no other, every guitar players quest right there.
Rolling Stone rated Cooder #8 all-time best. Preposterous. Beyond magnificent there's no rating for that degree of skill & talent.
Man the deep groove on this track is something special.
Indeed !!
A music giant.
Can't stop watching this! Once a week. Feeds my soul. Thanks Ry and your awesome band.
Ditto with a Capital D 🎯
His son, Joachim, on drums I believe...🤔
Agree I can’t stop watching! ❤
The best video I have ever listened to on CZcams
everybody on this channel, if you haven't seen Southern Comfort, the soundtrack is so great...
Ry = Keizer.❤. Godd#mn that I have to admit it! Five stars.[❤].
Whoo! When most artist struggle to stay relevant in their sixties, he's still killin' it!
Ry Cooder blew by 60 a long time ago. He's 75!!!
My Brother, he was in his 70's on this recording. Rock on!
@@jamesspalten5977 Rye a fait comme le bon vin , il s'est bonifié avec l'age ,ce qui parait impossible!!!!
Showing the way for those with ears to hear it.
I like him even more 40 years later
Me too
I've been a fan for many years. I remember going to see Streets of Fire at the cinema, just because Ry did the music. Happy days.
Wow they got this ol Granny dancing, incredible!
There's only one Ry Cooder, and he's just gets better and better...
To pinch a phrase from this song we're listening to, "There is no god but God, and Ry Cooder is his name."
TRUE STORY.. He always seemed super proficient technically but I'm not a guitar player. His playing has gotten more musical, smoother and literally groovier. His singing is where he knocks me out, tho. As a young man he wasn't even in the same ballpark. IMNSHO.
@@moragmacgregor6792 - DEFINITELY! His singing has absolutely improved throughout the years.
George Plant At least not the biblical lol
After decades, and so many great records... this one is actually his best ever.
Absolutely F……..Brilliant I’ve always loved this guy 👍 Especially the three fantastic cords that intro the movie Southern Comfort !!!! From the very first moment I heard it- still listening to it in 2024 👍👍👍😁🤗👌🎸🎸🎸🎸🎸
American badass Ry Cooder!
So glad you rolled from the stone Ry
Why this version isn't on the CD is a debacle of a travesty of a shame.
God bless Ry Cooder, a national treasure. Long Live Ry!
An international, Galaxian treasure you mean! ;-)
@@sylvainswift3234 ..... I would say "A GIFT FROM GOD"!!!!!
Super fun, I love how much the young guys playing with him are getting in to it!
The sax through the pedal is icing on the cake
Wow I'm near speechless. The incomparable Ry makes your hair stand on end. Please come and tour the UK Mr Cooder. We love you.
We have a saying in Morocco "A snake will always spawn another one that is longer and deadlier than itself". Ry Cooder's son on the drums is just amazing.
thank you for being aware that Joakim is his kid.
Apple Don't fall from the.
CHRISTMAS 🎄
Kansas we GE TT A AMEN?. 🙏
Drummer who owned a set before Led Zeppelin hit says "A-men, brother." My very first nickname in life was "Mooka." Keep smiling!
He played how he wanted.
C'est juste exceptionnel!!! Le son est la qualité d'enregistrement, les musiciens, l'interprète, le rythme, l'enthousiasme, le talent et finalement c'est ça la musique .... 1 000 mercis!
There is no on the planet more cool than Ry !!!!
70 year old Englishman living in Thailand and this wonderful music has me bopping around in the kitchen while I make my dinner, with my wife wondering just whats going on. Terrific.
@Bjorn A'grin the only way you can like Ry Cooder music... with your soul.
Yo bro ! liverpudlian ere Surin diggin this too !!

Doing it right in the Land of Smiles. Spent 11 total there already and will return, nothing like it.
hey I just shared you on Tictok and down in Hollywood is kicking ass!!😂😂😂😂 I've been loving you for 45 yrs!😍🙏🤗
I'm enjoying Ry's music for decades. And still amazes me. being not American, that a lot of my USA friends have never heared of him!
That drummer, though! Hell yes!
Absolutely!
That's Ry's son on drums. Fantastic music all around.
@@REM1956 I know he is, thanks!
Still the world's greatest all round guitarist. And man he can really sing for an old man! I think Cooder sounds better now than ever before. I like this live version better than the album cut.
..... Sonny Landreth?
That's cuz he is not old yet.
@@Gattobuono Sonny Rocks 💓🕯
Well, George Winston is very good. Very.
So true, some folks age like fine Bourbon, it just keeps getting better ;)
calling the blues is Ry Cooder .. Fav since many years
Top 3 of mine. Cooder, svr, and buddy guy! 🤗✌️👌🏼💥🥰🙋♂️🥳
Still return to this frequently...it’s just incomparably joyous and uplifting. The individual playing is outstanding, while they also sound like one spirit.
Ry is in a state where original gifts plus decades of experience have reached transcendence.
You got it right there. and the tone is to die for. Sublime.
@@RileyBKing1 Appears to be a Strat with gold foil pickups--a combination I have never seen. I also see an old, low wattage Gibson tube amp in the backgroud. The man knows how to get the sound he wants out of tools.
@@dennisoconnor4767 Think that's right. Don't know if Ry builds frankenguitars to get the right results, some certainly do, see JJ Cale! I have an Ibanez Artist which I rejigged with 2 x P90s- these being the best pickups in my universe.
Arguably the best slide player to ever grace the guitar.
You have great taste my Brother. Old Rocker
@@russelljones182 cheers my friend
If I can go as strong as Ry Cooder as age 74, I will praise the Lord.
"Billy the Kid" still plays in my head, after Lo, these many years : ))
One day I will go back home to Cork and be a servant of the Lord,,,but not just yet!
This guy is so legitimate he isn't in the top 10, he is the top 10! When they ask YOU to play on a multi million dollar movie track along with Steve Vai, out of 1 million guitar players your the best they could find! That's a pretty good thing to have on your resume.
He is so good I remember him when I was in my 30's now I am in my 70's like he is; and he is still good.
I got to know of Ry Cooder listening to his slide guitar work with the Rolling Stones. I think it was in Sister Morphine. I never stop listening to his albums from that day on up to today...
Budda: Ry has always been on a different plane of existence. Blessed be.
Brilliant groove master, Ry Cooder. I was lucky to catch Ry Cooder in concert in 1968. My favorite guitarist, along with Jesse Ed Davis. Got to love his Coodercaster sound. God bless Ry Cooder.
My Mum introduced me to Ry Cooder whilst we were listening to Eric Clapton. Another great artist to listen to.
Came across Ry Cooder when l watched Southern Comfort way back when. This video here just blows my mind!!
What have I just listened to? Pure Awesomeness!
Blues is still alive and well ! Ry knows no boundaries .
How wow to see and hear the youngsters hanging with an old tuffie like the Cood….blessings..🇨🇦
I feel sorry for 294 people that visited this site and gave it a thumbs down. They must live very narrow, limited lives with nothing else to do. If you don't like the music, fine got some place else. Why be mean and give it a thumbs down? It great music.
Man! You Americans sure know how to rock! Keep rolling on man!!!
genuinely one of the best grooves about
good he's also getting out Christian themes nice one Ry
I am one of at least 1K guitar players who like to be Ry Cooder. Infinite variety of excellence.
I love the art of Ry Cooder. One note is all it takes to know who you are listening to.
this is not a musician. IT IS A PURE GENIUS! This song is the absolute best I have ever heard in the rhytme and blues. Absolute hammer!
Es a blues of Robert Wilkins
I’ve just been part of his travelin music show since the late eighties and it still blows me away
Ry is The Man !
This is, what Ry has been all the years. Thanks.
I play the bass like this bassplayer; with my thumb!!
Ry & Joachim, you should go way more into the studio! This is so classic they cannot pay you enough!❤.
Ain't nobody like Ry!
I saw him do a solo acoustic show in iowa City in the mid 70s. Kind of one of the reasons I continue to work at it.
I've just spent the last 5+ minutes with a smile on my face, and I guess it's the tenth time I'm watching this over the last few years :)
Me too. Just found this and I have been smiling since it started. Can't NOT smile!
From Jesus on the Mainline to Prodigal Son Ry you are the man. Thank you for all the years you've put into writing, playing and singing from an old Auckland, New Zealand 🇳🇿 groupie!

The thought keeps striking me, my father being his own kind of exceptional, how "ultimate cool" it is to have your Dad compliment your work, about which he himself knows quite a bit.
But, by all that's Beautiful, when your Pop is Ry Cooder, it's just GOTTA feel a little special, y'know?
No dislikes for the greatest!!!!!!
Impeccable. And Cooder's voice is that of a young man. (He also looks fabulous).
Most underrated blues guitar player in the world and a true Master.
I've been listening to you since I was 12 years old and you are a major part of my life soundtrack.

Such an undervalued musician/songwriter. He played in England one time, three hours straight with a towel around his neck. Great value
Greatness lie's in the hands of Rye Cooder and the band, which is phenomenal
Totally great!! There is a live album with Ry and David Lindley in Vienna, Ry's son is on drums and David's daughter on backup vocals. It's like the Bible of slide guitar, amazing.
Oh yeah, Ry is our prodigal 🎸🎼🕊🛐
Wunnerful! The man will no doubt bop till he drops.
Smooth as aged whiskey, deep as a bad woman's eyes and timeless. Peace entwined with rhythm amid the blues.
Can't beat it!
Agree with you bro.
Poetry says it best.
Ry Cooder was, is, and always shall be THE MAN!
Ry and Willie are both a National Treasure.
by the way i love ry. one nite when i was drunk i went on amazon and bought a 12 pack of his songs and played them for ever. jesus on the main line, lets have a ball. man can play slide.like nobody else.
Ry's son on drums. Accompanied Ry in the Buena Vista Social Club also. What a team. Some real magic there.
